BC High School Rugby Championships Start Next Wednesday: We Look at School Numbers and Regional Allocations

The BC High School Rugby Championships take place in a week’s time in Abbotsford for both boys and girls in both XVs and 7s. The XVs tournament takes place from Wednesday May 29th to Saturday June 1st, the 7s tournament takes place Thursday May 30th and Friday May 31st. The links to the schedule and the berthing document are listed below.

The BCSS berthing document gives some interesting numbers about rugby in high schools in BC. There are 70 schools registered for Girls 7s and 66 for Boys 7s. Compare that to XVs where 64 schools are registered for Boys XVs and 32 for Girls XVs. You could analyze those numbers in various ways, girls rugby is growing and 7s seems to be the main vehicle for that. There’s still a 2 to 1 ratio boys/girls in XVs. In BC School Sports, school teams can register for XVs or 7s but not both, that adds up to 126 schools with boys rugby programs and 102 with girls rugby programs.

It’s also interesting to break those numbers down by region, the BCSS has 9 regions, if we were to categorize them by senior club terminology there would Valley which would include Eastern Valley (Abbotsford area), South Fraser (Surrey area), Fraser North (Burnaby area), Island and Mainland (Vancouver Sea to Sky). There’s also Thompson-Okanagan, Northwest, North Central and Kootenays.

If we look at Boys XVs the Valley accounts for 33 of the 64 teams registered, Vancouver 16, Island 8, Okanagan 5, Kootenay 1, North Central 1, Northwest 0. If we look at Girls XVs the Valley accounts for 19 of the 32 teams registered, Island 6, Vancouver 3, Okanagan 3, Kootenay 1.

The berthing process is assigning regional spots at the provincial championships based on rankings. In Boys XVs there are 32 spots at the Provincials, so 32 of 64 teams will make the Provincials in either AAA or AA and either Tier 1 or Tier 2. The Valley gets 16 spots, Vancouver 7, Island 6, Okanagan 2 and North Central 1. In Girls XVs there are 16 spots at the Provincials, so 16 of 32 teams will make the Provincials in either AAA or AA, there is only one tier. The Valley gets 7 spots, Island 5, Vancouver 2, Kootenay 1, Okanagan 1.

Sevens isn’t tiered so in Boys only 16 of 66 teams make the Provincials and in Girls 16 of 70 teams make the Provincials. In Boys 7s the Island has the most teams registered with 18, Okanagan 16, Valley 13, North Central 7, Vancouver 6, Kootenay 4, Northwest 2. The berths assigned are Island 4, Okanagan 4, Valley 4, and 1 to Vancouver, North Central, Northwest and Kootenay. In Girls 7s both the Valley and Island have 19 teams registered, Okanagan 13, North Central 9, Northwest 4, Vancouver 3, Kootenay 3. The berths assigned are Island 4, Okanagan 4, Valley 4, and 1 to Vancouver, North Central, Northwest and Kootenay.
