BC Rugby Weekend of October 18th 2025

BC Premier Week 4 Results: Bays Drop CW, Ravens Soar Past Lomas, UBC Demolish Westshore, Caps Top Burnaby – University Qualifier UVic Edge TWU – Week 2 Women’s Premier Westshore Defeat Abby, UBC Outlast Seattle

Some surprising scorelines on a cold, rainy weekend on the west coast. UBC look to be the on form team and sit top of the standings, the Ravens have started to find their form with some key player additions, Bays playing solid rugby and the Caps with the upset of the weekend.

It’s Week 4 of the men’s BC Premier and Week 2 of the women’s Premier. UBC sit top of the standings with a 3-1 record, they’ve played one more game than the rest of the league as they fit their home and away games against the Vikes in early as part of the University Qualification series. Westshore are the only team at 3-0 and those two teams meet to determine top spot. Burnaby are close behind with a 2-1-0 record having tied UBC in their first match.

James Bay AA 29 v Castaway Wanderers 12 @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: David Hale AR2: Dan Cvitanovich
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park

The Bays come through as predicted for the win but a +17 differential was higher than expected. The Bays have put together some solid results and look to be contenders this season despite finishing last in the 2024-25 season. The Bays host the Lomas next week while CW host Capilano.

PREGAME

CW sit in 9th place with an 0-2 record, the Bays are at 1-2 and sit in 5th place.

CW have Gradyn Bowd back, the veteran #10 usually has an impact on the match. Ethan Hager returns as well at fullback. The loose forwards are shuffled around with John Humphries making a return to the starting lineup at #6.

The Bays have been busy getting some quality players back Callum Botchar starts in the second row, James Thiel has moved over from the Pride to start at outside centre. Kyle Steeves has returned to the roster as reserve tighthead prop. The Bays have now had all Thiel’s playing for them at one point in time.

It’s a tough one to call I think the Bays with Sam Miller, Neil Trainor and Kyle Steeves will have an advantage up front and then add Callum Botchar to the tight five. CW have a strong backline with Gradyn Bowd and Ethan Hager bolstering the existing talent. CW have had an extra week off,  will that be a factor? Flip of a coin and go with home field advantage and the front row. Prediction: Bays by +2.

Sean’s Prediction: JBAA to win narrowly by 3 points, it will be a tight game but I feel JBAA will have the edge especially at home. Bays by +3.

UBCOB Ravens 52 v Meraloma 19 @ 14:30
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Riley Robinson AR2: Darryl Lucas
Venue: Jericho Beach Park

A +33 win according to the BCRU results page. It looks like Lachlan Kratz’ debut at #10 went well. The Ravens host UVic next weekend and the Lomas visit the Bays.

PREGAME

Both teams with a 1-2 record, the Ravens with extra bonus points sit in 4th place, the Lomas in 8th.

The Lomas have a new prop, Joyner Gaualofa, who got a debut appearance with the Wellington Lions in 2023. The rest of the roster looks similar to last week with some shuffling from the reserves.

The Ravens have added Lachlan Kratz to the roster and he gets the start #10, moving Andrew Coe to fullback. With Lucas Rumball at #7 and a few more Carson’s back in the roster, it’s looking like the Ravens will be stepping up their game.

Another tough one to predict, some new players on both teams. How will Lachlan Kratz perform at #10 after returning from injury and an extended time off? Andrew Coe, Lucas Rumball, Jack Carson all impact players. Giving the edge to the home team again. Prediction: Ravens by +5.

Sean’s Prediction: Going back with the Ravens after predicting wrong in the first 3 games. I have my toes and fingers crossed. Ravens by +5.

UBC 45 v Westshore 0 @ 14:30
Referee: Benjamin Lambrick AR1: Trevor Honey AR2: JT ZHANG
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre

A surprising result considering all the talent Westshore have in the backline, not a single point. A great defensive effort by UBC. UBC were favoured to win but a +45 win while shutting out a team that has a number of Canadian national team players (XVs/7s) and former Kenyan national 7s players is a shocker but impressive from UBC. Westshore have a bye next week and UBC host Burnaby.

PREGAME

The top two teams in the standings, UBC 3-1 and Westshore 3-0.

Westshore missing Thomas Isherwood and Kyle Tremblay this week but have Elias Hancock back at #8. Mark Balaski moves to #12 and Taylor McGuire moves to #10. A blast from the past, Admir Cejvanovic, is in the reserves.

UBC with their first string lineup, no resting players before the University Nationals. Only 3 rotations from the starting XV that defeated UVic, at hooker, wing and fullback, plus they have Takoda McMullin back in the reserves.

This will be a great battle, the BC Premier is looking stronger than ever with a lot of national team players filtering in. Westshore missing a couple of key players in Isherwood and Tremblay might be key. Again going with the home team Prediction: UBC by +4.

Sean’s Prediction: Thunderbirds by +3.

Capilano 35 v Burnaby Lake 10 @ 15:00
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Sam Klein-Laufer AR2: Pierre Iachetti
Venue: Klahanie Park

Another surprising result, a couple of teams struggled to put points on the board in the cold, rainy conditions today. It definitely was a day for the grinders and forwards, not so much for those who rely on expansive backline play.  Caps visit CW next week while Burnaby will visit UBC.

PREGAME

Capilano sitting in 6th place at 1-2, Burnaby in 3rd place with a 2-1-0 record, still undefeated.

Burnaby have a stable forward pack anchored around tighthead Bryce Worden. James Kelly returns as starting hooker and  Leo Chen comes into the second row. They have a dynamic backline orchestrated by #10 Ethan Turner and featuring Fijian flair. Reid Watkins is also back as reserve scrum half. They also have a new reserve tighthead prop from Australia/Samoa, there’s a brief write-up below from the sports management company that represents him.

Caps are missing big Izzak Kelly in the second row this week which causes some shuffling of positions and movement from the bench. Ben Taylor comes into the roster to start on the wing.

Burnaby are undefeated, they have a strong lineup this week. Caps are at home, they’re hosting their annual Rugby for the Cure fundraiser (see below). Missing Izzak Kelly won’t help, going with the visiting team on this one. Prediction: Burnaby by +7.

Sean’s Prediction: Lake by 7, they’ve been so good to watch and I hope they push forward and get another W. Burnaby by +7.

Week 3 Standings

University Qualifier

University Of Victoria 24 v Trinity Western University 19 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: Juan Pablo Rey AR2: Kenneth Yee
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field

UVic held on for a narrow +5 against TWU to secure their trip to the nationals as BC #2. UVic were up 17-0 at half time, then 24-0 early in the second half before TWU stormed back with 19 points to make the game close. UVic visit the Ravens next week in the BC Premier.

PREGAME

The university qualifying for BC #2 comes down to this match, the Vikes are 1-2 and TWU are 0-3, if TWU manages to win then they’ll be tied but UVic have a massive +38 in the head to head point differential.

The Vikes don’t have Cooper Coats or Morgan di Nardo in the roster, that can make a difference. They do have Josh McIndoe back however.

We haven’t seen the TWU roster yet but will publish when it’s available. Updated with roster.

Thinking UVic will seal the deal on their BC #2 spot for the Nationals.

Women’s Premier

The women’s Premier goes into Week 2, we’ll add the rosters when they’re available.

Abbotsford RFC 24 v Westshore 44 @ 12:45
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: John Hight AR2: Elijah Lockington
Venue: Exhibition Park

Westshore getting the job done with a +20 win over Premier debutants Abbotsford. Westshore host CW next weekend and Abbotsford are supposed to visit the Ravens however the Ravens have cancelled their first two games, unable to get the numbers yet.

PREGAME

The first game of the season for both teams. Abbotsford making its move up to Premier so it will be interesting to see what they bring, hopefully they’ll start including first names in their rosters so we get to know the players. Westshore with some familiar names, the big name is at #10, national team player Breanne Nicholas. Westshore travelling with a short roster, only 20 players, so that may have an impact in the last 20 minutes. Westshore typically gets stronger in the spring as more high level players return. Still going with the veteran Premier squad on this. Prediction: Westshore by +8.

Vancouver Thunderbirds 19 v Seattle 15 @ 12:45
Referee: Phil Webster AR1: Trevor Honey AR2: JT ZHANG
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre

A narrow +4 win for the Thunderbirds, they’ll host Burnaby next week. Seattle have a bye.

PREGAME

UBC or as they prefer to be known Vancouver Thunderbirds, are the UBC players that didn’t make the national university squad, still good players and they defeated Abbotsford in a preseason match 33-21 on October 4th. It will be interesting to see how they match up against a Seattle team that lost to Burnaby 36-10 in Week 1.

Seattle only have one new player in the starting XV that’s Kendra Young at openside.

Thunderbirds haven’t published their roster yet but we have the roster from October 4th in their preseason match against Abby.

UBC haven’t lost many games, even if it’s the second squad, Seattle were beaten emphatically by Burnaby. Giving the nod to the home team. Prediction: Thunderbirds by +7.

  1. Really not a surprising result if you watch how westshore play. UBC are well coached, Westshore rely on good players and do not have a game plan. League is UBC’s to be lost this year
