Kamloops 7s Weekend Wraps Up: Alberta Teams Win Six Out of Ten Titles
In 2025 BC teams won 8 out of the 10 titles and 4 out of 4 of the Elite/Competitive titles. In 2026 BC won 4 out of the 10 titles and 1 out of 4 of the Elite/Competitive titles. In 2026 Alberta teams were the big winners, despite only representing 20% of the entrants they claimed 60% of the titles and 75% of the Elite titles. Is this an anomaly or does it mark a shift in youth rugby?
Do the results indicate any long term patterns? Alberta have always had outstanding athletes, perhaps not the depth to dominate at XVs where their U19 teams are well behind Ontario and BC. However in 7s this year’s results are worth noting. Another explainer, at least in the U18 Boys Elite, CW didn’t enter a team this year. CW won last year and along with the Ravens are perennially the top two BC U18 teams in XVs, neither entered in the 7s this year. Comox won the Girls Elite, they were 2nd last year, Abbotsford won last year but didn’t finish top 3 this year. The U16 Competitive is also interesting, two Calgary clubs won this year, last year Abbotsford and Langley won Gold, this year Abbotsford came second in both boys and girls. It will be interesting to see what happens in 2027 at the Kamloops 7s and if Alberta becomes more competitive in the U19 XVs over the next couple of years.

The 2026 Kamloops 7s wrapped up another successful weekend of youth Rugby 7s at McArthur Island Park, bringing together teams from across British Columbia and beyond for two days of fast-paced competition and celebration.
Held on September 19-20 in Canada’s Tournament Capital, the event once again showcased why the Kamloops 7s has established itself as the premier youth Rugby 7s events in Canada, with 110 teams competing across 10 Divisions in blazing sunshine throughout the weekend.
From the opening whistle on Saturday morning through to Sunday’s Championship matches, players battled through an action-packed schedule across the tournament’s 10 fields, with athletes competing in U18, U16 and U14 Boys and Girls Divisions.
The weekend provided an opportunity for young athletes to test themselves against some of the best Age-Grade athletes in the province and beyond, while coaches, officials, volunteers and families helped create the festival atmosphere that has become synonymous with the Kamloops 7s event.
The tournament also marked the first year that the U18 Boys and U18 Girls Elite Championship Shields were presented under their new names, recognizing two individuals who have played an important role in the growth of Rugby 7s in British Columbia.
CV Rapids Rugby lifted the Darcy Patterson Shield as they were crowned U18 Girls Elite Champions, while the Strathcona Druids hoisted the Nathan Hirayama Shield in the U18 Boys Elite Divisions.

Away from the pitch, players, families and spectators were able to enjoy a weekend of food, merchandise and gorgeous weather at McArthur Island Park, adding to the event’s festival atmosphere.

Kamloops 7s Youth Tournament September 19th and 20th – App Shows 123 Teams Registered
Billed as the “largest youth Rugby 7s tournament in Canada that attracts teams from across British Columbia and beyond” the Kamloops 7s takes place September 19th and 20th at McArthur Island Park, 1655 Island Pkwy, Kamloops. Last year there were 128 teams in 10 divisions competing over 10 fields, in 2024 there were 122 teams. It will be interesting to see the team count this year. The Kamloops 7s website hasn’t published the numbers yet but the Kamloops 7s app does have the teams entered, we’re not sure if it’s complete but we’ll go through the divisions. The total, based on the App info on September 2nd, is 123 total teams, 55 boys, 68 girls. Interesting stat compared to last year, the boys are down 8 teams, the girls up 3 teams.
