UVic Vikes Win Senior Men’s Title; Thunder Indigenous Win U18 Boys and Girls Titles
It feels like rugby season is almost here as the last 7s tournament of the summer wrapped up. The UVic Vikes won the men’s title defeating Pacific Warriors in the final. The Warriors had won all the mainland titles this year (SFU 7s, Bayside 7s) but weren’t able to add the Westshore 7s to their trophy case. Along the way UVic defeated hosts Westshore. UVic had two teams entered and it was a chance to see some of the emerging talent in their XVs program this season. In the U18 divisions it was Thunder and Thunder winning both boys and girls titles. The program had just wrapped up a week long camp at Shawnigan Lake school and it looks like the program has some emerging talent. This group will form the core of their next NZ tour. Westshore won the U16 girls title.
It was good to see some faces from the past, Dave Ramsay, the legendary JBAA second row was there with his sons as they prepare for the club youth season. It was fun reminiscing on days past including the Rugby Canada Super League and the Tide dominance in the early years of the league. Westshore 7s Tournament on Saturday Features Men’s, Women’s, U18 Boys & Girls, U16 Girls Divisions
The Westshore 7s tournament is this Saturday at the Juan de Fuca playing fields, home to Westshore RFC. The men’s tournament features Pacific Warriors who have won the Bayside and SFU tournaments already this summer. The host club Westshore will have two teams as will UVic, the Thunder Indigenous program will also enter a team. The women’s division only has CW and Westshore entered. In the youth brackets Thunder have two teams entered in both the U18 girls and U18 boys divisions. They are just completing their annual camp at Shawnigan and this tournament gives them a chance to showcase what they’ve learned. CW and Westshore complete the boys U18 division. In the girls U18 division Burnaby, Port Alberni and Westshore also have teams entered. The U16 girls tournament includes Burnaby, Port Alberni and Westshore.
