Analyzing the BC Premier Schedule – Calculating Difficulty Factor per Team
With the release this week of the men’s Premier schedule for the spring of 2022, we’ve put some numbers to the unbalanced schedule to derive a figure to indicate the relative difficulty of each team’s schedule.
First we gathered the ranking of each team when the Premier league was shutdown in March 2020 due to COVID. We assigned a value so that the #1 team received 12 points and the last place team 1 point. Nanaimo aren’t in the league anymore so are skipped.
Ranking in March 2020
1 UBC – 12pts
2 Burnaby – 11pts
3 Capilano – 10pts
4 UBCOB – 9pts
5 Pacific Pride – 8pts
6 CW – 7pts
7 Seattle – 6pts
8 JBAA – 5pts
9 UVic – 4pts
10 Westshore – 3pts
11 Meraloma – 2pts
12 Nanaimo
13 Rowers – 1pt
Next we add the numbers to come up with a difficulty level for each club based on opponents. We list from most difficult to least difficult.
#1 Schedule Difficulty Level based on opponent’s previous season ranking
Westshore: 7, 9, 10, 6, 8, 4, 11, 12 = 67
Meraloma: 1, 8, 7, 10, 11, 9, 6, 12 = 64
JBAA: 8, 12, 4, 1, 6, 9, 11, 7 = 58
Rowers: 6, 2, 5, 12, 9, 8, 4, 10 = 56
UVic: 11, 5, 9, 7, 3, 12, 1, 6 = 54
Pride: 5, 2, 3, 12, 1, 10, 9, 11 = 53
Capilano: 12, 6, 3, 11, 2, 7, 8, 1 = 50
CW: 3, 11, 6, 2, 4, 10, 5, 9 = 50
Burnaby: 4, 7, 10, 9, 2, 3, 5, 8 = 48
Seattle: 1, 10, 7, 3, 5, 12, 2, 4 = 44
UBCOB: 3, 4, 11, 1, 5, 2, 8, 7 = 41
UBC: 10, 5, 1, 8, 4, 6, 3, 2 = 39
Next we add in the travel difficulty, assigning 2 points difficulty for each cross strait or cross border trip.
#2 Travel Difficulty Level (+2 for every cross strait trip or cross border trip)
Pride = 12
Seattle = 8
Burnaby = 6
UBCOB = 6
JBAA = 6
Rowers = 4
Westshore = 4
CW = 4
UBC = 4
Meraloma = 2
Capilano = 2
UVic = 2
We then add #1 and #2 which gives the total difficulty level for the various clubs in this upcoming season’s schedule. The average is 57 with Westshore having the most difficult schedule at 71 and UBC the least difficult schedule at 43.
#3 Total Schedule Difficulty Level #1 + #2
Westshore = 71
Meraloma = 66
Pride = 65
JBAA = 64
Rowers = 60
UVic = 56
Burnaby = 54
CW = 54
Capilano = 52
Seattle = 52
UBCOB = 47
UBC = 43
