Canada U18 Men – 2023

Canada Defeat Belgium 22-17 to Finish 3rd at Corendon U18 Tournament

Canada defeated Belgium 22-17 but they didn’t make it easy on themselves. Canada gave up three first half tries on the outside plus earned themselves a yellow card for some chippy play off the ball, they were down 17-0 with 10 minutes left in the first half. They were almost down four tries as Belgium ran another one in on the outside but it was called back and a red card given the Belgian player, that was the turning point in the match.

Canada would start the 2nd half down 17-0 but up a man and with a strong wind at their back. It didn’t take long for Canada to score with replacement centre #21 Josh McIndoe crossing the line from first phase ball off a lineout. It was now 17-5 with 30 minutes remaining. Canada’s next score was off a quick tap from a penalty, the ball found its way out to #8, Liam Kinghorn, who bulled over the line. It was now 17-12 with 26 minutes remaining. Another replacement, #22 Luke Van Dam, made his presence felt with a weaving run off a loose ball. He was stopped short of the line but replacement prop, #17 Thorson Noble, dove over the line for the score. The try was converted and Canada were in the lead for the first time, 19-17, with 16 minutes remaining. Matt Bennett, the #10, slotted a penalty from the 22 with 12 minutes on the clock, 22-17, which was the final score.

As last year a USA player was selected Tournament MVP, their scrum half, Spencer Huntly.

from Rugby Canada

Canada’s U18 Men’s Rugby Team will play three matches in Amsterdam this July as part of the Corendon Rugby Summer Tour.

Canada opens the tour against the Netherlands on July 8 at 5:00 p.m. local time (8:00 a.m. PT / 11:00 a.m. ET). This is followed by a match against the USA on July 12 at 2:00 p.m. local time (5:00 a.m. PT / 8:00 a.m. ET). The tour will conclude with Canada taking on Belgium on July 15 at 2:45 p.m. local time (5:45 a.m. PT / 8:45 a.m. ET).

Mike Curran (Mississauga Blues RFC Director of Rugby) leads the team as Head Coach, supported on the coaching staff by Pacific Pride Forwards Coach Hubert Buydens, University of British Columbia Men’s Rugby Head Coach Curry Hitchborn, and St. George’s School coach Bill Chamberlain.

“The Corendon Summer Tour is the first experience many of our emerging players will have in international rugby,” said Curran. “Games at this level are essential in preparing our athletes to compete at the U20 and senior levels.”

Following three regional camps held in Vancouver, Guelph and Halifax, 59 players were invited out of 200 to attend a national camp in Abbotsford in April, leading to the final selection of Canada’s 26-player roster.

More information on how to follow the Corendon Rugby Summer Tour will be available shortly.
