BC Premier Week 7 Results: Pride Fall to Ravens, Lomas Dominate Bays, Caps Lose at Westshore, Burnaby Trounce CW; Women’s Premier CW Blank Lomas, Thunderbirds Outscore Westshore, Seattle Edge Abbotsford
Week 7 wrapped with Lomas finding their form at home and getting back in the win column after a four game losing streak. Ravens continue to excel as they look to defend their title. Westshore edge Caps in a close match and Burnaby dominate in road win at CW. In women’s Premier, Thunderbirds welcome return of uni players and establish their championship form, Abby keeps it close at home and CW hand Lomas their first loss.
Meraloma 48 v James Bay AA 17 @ 14:30
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: Phil Webster AR2: Elijah Lockington
Venue: Connaught Park
The Lomas are apparently back, after a series of substandard performances that saw them lose four in a row they make a strong home stand and get the +31 win. Conor O’Brien’s only other appearance this year for Lomas also coincided with their only other win, so he might be a player to watch in the weekly predictions for Lomas. Lomas move up to 7th place, the Bays remain slightly ahead in 6th. The Bays have a bye next week and the Lomas visit CW.
PREGAME
#8 Lomas hosting #6 Bays. Both teams coming off losses in their last match, Lomas losing to Caps and Bays to Ravens.
The Bays have Mike Nieuhuysen back from the Classics in Bermuda, but missing Crosby Stewart and their tighthead prop Wyatt Pilz. Returning to the roster Pete Massimo and Malik James.
The Lomas with a couple of forwards returning to the roster Conor O’Brien and Jalan Farris.
The Lomas only have one win this season, that was against last place CW. The Bays coming off 5 home games but they did well in their only road trip, defeating last year’s champions Ravens in Week 1. The Bays missing a number of national team players but have Kainoa Lloyd off the bench to make an impact. Tough one to call. Prediction: Bays by +2.
Sean’s Prediction: James Bay to win over Meraloma by 6. I think it will be tighter if Meraloma fight for the W they need but as of right now I think the visiting team will take the W. Bays by +6.

UBCOB Ravens 34 v Pacific Pride 9 @ 14:30
Referee: Kristine Lovatt AR1: Michael Landiak AR2: Mike Johnson
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
A comprehensive +25 win for the Ravens moving them up to 2nd place, tied with Westshore in Points per Match ratio. The Pride fall to 0-3 and still looking for their first win. Next week the Ravens visit Burnaby and the Pride have a bye.
PREGAME
#3 hosting #9. The Ravens coming off a win vs the Bays and the Pride coming off a loss to Westshore.
The Ravens missing Lachlan Kratz but a capable Andrew Coe takes over the #10 role. The Carson’s are back in full force with four in the roster. Jake Thiel lingering in the reserves wearing a second row number but likely will come on in the loose forwards.
The Pride are the last team to post their roster, nothing at the time of writing. We’ll post it when it’s made available but we’ll go ahead with the prediction anyway. The coach Christiaan Esterhuizen has his hands full with preparing the Canada 7s team to enter the RAN 7s tournament which takes place next weekend. The Pride were short reserve props last match and that may be a problem heading over to the Ravens who traditionally have a strong forward pack. There are a number of 7s players missing from rosters this week and the Pride may have a few of those as well. The roster is now in and Jesse Kigour, their player of the match last time out, is missing likely with the 7s team.
The Ravens lost their first two matches of the season but they’ve found their form with four straight wins. They’re at home with some top talent, the Pride coaching staff may be over extended with other duties and they may be missing some 7s players, should be a comfortable win for the home team. Prediction: Ravens by +12.
Sean’s Prediction: UBCOB Ravens to win over Pacific Pride by 10. I think UBCOB Ravens will over power the the Pride especially at home. Ravens by +10.

Westshore 22 v Capilano 17 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: John J De Goede AR2: Al Humphries
Venue: Juan De Fuca
A close +5 win for Westshore in a back and forth match. Caps were leading 14-12 at the half but Westshore won the second half. The full match video is below and kudos to Westshore for their live streaming production with commentary. Next week Westshore visit UVic and Caps have a bye. Westshore remain in a 2nd/3rd tie with Ravens on a Points per Match basis, while Caps are tied with Burnaby now in a 4th/5th battle.
PREGAME
#2 Westshore hosting #4 Capilano. Both teams coming off wins, the Caps over the Lomas and Westshore over the Pride.
Westshore missing a few backline players but picking up a few forwards. Missing this week are Thomas Isherwood, Mark Balaski and Elias Hancock. Coming into the roster are Karl Hunger and Foster Dewitt. Johnstone Olindi returns to the roster taking the fullback role and Rhys James moves to inside centre.
Capilano missing Johnny Franklin and Mike Moloney. Logan Weidner moves from #8 to blindside flanker and Teancum Tuiali comes off the bench to start at #8.
Capilano missing a couple of key backline players may hurt them more. The addition of a couple of national level forwards to the Westshore roster should help them up front. Prediction: Westshore by +7.
Sean’s Prediction: Westshore to win at home over Capilano by 3. I think this one is going to be close to call but I feel Westshore’s home advantage will drag them over the line. Westshore by +3.

Castaway Wanderers 19 v Burnaby Lake 46 @ 14:45
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: Sam Klein-Laufer
Venue: Windsor Park
A strong away performance for Burnaby, a +27 win. They move up to a tie with Capilano now for 4th/5th spot. Burnaby host the Ravens next week while CW host the Lomas.
PREGAME
The 5th place Burnaby visit the 10th place CW. CW desperate for their first win to get out of the cellar and Burnaby wanting to stay in the top 6 and playoff contention.
Burnaby with James Kelly and Clinton Odhiambo back in the roster. A couple of TWU alumni get the start Josh Halladay in second row and Fynn Murphy at inside centre. They have the Fijian flair at halfbacks and Guiseppe du Toit moves to fullback. It’s a good looking roster.
CW have Gradyn Bowd back at #10 and a couple of players returning from the Classics in Bermuda. Shane Rikley-Krindle and Angus Boyd-Porter return to the backline. It’s a stronger roster than last week.
Both teams faced the university sides before they left for the university championships taking place in Montreal. Burnaby overcame UVic and CW ran into a hot UBC side that piled on the points. Home field for CW but Burnaby with the better record. Prediction: Burnaby by +5.
Sean’s Prediction: Burnaby to win away against Castaway by 9. Burnaby have created magic this season so far and I think they have plenty of it to get a big win over Castaway. Burnaby by +9.

Westshore 20 v Vancouver Thunderbirds 38 @ 12:45
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: John J De Goede AR2: Al Humphries
Venue: Juan De Fuca
Not a big surprise as those 7 players from the university championship side added this week make a big difference to the Thunderbirds playing strength. They are two time defending champions and when the university season is over their playing strength goes up. The Thunderbirds go to 2-2 and Westshore to 3-1. Next week Westshore were scheduled to play the Ravens, it doesn’t show cancelled in the BCRU schedule yet but Ravens haven’t been able to field a team yet this season. The Thunderbirds host Abbotsford.
PREGAME
Westshore missing some key players, most notably Breanne Nicholas at #10, likely with the national 7s team. The Thunderbirds with a stronger roster, 7 players added from their UBC championship university team. Even though Westshore are 3-0 and Thunderbirds 1-2 with the roster changes it’s difficult to compare playing strength. We’ll go with the home team, but UBC are two time defending champs so it could easily be an upset. Prediction: Westshore by +3.

Abbotsford RFC 27 v Seattle Rugby 34 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Northcott AR1: Keller Reeves AR2: Santiago Posner
Venue: Exhibition Park
A competitive game, the home side weren’t able to secure their first win but picked up a losing bonus point. Abby are 0-3 and Seattle are 1-2. Next week Abby visit the Thunderbirds and Seattle travel to the Lomas.
PREGAME
Abbotsford have two losses, both to Westshore. Seattle also with two losses to Burnaby and Thunderbirds. It’s Abby’s first year in Premier with some tough lessons to learn, like last week’s 100+ road loss but they’ll improve and they did much better at home. Seattle travelling with a full squad, always a good sign, plus a consistent roster. They go in as favourites. Prediction: Seattle by +7.
