from Rugby Canada
Canadas U23 Womens Rugby Team opened the two-match Border Battle against the USA with a win at Veterans Memorial Stadium, the home of the MLRs New England Free Jacks, on Wednesday night.
Two players who made their senior national team debut earlier this month in Ottawa combined for Canadas first try. Mya Brubacher offloaded the ball to Claire Gallagher, who touched it down between the uprights in the 17th minute. Gallagher, who is captaining the team in Massachusetts, converted the try to give Canada a 7-0 lead.
Savannah Bauder scored twice within five minutes to further Canadas lead to 17-0, which the team carried into half-time. Neither team was able to score for much of the second half, with significant defensive plays made at both ends of the pitch. Rachel Smith broke the stalemate in the 65th minute, with Gallagher kicking another clean conversion to make the score 24-0.
The United States scored in the final minute of play to put the final score at 24-5.

Were very excited about the opportunity ahead of us, said Dan Valley, U23 womens program lead and Queens University Head Coach. Weve selected an outstanding group of players, a roster filled top to bottom with U SPORTS All-Canadians, Conference All-Stars, and Maple Leaf Academy players.
As with any tour of this nature, our biggest challenge will be attuning to each others habits as quickly as possible so that were ready to get in the ring with the USA on July 26. I am very confident in the work that our squad has been doing in the build-up to our tour, and I am even more confident that well be ready to get to work when we assemble in Boston on July 20.
Selection for the U23 womens program consisted through nominations led by university coaches and provincial unions. Further emphasizing the connection between the age grade and senior womens programs, Head Coach Kevin Rouet will lead the U23 team in Massachusetts, supported by U23 Assistant Coaches Brittany Waters (University of Victoria Head Coach) and Blake Wilson (Queens University Assistant Coach).
