BC Premier Week 3 Results: Ravens Second-Half Comeback Over UBC,  UVic Fall to Burnaby, CW Demolished by James Bay, Capilano Top Bayside, Meraloma Sink Rowers

It was an amazing second-half comeback by Ravens over UBC to remain undefeated. The Bays flexed in a dominant win over CW, Burnaby claimed the home win as did Capilano, Meraloma get their first win of the season on the road at Brockton Oval.

It’s Week 3 and a number of national team players have returned to the rosters after the win over USA in the Pacific Nations Cup. Back from national team duty are Lucas Rumball, Takoda McMullin, Stephen Webb, Cody Nhanala, Liam James, Callum Botchar, Josh McIndoe, Austin Creighton. It’s UBC vs Ravens in a top match, a replay of the 2025 final, check for the live stream on game day. Can Capilano maintain their perfect record with a third BP win. The Bays with a strong roster host crosstown rivals CW. Burnaby host UVic and Rowers and Lomas look for their first win.

UBC 25 v Ravens 40 @ Gerald McGavin Centre @ 2:30

A game of two halves, UBC up 25-0 at the half, the Ravens score 40 unanswered points. Only the second half of the live stream worked so only the Ravens tries are recorded unfortunately. Their first of the comeback was a 5m lineout and maul, second was Joe Locke isolated against the winger from a few metres out. With 20 minutes left Max McGavern gets his second yellow and is out with a red, a turning point. Then a contentious try, a chip kick off a penalty from Jamin Hodgkins to Josiah Morra in the goal area, the announcer is adamant it was knocked on but the camera didn’t pan across fast enough to show, the try is awarded. It’s 25-21 for UBC still but they’re down to 14 players and the Ravens are pressing. Five minutes later they’re over again a short pick and go set up by strong backline play, 28-25 now, the Ravens first lead. Ravens scored again through prolonged forward pressure inside the UBC 10 metres, 35-25. The Ravens scored one last try, Josiah Morra blocks a clearing kick, flicks it back to Joe Locke who feeds it back to Morra, 40-25 final. Next week UBC have a bye and the Ravens visit CW at Windsor Park.

PREGAME

UBC are in 2nd place currently with a 2-0 record and 9 points. The Ravens are 1-0 with a big win over Meraloma in Week 2.

The top match of the weekend, a rematch of the 2025 final. UBC have three national team players back Cody Nhanala, Stephen Webb and Liam James. It’s their ‘A’ roster.

Not to be outdone, the Ravens have Lucas Rumball and Takoda McMullin returning from the national team. Rumball’s return moves Brian Ndirangu from openside flanker to second row. Jamin Hodgkins starts at #10 moving Andrew Coe to fullback. Takoda McMullin starts at outside centre.

This should be a great game and since it’s hosted by UBC it should be live streamed, we’ll add that link when it’s available. The Ravens are looking for a four-peat championship, UBC will be one of the few teams who could stop them. Going with the Ravens on this one, should be interesting. Prediction: Ravens by +3.

A bonus point win for Burnaby, Leo Chen second row and captain, selected as Man of the Match. Next week Burnaby visit the Lomas and the Vikes visit the Rowers. Impressive that the Vikes media crew were able to stream an away match, shout out to them for job well done.

PREGAME

Burnaby with two close losses are sitting at 0-2 with 2 BP. UVic are 0-1, losing to UBC.

Burnaby pushed UBC last week, it was only the last quarter fitness that was the difference for the students. Burnaby are up against another university side this week, both lost to UBC by 10 points. It’s a similar roster to last week but with the addition of Ethan Turner in the centres, that’s a boost for them. The Fijians made a big difference last week, they’re usually good for a try or two in the match.

The Vikes have Josh McIndoe back but are missing Cooper Coats. They move the loose forwards around with #8 Ronin Smith missing this week, Aidan de Wit comes off the bench to start at openside flanker. Jack Driscoll starts at #10 with Michael Oughtred moving to fullback. Brendan Kim is in the reserves with Kale Jones getting the start at tighthead prop.

This is a tough one to pick, Burnaby at home, can they weather the last 20 against a fit UVic side. UVic with Cooper Coats is a different team, he’s not in the roster this week. I’ll give a slight edge to the home team. Prediction: Burnaby by +2.

An emphatic bonus point win for the Bays at home, they are looking a formidable side early in the competition. Next week the Bays host Capilano in the battle of the undefeated teams. CW host the Ravens.

PREGAME

The Bays are 1-0 with a win over Bayside in Week 1. CW are also 1-0 with a win over Rowers in Week 1.

The Bays are putting together a strong roster that could challenge this year, definitely playoff bound. Looking through their national level players this week, Tyler Matchem, Kainoa Lloyd, Josh Thiel, Austin Creighton, D’Shawn Bowen, Callum Botchar. A new #10 Alistair Ledingham, he doesn’t show in our records but a wider search reveals a player capped for Germany of that name. The bench looks strong with Beck, Botchar, Bowen, Creighton ready to make an impact. It’s Mike Nieuwenhuysen’s 100th cap for the Bays, congrats to him.

CW haven’t published their roster on social media yet but the PlayHQ system has a partial roster. It looks to be a similar roster to Week 1. Angus Boyd-Porter and Sam Blundell are added to the bench. We’ll check back when their full roster is published.

The Bays look the real deal this year, the problem may be keeping their national level players for the season. This roster looks strong. Prediction: Bays by +7.

And the Caps keep rolling, their 3rd consecutive BP win keeps them top of the table. They’ll find a tougher match next week when they visit the Bays, also undefeated. The Sharks will host Westshore next week.

PREGAME

Capilano sit top of the table with 2 BP wins to start the season. Bayside have split their first 2 matches and have 6 points.

Bayside rotate a couple of forwards into the starting XV, Lewis Hodnett at loosehead prop and Anasa Qaranivalu at lock. Stuart Gormley missing at scrum half and Oliver Murphy comes off the bench to start at #9.

The Caps have Tyler Wong at blindside flanker and Pat Zuk in the second row, the only changes in the forwards. Tom Morris doesn’t show in their initial roster, that would be a loss, young Daniel Turvey gets the start. Former UBC star Demetri Patterson returns to the roster on the wing.

Caps go in as favourites, especially at home, 2 BP wins in a row. Prediction: Caps by +7.

The Lomas claim their first win of the season, the Rowers will have to wait with the hope of next week when they host UVic. The Lomas host Burnaby next week. Kudos to the Rowers (or BCRU) for live streaming the match, link below. It’s only VEO Ai but better than nothing. It was 19-5 Lomas at the half.

PREGAME

The Rowers and Lomas both sitting with 1 BP and 0-2 records, one team will get their first win of the season.

The Lomas with a few bench rotations in the forwards, Alex Tagg comes into the match 23 to start at blindside flanker.  The backline 10 to 15 remains the same and Polynesia Crichton comes off the bench to start at #9.

The Rowers have a partial roster on PlayHQ but no posted roster yet on social media. There’s some rotation in the backline and one sub from the bench in the front row. The only new player in the starting XV seems to be openside flanker Chase Cooke from Week 1.

The first home game at Brockton Oval for the Rowers in Premier in many years. The Lomas did score 40 points against a good Capilano side in Week 1, the Rowers lost to the other promoted team Bayside last week. We’ll go with the Lomas since CW defeated the Rowers in Week 1 and the Lomas finished ahead of CW last season. Prediction: Lomas by +5.

PREGAME

It’s Week 1 of the women’s Premier. It’s difficult to predict form in Week 1. Both of these teams made it to the semi-finals last season, Westshore made it to the finals but lost to the Thunderbirds. Westshore usually get a bit stronger once the university season is over and some of the UVic players move over. Comparing the rosters from the semi-finals in May, Westshore missing a couple of key players Vanessa Chiapetta and Kendra Cousineau. Burnaby missing Miriama Naiobasali and Ava van Santen. Should be close, think the home team have the advantage. Prediction Burnaby by +2.

The score finally came in Monday morning, the BCRU PlayHQ system still doesn’t have scores entered. The standard to be newsworthy is have rosters out Friday afternoon, not Friday evening or Saturday morning and have results available Saturday evening. Next week the Ravens visit CW and the Thunderbirds host Westshore.

PREGAME

The Thunderbirds, who are basically the UBC team, get stronger when the university season ends. They’ve won 5 titles in a row, they’ll likely win this match. Ravens defaulted last season and didn’t finish, they’re taking a second stab at it, it would be interesting to know what their numbers are like, they don’t have a roster posted at the time of writing. The Thunderbirds have a roster with a lot of new forwards, but some talent in the backline with Sara Tehrani, Chloe Bong, Lanae Davenport, and Piper Logan. Without knowing the Ravens roster it’s difficult to tell but I’m guessing it will be a double digit win for the Thunderbirds. Prediction: Thunderbirds by +10.

It looks like CW dutifully filled in the PlayHQ stats, so we can report that their tries were scored by Kira Katan and Jenna de Greeff. Kudos to CW for using the reporting system as intended.

PREGAME

The Lomas made it to the semi-finals last year where they lost to Westshore, they claimed first place through most of the season. They don’t have a roster posted at the time of writing, so we’ve posted their roster from last season’s semi-final. One of their key players was Flora Poole in the centres, we’ll see if she returns this season. CW made the playoffs but didn’t make the semi-finals last season. Without knowing the returning Loma players it’s difficult to predict an outcome, CW have added Temitope Ogunjimi as a loose forward, that’s a bonus for them. Checking the PlayHQ system, the Lomas have a number of players listed but with no numbers assigned, C- grade for the team manager. Flora Poole is listed along with Stacey Warner, Cassidy Gale, Sara Hernandez, Bea Collier-Pandya, Deanna Cvitanovich and a number of other starters. We’ll see if the Lomas continue on from last season’s form? Prediction: Lomas by +3.
