ISLAND BLUES

Island Blues head coach Albert Michau has named a changed squad for Game 2, featuring Rugby Canada athletes Olivia Apps and Fancy Bermudez.

Castaway Wanderers RFC’s Julia Schell said ahead of the match: “It’s a really exciting time for women’s Rugby in Canada. It’s a big summer not only for the [Canadian] Senior Women’s team, but also for Age-Grade players as those programs are starting to make a comeback post-pandemic. The provincial programs feed directly into the national team and the BC Gold vs. Blue games coming up are a real testament to the calibre of women’s Rugby country-wide. We have a great group here on the island who have picked up on a new system really fast and are super eager to learn. Backing us we have an all-star coaching squad made up of local Club and University Coaches and national team alumni, and we’re all keen to get out there Saturday and show what we’ve been working on!”

Cowichan RFC’s Tyson Beukeboom added: “Our [Vancouver] Island group this year is awesome. We have a ton of depth across all positions, which is a testament to all the hard work our Coaches and staff have put in this year and over the years to build Rugby on Vancouver Island. Everyone is here to work hard and improve and I think we do an amazing job of showing that in our play. We just had a big win against the Mainland and I’m really excited to see how we develop as a team leading into our second match.”
