BC Premier Week 8 Predictions & Rosters: Rowers @ Westshore, CW @ UBC, UVic @ Ravens, Burnaby @ JBAA
It’s Week 8 of the BC Premier and it looks like some national team 7s activity happening as rosters are devoid of national team hopefuls this week plus the XVs team are in Europe. The important SVNS 3 tournament for Canada 7s is in 3 weeks in Dubai. Three teams have byes this week Meraloma, Bayside and Capilano. The Capilano U23 are hosting Edmonton Gold in an exhibition game at Klahanie Sunday at 2.30. A key match is Ravens v UVic, a replay of last year’s final. JBAA try to defend their unbeaten record minus seven starters. Rowers look for their first win on the Island vs Westshore. UBC continue to build towards the university nationals as they host CW.
Westshore v Vancouver Rowing Club @ Juan de Fuca @ 2:30
Ref: Cole Pedrick AR: Andrew Owen
#4 hosting #11. Westshore coming off a loss to UVic, Rowers coming off a loss to Meraloma.
Westshore with a similar roster to last week with some shuffling around. Joe Kingham is back and takes the #8 spot. A few starters moved to the bench, Rhys James takes over from Jean-Louis Desgouttes at #10, Desgouttes goes to the reserves. William Mwanji moves to the reserves and Toby Higgins starts second row. Denis Abukuse moves to the reserves and scrum half Natsu Yokoyama takes the wing. Grayson Perry, the significant other of Taylor Perry Canadian women’s star, starts at #9.
The Rowers with a consistent roster, according to the PlayHQ listing. There are a few tbd but the starting XV looks the same as last week. Sawyer Herron returns to the match 23 in the reserves. In Peter MacDonald’s write up vs the Ravens he gave kudos to the Rowers front row and scrum, that will be an interesting match up to watch.
Westshore missing some of their big guns like Jesse Kilgour, Matt Oworu, Kyle Tremblay who are with the national team but this is similar to the team that defeated CW and CW defeated Rowers so Westshore go in as favourites at home. Prediction: Westshore by +7.

JBAA v Burnaby Lake @ MacDonald Park @ 2:30
Ref: Justyn Roberts AR: Malcolm Klaver, Alan Humphries
#5 hosting #8. Even though the Bays at #5 on total points they are undefeated at 4-0 and lead in points per match. Burnaby coming off a close loss to an under strength UBC team last week.
Burnaby with a consistent starting XV with just a couple of rotations from the bench in the loose forwards. They’re keeping a couple of key players in the reserves perhaps looking for a second half push.
The Bays missing a lot of national level players in this match, some in Europe with the XVs and some of the 7s hopefuls may be called up in preparation for that all important SVNS 3 tournament in Dubai later this month. Missing are Austin Creighton, Tyler Matchem, Michael Nieuwenhuysen, Kainoa Lloyd, Josh Thiel, D’Shawn Bowen, Noah Flesch. An interesting side note is Cass Robertson, son of former All Black coach Scott Robertson, gets his potential BC Premier debut in the reserves. He’s been playing Div 1 for the Bays to start the season.
The Bays missing seven starters that helped them on this undefeated run this season, this will be a test of their depth. Burnaby have potential but they haven’t been winning the close games, they are at 1-5 with only one win but their point differential is only -32 and they have 5 bonus points. It should be a close one, moderate chance of an upset but I’m going with the home team that’s undefeated. Prediction: Bays by +3.

#6 hosting #10. UBC defeated Burnaby last week, CW fell to Capilano.
UBC are focusing on the university nationals coming up this month, resting key players like Cody Nhanala, Liam Kinghorn, James Biss plus a couple of players are in Europe with the national team Stephen Webb and Liam James. This looks like a step up from last week with more of the first string starting, the front row, Alastair Marshall, Liam Turnbull, Max McGavern, Joe McNulty.
CW with a consistent roster with some rotation from the bench and still a few tbd in the PlayHQ listing. Missing are Ethan Hager and Liam Poulton, both would be considered national 7s hopefuls, another indication there’s possibly a 7s camp or trial this weekend with the Dubai 7s three weeks away.
UBC at home, CW only 1 win this season. UBC go in as favourites. Prediction: UBC by +10.

Ravens v UVIC @ Jericho Rugby Park @ 2:30
Ref: Shanda Assmus AR: Scott Johnson
#1 hosting #7. Ravens coming off a win over Bayside and UVic defeating Westshore last week.
UVic missing Morgan di Nardo, Josh McIndoe, Lockhart MacGregor, Spencer Cotie and Brendan Kim but they have Robert Reid back and most importantly they retain Cooper Coats at #10.
The Ravens missing all the Carsons plus their 7s players Lockie Kratz and Josiah Morra. There’s still some tbd on their roster in the PlayHQ system. Interesting they have Hamish Janes listed at #6 and he played outside centre last week. UPDATE: Ravens roster gaps filled in.
Both teams missing key players, this will be an interesting matchup, it’s a replay of last year’s final, won by the Ravens. You would have to go with the top ranked team at home but UVic with Cooper Coats running the show have the X factor. Rate this a moderate chance of an upset. Prediction: Ravens by +2.

Women’s Premier
There’s only one real game this weekend, CW @ Thunderbirds. The Seattle games are exhibition although the PlayHQ system automatically adds them to the standings, hopefully BCRU will make an adjustment sometime during the season. The Westshore @ Ravens game is cancelled, Ravens apparently only had 8 players, whether that’s going to be marked as a default win for Westshore or played at a later date, who knows, the BCRU don’t seem to put much effort in oversight of the league.
Thunderbirds v CW @ Gerald McGavin Centre @ 12:45
At least both teams put their rosters in PlayHQ, that’s a plus. It also provides a historic record to compare later rosters, especially for the Thunderbirds where many of these players won’t show up later in the season after the UBC team wrap up their season. UBC and UVic won their semi-finals today and will meet in the national university championship finals on Sunday.

7s camp in Langford this week confirmed. Poulton injured knee
it’s disappointing even with playing unregistered girls and putting people at risk the ravens still can’t field a womens team. Making a mockery of the premier competition.
