UBC Win Second CanWest Rugby 7s Tournament, UVic 2nd, TWU 3rd – Final Tournament at TWU
VANCOUVER – Once again it all came down to the final game of the weekend, but this time the UBC Thunderbirds claimed the glory and the top spot ahead of the University of Victoria Vikes at the second Canada West women’s rugby 7s series tournament of the year.
Both teams had a perfect record of four wins going into their clash at Thunderbird Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but the Thunderbirds got revenge for the Vikes breaking their 18-game winning streak at the first tournament in Edmonton three weeks ago, coming from behind for a hard-fought 17-7 win against their bitter BC rivals to finish top of the standings.
UBC finished the tournament with 28 tries, with Sarah MacPherson leading the team in scoring with six of those tries. Sara Kaljuvee kicked nine conversions for the Thunderbirds.
UVic ran over 19 tries in their five matches, with Maggie MacKinnon leading both the Vikes and the tournament in scoring, putting up 46 points from her four tries and 13 conversions.
Trinity Western finished third in the standings after a pair of wins on Saturday, beating Calgary Dinos 15-5 and Alberta Pandas for a final record of three wins and two losses on the weekend. Danika Dool led the Spartans with four tries.
Calgary came up with a big 19-5 win over Lethbridge Pronghorns in their final game of the tournament to finish 4th with a record of one win, one draw, and three defeats.
Lethbridge finish 5th in the standings with one win and four defeats from their five games, while Alberta were 6th, with a final record of one draw and four defeats.
