It’s Week 12 of the BC Premier with 5 matches in Men’s Premier and 4 in Women’s Premier. The top 3 teams Westshore, Ravens, UBC could see some movement with UBC facing Ravens and Westshore hosting the Vikes. The Bays and the Vikes are in a battle for the 6th and final playoff spot, the Bays host the Caps. In Women’s Premier the top 4 teams are all in action and only separated by 4 points in the standings.
Burnaby Lake v Castaway Wanderers @ 14:30
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: Saro Turner AR2: Jack Webster
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
#5 hosting #8. Both teams coming off losses, CW at home to Ravens, Burnaby on the road to Westshore.
CW missing Mason Pedersen, Fred Regan comes off the bench and Gavin Kratz moves to tighthead. The backline is shifted around a bit with Zech Pilgrim and Andrew Easson the halfback pair this week. John Braddock returns to take a spot on the bench as reserve hooker. We haven’t seen his name in the CW roster since October 2023.
Burnaby still missing a couple of backline Fijian players who went to the Coral Coast 7s earlier this month. Also the 7s players seem to be missing this week from all teams, so Ethan Turner not in the roster. Wayne Ngubane gets moved from scrum-half to flyhalf in the absence of Napolioni Bolaca and Ethan Turner. James Kelly moves from hooker to blindside flanker. Luke Toroca and Kimi Vunituraga return to make an impact from the bench.
Both teams missing key players but just based on current standings and home field advantage we’ll give Burnaby the nod. Prediction: Burnaby by +5.

Meraloma v Pacific Pride @ 14:30
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Thomas Cooper AR2: Justyn Roberts
Venue: Connaught Park
#9 hosting #10. Both teams coming off a loss, the Lomas to the Vikes and the Pride to Capilano.
The Pride rotate their second row from the reserves and bring in Theo Espagnol as starting hooker with the rest of the forward pack remaining the same. The national 7s team holding back players this week, likely a selection camp, as they prepare for the SVNS 2 tournament in Nairobi on Feb 14-15 – that might explain the absence of Jacob Ince and Thomas Cuzange in the backline. The halfback pairing remains the same, Chris Rose and Jean-Louis Desgouttes, with Jamin Hodgkins getting the start at fullback.
The Lomas make minimal changes, Conor O’Brien moves back to his usual second row spot with Marcus Ale coming off the reserves to start at #8. Malachi Te Rore – King comes into the roster as starting outside centre.
The Pride have given up almost an average of 50 points per game in their last 3 matches, can they keep that number down this week? This is their best shot of a win so far this season playing the 9th place team. Key veterans like Conor O’Brien may be the difference for the Lomas and the insertion of NZer Malachi Te Rore – King in the backline may add some scoring spark. Prediction: Lomas by +3.

UBC RFC v UBCOB Ravens @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Lance Davison AR2: Chad Falk
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre
A battle of teams tied for 2nd in the league and last year’s finalists. Both teams coming off wins last week, the Ravens over CW and UBC over the Bays.
The Ravens have Frank Carson and Hillyard Carson back in the roster. David O’Donaghue at openside is missing and replaced by Jake Ikeda. Only one change in the backline with Hamish Janes replacing Ethan Berry at inside centre.
Minimal changes for UBC, rotating some of the front row and loose forwards from the reserves. The only new player in the starting XV is Lenny Bonduau on the wing.
It will be interesting to see who wins this match it could be a preview of the final, last year the Ravens won 33-24 over UBC in the final. UBC really the only team who haven’t been defeated on the field this season, their only loss was a default. Prediction: UBC by +4.

Westshore v University Of Victoria @ 14:30
Referee: Bradley Schwalger AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: Sam Klein-Laufer
Venue: Juan De Fuca
#1 hosting #6. This might be the candidate for potential upset of the week. Westshore missing 5 starters from last week and UVic again starting the national team #10 Cooper Coats.
Westshore missing a couple of key forwards #8 Joe Kingham and #7 Brian Ndirangu, they bring in veteran Admir Admir Cejvanovic to cover the #8 spot and make some rotations. In the backs they’re missing Thomas Isherwood, Rhys James and Mark Balaski, likely all at the 7s camp.
UVic keep their backline intact from their win last week against Meraloma. Again Cooper Coats features at #10. There’s one change on the wing with Thoron Koyote getting the start. UVic also missing a couple of starting forwards Adam Doane and Ryder Heaney-Corns. They have Michael Oughtred back in the roster, he was the starting #10 at the beginning of the season.
A tough one to call with all the missing players, Westshore hit the hardest with Isherwood, Balaski, James the core of the backline. We’ll see how they cope with the players missing. Still they are sitting at #1 so have to go in as slight favourites. Prediction: Westshore by +3.

James Bay AA v Capilano @ 14:45
Referee: Justine Blatt-Janmaat AR1: David Hale AR2: Derek Horton
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park
#7 hosting #4. A key battle for both teams, the Bays just sitting outside a playoff spot and needing the win.
The Caps missing a few players, Logan Weidner, Johnny Franklin and Mike Moloney hasn’t returned from injury. Sam Reimer moves from scrum-half to flyhalf with Wade Jansen not in the match 23. Ben Welsh replaces Johnny Franklin in the centres.
The Bays missing Kyle Steeves but Callum Botchar remains in the second row. Noah Flesch and James Thiel also missing this week, Isaac Gonevou takes the #10 role and Ty Driscoll moves to fullback.
The Caps keep surprising as they put 50+ on the Pride last week and the Bays only narrowly lost to UBC last week. Again with key player changes it’s difficult to predict playing strength. The Bays at home always tough but Caps have been getting it done ever week with their only losses to the top 3 teams. Prediction: Caps by +2.

The Thunderbirds are two time defending champions, they sit middle of the pack at 3-3 but have a deep reservoir of players that they rotate and can put out a winning roster on any weekend.
