BC Rugby Weekend of April 25th 2026

BC Premier Quarter-Finals Rosters & Predictions: Capilano @ JBAA, UVic @ Westshore – Women’s Premier CW @ Westshore

It’s quarter-finals time in BC. In the men’s Premier the top two teams get a bye and host the semi-finals so teams #3 to #6 battle it out in the quarters. The winner of Bays v Caps go to the Ravens and the winner of Westshore v UVic go to UBC next week. In women’s Premier the top 3 teams get a bye and #4 and #5 battle it out for a semi-final spot. The winner of Westshore v CW go to Meraloma next week and Burnaby v Thunderbirds is already set as the other semi.

Men’s Premier

James Bay AA v Capilano @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Martin Thornton AR2: Toby Mustill
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park

#4 hosting #5. The Bays crushed Capilano 64-24 in March at Klahanie.

It’s a similar Caps roster to the one that lost to the Bays last month. The big addition is the return of Johnny Franklin in the centres. The Caps had some key players come and go throughout the season like Sam Reimer, Payton Teneycke, Logan Weidner, Mike Moloney, Izzak Kelly none are available for this quarter-final.

The Bays missing the three Pacific Pride players they picked up near the end of the season, they wouldn’t be eligible for the playoffs. That requires some shuffling of the bench and Carter Haddow gets the start at #8 with Alex Jordan moving to the second row. Otherwise it’s a similar starting lineup to their last match where they upset UBC with a strong defensive effort.

Based on rosters, the previous result in March, their latest match results, and home field advantage, the Bays have to go in as favourites. Prediction: Bays by +7.

Westshore v University Of Victoria @ 14:30
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: Sam Klein-Laufer AR2: David Hale
Venue: Juan De Fuca

#3 hosting #6. UVic won the last matchup in January 40-19 with Cooper Coats playing an influential role.

Westshore were missing a number of players in that January match including Emerson Prior, Joe Kingham, Brian Ndirangu, Thomas Heuser, Elias Hancock, Kyle Tremblay, Rhys James, Alvin Otieno. They did have Foster Dewitt (now in Uruguay), Avery Oitomen, Taylor McGuire (injured). It’s a lot stronger roster this weekend compared to January. There is a big omission however, Mark Balaski, a #10 who is national team calibre was injured in the Capilano match and is not available this weekend.

UVic have a similar roster to the one in January with the addition of Canada 7s players Adam Doane, David Richard and Morgan di Nardo. They are missing Josh McIndoe. Overall a stronger roster in particular on the outside with Richard and di Nardo.

UVic fell to Ravens last weekend but without Coats or di Nardo, also Westshore don’t have the physical forward pack that the Ravens possess, they’re more matched in style with UVic playing an expansive game with threats out wide. Missing Balaski could be the difference. It will be closer that the 40-19 game but UVic look to be favourites. Prediction: UVic by +3.

Women’s Premier

Westshore v Castaway Wanderers @ 12:45
Referee: Justine Blatt-Janmaat AR1: David Hale AR2: Sam Klein-Laufer
Venue: Juan De Fuca

#4 hosting #5. Both teams lost to the Thunderbirds in their last match, Westshore by 62-10 and CW by 24-7.

Westshore missing several national team players both 7s and XVs. They have several players returning who weren’t in that -52 loss to Thunderbirds, Celia Probe, Kendra Cousineau, Maya Addai and Cypress Des Ormeaux Schmidt. They only list 21 players in the roster however, never a good sign.

CW with only one new player in the starting XV from the squad that lost -17 to the Thunderbirds. That’s Savannah King who comes into the lineup on the wing. Chanelle Edwards-Challenger is moved from the bench to start at second row.

This is a 50/50 match. Westshore have only played one game in March/April and that was the loss to Thunderbirds. These teams met in February, it was a +7  win for Westshore. Westshore missing their two starting props from that match including national team tighthead Sierra Gillis. The fact they only have 21 players listed, no roster posted on social media at the time of writing, that’s a tipping point. Prediction: CW by +1.
