BC Premier Week 5 Results: UBC Pummel Sharks, Lomas Defeat CW, Ravens Grounded by Westshore, Burnaby Fall to Caps – UVic @ JBAA Postponed
Week 5 wraps up with one big upset and other results falling into the “as expected” column. Next week a couple of big matches, the UVic v UBC national university qualifier and the undefeated Bays test themselves at a resurgent Lomas. Also CW host Westshore and Ravens host Rowers.
It’s time to wrap up the turkey and get back to action. There are four games on tap, the JBAA v UVic match has been postponed until December 4th, we’ll see if the “super” El Niño brings warmer-than-average winter temperatures to BC as promised. The Rowers have a bye week.
Westshore 52 v Ravens 33 @ Juan de Fuca @ 2:30
Ref Cole Pedrick, AR Madeline Berry
A huge upset as the previously undefeated, high flying Ravens got grounded on their trip to the Island. Westshore came out of the gates fast and were up 38-14 at half time. The Ravens were stunned. Westshore were running the ball from everywhere, Kyle Tremblay, Jesse Kilgour, Rhys James seemed to pop up everywhere. The scrum anchored by props Emerson Prior and Kane Perrett had the upper hand today. Having Matt Oworu chopping down runners and poaching breakdown ball added to the Ravens’ woes. A bonus point win for Westshore a bonus point in the loss for Ravens. Next week Westshore visit CW and the Ravens host the Rowers. We’ll have match photos up on our FB page this weekend.
PREGAME
The game of the week with the undefeated 3-0 Ravens visiting the 2-1 Westshore. This will be the last Premier match for Matt Oworu before he heads to France to play Pro D2 with Biarritz.
The Ravens have an unchanged tight five with double Carsons in the second row. Hillyard Carson makes his first appearance this season in the reserves. It’s the return of Brian Ndirangu to Westshore, a team he played a couple of seasons with when he arrived from Kenya. Joe Locke is back at #8. Josiah Morra and Andrew Coe are missing so some switching around in the backs, Takoda McMullin moves to fullback with Hamish Janes and Niko Andrianos coming off the bench to start.
Westshore have a few national team players, Oworu as mentioned, also Jesse Kilgour at scrum half, Emerson Prior at loosehead prop, Kyle Tremblay at centre, Rhys James at fullback.
Expecting a competitive match with all the talent on both sides. The Ravens perhaps have the edge in the tight five but both backlines have firepower and Jesse Kilgour may be the wild card. Still can’t bet against the defending champions who are undefeated this season. Prediction: Ravens by +3.

Bayside Sharks 7 v UBC 50 @ South Surrey Athletic Park @ 02:30
Ref Nathaniel Hight, AR Colin Brown, Phil Webster
UBC flexed a bit as expected and put up the numbers, a +43 win. Next week it’s the big UBC v UVic match that will determine who will be going to the university nationals in November. UBC have a +10 lead in that head to head series, UVic will host the game next weekend. Bayside have a bye.
PREGAME
Bayside were pummelled in their last match at home, a -77 loss to Westshore. UBC are 2-1 but haven’t really unleashed their attack so far this season.

UBC have only one change in the forwards from their last Premier match in September, Graeme Francolini starts at loosehead prop. Caleb Seumanutafa gets the start at #10 ahead of James Biss in this match. It’s their fully loaded squad with three national team players, Cody Nhanala, Liam James and Stephen Webb.
It has to be UBC all the way in this match, UBC might finally get their attack on track and put up some points. Prediction: UBC by +12.

Ref Chris Assmus, AR Malcolm Klaver, Cole Northcott
A comfortable +14 win for Capilano puts them top of the table in total points. Burnaby remain in 7th place. Next week both Caps and Burnaby have byes.
PREGAME
Capilano at 3-1 suffered their first loss in their last match against JBAA on the road. Burnaby at 1-3 were upset by Meraloma in their last match, allowing 50 points on defence.
Burnaby have Taitusi Vikilani back at #8 and Ethan Turner is starting at #12. Napolioni Bolaca moves from starting #10 to the reserves, Iowanne Raturaciri moves from the reserves to starting fullback.
Capilano have Tom Morris back at #10, he impressed in their round 2 win over Westshore. Veteran Chris Robinson gets the start at scrum half. Other than that it’s a stable roster with Hamish MacDonald coming off the bench to start at blindside flanker. Tyler Wong is back in the match 23 in the reserves.
Caps only loss this season was to a loaded JBAA team on the road, they’re at home and go in as favourites. Prediction: Caps by +7.

Castaway Wanderers 12 v Meraloma 50 @ Windsor Park @ 2:30
Ref Julianne Zussman, AR Thomas Cooper, Anthony Forth
It’s the second week in a row that Lomas have put up 50 points exactly on their opponents, check the record books for that stat. After starting the season with two losses, they’re looking like a playoff threat now. They sit tied with Ravens in second place based on total points. CW sit in 10th place just above Rowers. Next week CW host Westshore and the Lomas host the undefeated, 3-0, Bays.
PREGAME
CW are 1-2, their win coming in Week 1 against the Rowers. The Lomas, 2-2, coming off a big upset over Burnaby in their last match.
CW have a stable roster, a couple of tbd at the time of writing at scrum half and wing. The only other change to the starting XV is Hugh Mager getting the start at blindside flanker.
The Lomas don’t have their roster published at the time of writing, we’ll update later. The Lomas have posted their roster, Mitchell Stokes on the wing the only new player in the starting XV. Conor O’Brien is back in the match 23 in the reserves, the veteran was a key player for the Lomas in past seasons, it’s his first appearance this season.
The Lomas surprised last match putting up 50 points on Burnaby, it’s their first trip to the Island however, so travelling form is unknown. CW’s only win was against the 0-4 Rowers who are just coming up from Div 1. It should be a close match. Give the slight edge to the Lomas based on their last performance. Prediction: Lomas by +2.

Westshore 85 v Ravens 24 @ Juan de Fuca @ 12:45
Ref Juan Rey, AR Kenneth Yee, Olivia Ross
This may have been a default anyway but Westshore ended up running in a lot of tries. Westshore have some flyers out wide, #15, #21 and #10 were especially impressive. The PlayHQ system notes it as a 25-0 score, so a default officially. Next week Westshore visits CW and the Ravens host the Thunderbirds. Mark Why in the World would the BCRU allow the JBAA / UVic game be postponed ?
Any ideas ? Did you wonder ? Are there any answers out there ?
Wedding, Funeral, Birthday , UVic Election Dance ?
One Man’s Opinion: This hurts the value of the Top Domestic League in Canada .
HH Jono
No idea Jono, both clubs had to agree or else it wouldn’t have gone ahead. Not sure who initiated or why. It’s now scheduled for Friday evening (Dec 4th) at Centennial Stadium, JBAA to host return match in the spring.
Maybe UVic is marshalling itself in preparation for UBC next week?
You’re not wrong, Don .
Why would the BCRU allow
teams to do that ?
HH Jono
I mean why did they let James bay punt their first div team for months on end a few years ago? I guess we will never know!!!!!
UBC not fully loaded yet with 6 players in Chile playing for Canada under 20.
So when Bayside plays Westshore, which team does Kyle Tremblay decide to suit up for? Conflict of interest, no?
What’s the update on the Lomas you said “The Lomas don’t have their roster published at the time of writing, we’ll update later”
I’ve been following their number 10 and am interested to know how he’s looking for the upcoming game this weekend.
The roster is updated now, #10 Anzac Tipene has started all 5 Meraloma matches at #10 I believe.
