VIRU 150th

Ontario Blues Defeat Island Tide 47-19 After Trailing 19-7 at HT

It was a game of two halves as the first half featured the Tide 1st team vs Blues 2nd team and the second half was the Blues 1st team vs Tide 2nd team. The rosters were 28 players each as Ontario used it as a warm up match for the two game series versus BC. The first half ended 19-7 in the Tide’s favour and when the lineups switched it was 40-0 for Ontario in the 2nd half.

It will be interesting to see who gets selected for BC, for the Tide Brock Gallagher and Gradyn Bowd looked good as a 9/10 combination in the first half. D’Shawn Bowen as expected looked dangerous, both Gallagher and Bowen scored tries in the first half. The Tide scrum looked good in the first half with Emerson Prior, Neil Trainor and Theo Espagnol.

For Ontario their 1st team scrum changed the dynamics, Matt Tierney, the former Top 14 prop, owned his side of the scrum, their maul went through the Tide 2nd team like a hot knife through butter. James Stockwood had a big rumble and scored a try.

The first Ontario vs BC match will be on Wednesday at Klahanie, I suspect we’ll get a proper 23 player roster from both squads for that match. Hopefully 24 hours before the match.

Some notes from the sideline, we heard it’s a definite that the Pacific Pride won’t be back in the fall in the BC Premier. There will be some centralized training going on though, what it looks like we’ll wait and see. It might be players training during the week and playing with clubs on the weekend. I had a chance to chat with iconic former national team player DTH at the match, he’s a police officer now!  It was good to see so many familiar faces at the match, Phil Mack and Brett Beukeboom were coaching the Tide, former Canada prop Jen Ross organized the event as the current President of the VIRU, former Canada legends like Tom Woods, Gary Dukelow were in attendance. It was an enjoyable Sunday afternoon of rugby.

We have a lot of photos of the women’s west camp scrimmage and the first half of the men’s game which we’ll post on Monday.

Vancouver Island Crimson Tide vs Ontario Blues + Women’s West Camp Intrasquad Match – Roster Updat

Sunday is a rugby day this week. There’s a lot going on at UVic’s Wallace Field with the women’s west camp intrasquad match followed by the Vancouver Island Crimson Tide taking on the Ontario Blues. The rosters available at the time of writing are posted below.

The Tide roster is verified, we’ve just seen the Blues roster published Sunday morning, it’s posted below. The Blues aren’t starting their top lineup, they’ll reserve that for the BC games, but all 28 players will get game time so expecting an ebb and flow to the match as some of “starters” sub into the match.

The women’s intrasquad rosters are unverified but these are the preliminary rosters we have. We’ll update this article throughout the day as new information is made available.

The live stream is scheduled for the BCRU YouTube page, see below.
