A good day at the office for the Canadian women as they defeated two high ranked opponents, USA and England before falling to Cup winners New Zealand. It was particularly pleasing to defeat England, a team Canada has had problems with in earlier tournaments. In the NZ game, Canada came out strong scoring two early tries but NZ finished strong scoring the last 3 tries and winning by a 5 try to 4 margin. Still an excellent result and Canada jumped over the USA and Australia in the series standings to take 3rd place overall, a fitting end to their iRB 7s season. Now Canada prepares for the World Cup in Moscow in late June.

Not a spectacular day for Canada in the last tournament of the women’s iRB series. Canada currently sits in 5th place and will have to up their game tomorrow to improve that ranking.
Canada started off losing to a team that is ranked significantly lower. 14th ranked France kicked a penalty at the whistle to defeat Canada 8-7, that would put Canada under pressure from the beginning. They bounced back to find their scoring touch against South Africa, winning 36-7 but then failed to score against England, losing 14-0. Those results put Canada 3rd in their pool but due to the tournament structure they narrowly slid into the Cup round as the top 3rd place finisher.
Tomorrow Canada face an undefeated USA side that finished on top of pool C. Canada has defeated USA several times recently so it’s not a bad draw, probably better than facing some of the other on-form teams such as New Zealand, England or Australia. The other quarter-finals see New Zealand face Spain, Australia against a surprisingly strong Russia side and England face France. Hosts Netherlands didn’t make the Cup round being dispatched 22-0 by Russia in the pool round.

The Amsterdam 7s starts tomorrow (Friday) with Canada’s first match at 11:06am (local time) against France. They then face South Africa at 13:50 and England at 16:12. There are 3 pools of 4 teams so almost all teams go through to the Cup quarter-finals on Day 2 (except bottom 4). Day 2 is when the real action starts with Day 1 jostling for the best match up in the Cup round.
Heather Moyse is making her first appearance for the national women’s side this season. The 34 year old Moyse is possibly aiming for her third World Cup appearance as she was a member of the 2006 and 2010 World Cup teams (XVs). Moyse is probably best known for her gold medal performance in the 2 women bobsleigh at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.
Changes from London include Heather Moyse, Arielle Dubissette-Borrice, Julia Greenshields, Cheryl Phillips in; Jessica Dovanne, Ghislaine Landry, Ashley Steacy, Julianne Zussman out.
