Collingwood and Robert Bateman to Meet in Boys AAA Final

A new champion will be crowned this year, perennial winners Shawnigan Lake and St. George’s were both defeated in the semis. Not many people had this on their score card at the beginning of the season. Oak Bay in 2018 were the last team to break the St. George’s/Shawnigan dominance in the tournament. The St. George’s v Robert Bateman match was close 14-13 but the Collingwood match against Shawnigan broke open in the 2nd half after an even 14-14 half time score, Collingwood owned the second half and put up a 43-14 scoreline. The final is on Saturday.

In the girls XVs semis it was #1 Yale defeating DW Poppy 33-20 and #2 Shawnigan Lake defeating GP Vanier 18-14. In boys AA semis it was Charles Tupper defeating RA McMath 36-14, the score for the DW Poppy vs Argyle match wasn’t posted at time of writing. The BCSS results page has the latest updates.

The BC high school rugby Provincials kick off this week, from Wednesday to Saturday for XVs and Thursday and Friday for 7s, all at Abbotsford Exhibition Park. This article is focused on XVs, we’ll also create a separate article on the 7s competition. The last time a school other than Shawnigan or St. George’s won the AAA title was 2018 with Oak Bay claiming the title, St. George’s won it the last three years, Shawnigan had a two year run before that (tournament was cancelled during COVID). This year Collingwood and Robert Bateman are ranked above St. George’s and Shawnigan, could this be the year of a new champion or will St. George’s and Shawnigan up their game in the finals? We’ll  find out more on Wednesday, here are the brackets for the AAA championship. Also a note on the Junior boys championships which wrapped up yesterday, Earl Marriott placed 1st, Collingwood 2nd, Shawnigan 3rd, full results here.

In the Girls XVs it’s Yale, Shawnigan and G.P. Vanier ranked top 3, last year G.P. Vanier won the title. In Boys AA it’s Sir Charles Tupper, Argyle and DW Poppy as the top 3, last year Collingwood claimed the title over Robert Bateman, both of those teams have gone up to AAA this year.

  1. Good luck to all! We just had a reunion for the Victoria High Titans, BC Championship years 1977 and 1978! Memorable event in our lives, the BC Championships. There wasn’t any Tiers back then and lots of schools played rugby. In Victoria in the late 70’s all 9 high schools had a competitive team.

  2. Shout out to Tupper for winning the AA Provincial finals and too Claremont for what I believe might be one of their highest finishes ever in the Provincial Championships.

  3. Worst thing for High School rugby is having the same teams win year after year. Good on Collingwood to break that trend.
