BC Rugby Weekend of April 1st 2023

BC Premier Week 11 Results & Rosters: UVic Fall to Pride; Caps Top Seattle; Lomas Edge Burnaby; CW Topple Bays; UBC Dominate Westshore; Ravens Paddle Rowers

[ed. rosters posted in format last week/this week]

It took us a while this week to get the scores out, the BCRU system had JBAA defeating CW but in fact it was CW with the win. The BCRU system doesn’t have a central person responsible for scores but relies on refs entering the scores post match and there have been a few data entry errors lately. We’ve verified most of these scores with a secondary source. We’re also assuming the BCRU table accurately calculated bonus points from today’s results. UPDATE: Our assumption was apparently wrong, the BCRU table is incorrect, CW didn’t get a bonus point in their win which changes the playoff picture, we’ve revised our article accordingly.

Friday

Pacific Pride 39 v University Of Victoria 19 @ 18:00
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: Mckenzie Eckart AR2: Soleil Brooks
Venue: Starlight Stadium

A third loss in a row for the Vikes, it’s not looking good for them entering the playoffs in 2 weeks time. The Pride turned things around to end their season with a win. Where they go from here in terms of exhibition matches remains to be seen. It’s looking like a Vikes v Burnaby quarter-final match in 2 weeks.

PREGAME
Pacific Pride hosting #4 UVic. The Pride aren’t eligible for the playoffs but a bonus point win for UVic will guarantee them 4th place and a home field quarter-final. If UVic lose they could be overtaken by Burnaby or James Bay, if those teams win.

The Pride are still missing their backrow players Matt Klimchuk and Zephyr Melnyk. Reid Davis is moved from second row to #8 and Seif Sanad from #8 to openside flanker. The halfbacks are changed from last week, in are Sam Reimer and Justin Taylor. Sion Griffiths gets the start at outside centre ahead of Noah Flesch and Lucas Scheck returns to the roster at wing.

UVic have just one change in the forwards as Phoenix Moller gets the start at loosehead prop. Jenner Teufel returns at scrum half, and Marcus Lott gets the start on the wing.

The Pride just narrowly defeated the Rowers last week, a team with only one win this season. The Vikes have lost two in a row to Burnaby and Seattle. The Vikes have more riding on this game so motivation is on their side. The Pride still missing key players to injury and 7s. Prediction: Vikes by 3.

Saturday

Capilano 38 v Seattle 19 @ 14:30
Referee: Nathaniel Hight
Venue: Klahanie Park

A bonus point win for Caps but it doesn’t change their place in the standings, they end up tied with JBAA at 27 points but the first tie breaking rule is the result between the two tied teams. JBAA won the head to head match. It’s looking like a UBC v Capilano quarter-final. Seattle are out of the playoffs.

PREGAME
#8 Capilano hosting Seattle. Caps are guaranteed at least the last playoff spot, Seattle aren’t in the playoffs.

Caps have their core players in the starting lineup but are missing Glenn McKinnon. Seattle don’t have their roster published at time of writing.

Seattle don’t travel well when home results are compared to away results. They were pummelled by CW last weekend on the road. Another road trip to finish off the season. Caps narrowly lost last weekend on the road to JBAA. A bonus point win may move them up a spot if CW lose to JBAA. They’ll likely either face UBC or Ravens in the quarter-finals. Prediction: Caps by 8.

James Bay AA 13 v Castaway Wanderers 24 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: Claude Paterson AR2: Martin Thornton
Venue: MacDonald Park

A win for CW but without a bonus point, the result leaves them tied with Burnaby in the standings at 28 points but Burnaby won the head to head match. It’s looking like a Lomas v CW quarter-final matchup. The Bays finish in 7th place so earn a visit to the Ravens in the quarter-finals.

PREGAME
#6 JBAA hosting #7 CW. This should be an epic battle, both teams in the playoffs but fighting for ranking and a possible home venue if the teams above them lose.

CW have a few changes, #8 Nick Carson not in the roster but Michael Smith a good replacement. Utility back Brandon Schellenberger moves from centre to fullback. Ethan Hager comes onto the bench. It’s a strong looking roster including 3 capped players (Ilnicki, Smith, Nott) and 2 MLR Draft picks (Fatt, Hager).

The Bays have no changes to their starting XV from last week. Kainoa Lloyd on the outside is always a threat.

The Bays defeated Capilano last week in a close +4 match while CW put a +35 thumping on Seattle. Should be a good crowd with supporters from both sides in attendance. A bit of a coin toss but CW have perhaps more depth, the Bays had to default their Div 1 quarter-final match. Prediction: CW by 2.

2 Denver Fatt

Burnaby Lake 15 v Meraloma 25 @ 16:00
Referee: Saro Turner
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club

The Lomas secure 3rd place going into the playoffs, Burnaby 5th. It looks like Lomas will host CW and Burnaby will visit UVic in the quarter-finals.

PREGAME
#5 Burnaby hosting #3 Meraloma. A win by Burnaby will give them a shot at 4th place and hosting a quarter-final match. A win by Lomas will ensure their 3rd place finish and a shot at #2 if Ravens falter on the weekend.

Burnaby front row remains the same, some shifting of the backrow with Kimi Vunituraga and Callum Cruickshank not in the roster. Francis Denny gets the #10 assignment and some changes in the back three as Fitzpatrick moves to the wing and Ethan Turner starts at fullback.

The Lomas have three changes in the forwards with Corne Ludick starting at hooker, Jim Mulvany at second row and Thomas Williams at openside flanker. Younger and Hamade come off the bench to start in the centres.

The Lomas upset #1 UBC last weekend, while Burnaby defeated UVic on the road. Lomas still looking like the surprise team this season, especially after knocking off the #1 ranked team. Prediction: Lomas by 5.

UBC 134 v Westshore 0 @ 14:30
Referee: Christopher Assmus
Venue: Gerald McGavin Centre

We did verify the score, it’s not a data entry issue. UBC retain top spot and will host Capilano in the quarter-finals. Westshore will have to take a review of their program for next season.

PREGAME
#1 UBC hosting Westshore. Westshore out of the playoff race, UBC with a bonus point win will put a lock on 1st place.

UBC have a few changes in the roster, O’Flaherty at tighthead, Mcnulty at second row, Jared Andrews – Almack starting on the wing. It’s a strong looking roster.

Westshore don’t have their roster at time of writing, they’re playing a Div 1 match in Abbotsford at 11am, then over to UBC at 2:30pm. They’re still looking for their first win of the season in Premier.

It should be a lot to a little for the home team. Prediction: UBC by 18.

Vancouver Rowing Club 7 v UBCOB Ravens 44 @ 14:30
Referee: David Smortchevsky
Venue: Brockton Oval

The Ravens wrap up 2nd place and will host James Bay in the quarter-finals. The Rowers move on to planning for next season. An early prediction on the playoffs based on late season form would see a UBC v Burnaby and a Ravens v Lomas semi-final matchup but there may be upsets in the quarter-finals.

PREGAME
Rowers hosting #2 Ravens. A win will ensure 2nd place in the standings for the Ravens and home field against the #7 team in the quarter-finals. Rowers are out of the playoffs.

Ravens are trying some new combinations with Carsons at #2 to #5. Alex Ball returns at scrum half and Cole Keffer on the wing.
