World Rugby 7s Series – 2022

World Rugby Releases Sevens Schedule for Malaga, Spain – January 21-23

The schedules and pools have been released for the World Rugby 7s Series taking place in Malaga, Spain on January 21-23.

The Canadian men are in a pool with France, Kenya and Wales. Not a bad draw considering it’s the first tournament that Great Britain are disbanded and Wales, Scotland and England are playing as separate countries. France and Kenya are in 7th and 8th place currently, Canada are in 11th, Wales are given an initial ranking of 13th place. Canada have avoided all the top countries South Africa, Argentina, Australia, USA and Fiji so a good chance to make it through to the quarter-finals for the first time this season.

The Canadian women aren’t quite as fortunate as they draw Fiji, USA and NZ, three tough matches. NZ and England are coming in ranked at the bottom of the tournament, along with Poland. Pool A lucked out getting Poland while Pool B got NZ and Pool C England. Pool A was the place to be. The women are in a precarious place already, tied for last place with Ireland, with England and NZ below them but both teams are likely to accumulate points quickly as they enter the series for the first time this season.

World Rugby haven’t released the relegation scenarios in this fractured season but Canada are in a precarious position in both the men’s and women’s series after two tournaments, sitting near the bottom of the rankings, and need to start accumulating some quarter-final points.
