BC Premier Week 6 Results & Rosters: T-Birds Clobber Bays, CW Edge Pride, Caps Draw With Lomas, Ravens Narrowly Defeat Seattle, Burnaby Sink Rowers, Vikes Pummel Westshore
It’s week 6 of the 11 week regular season, with 3 more weekends of playoff action for the top 6 teams (7 as the Pride aren’t eligible for post season).
This week we’ve listed the rosters in a slightly different fashion, we posted last week’s roster with this week’s changes noted as /playername. It’s easier for us to note the changes and provides the reader with a comparison of the previous week.
James Bay 34 v UBC 55 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Malcolm Klaver AR2: Martin Thornton
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park
We apologize for posting the incorrect score originally, we get the official results from the BCRU who get the score from the refs. They had the result posted as 34-8 for the Bays. Anyway this is the result we expected, now verified by others. UBC are #1 with 25 points, the Bays drop to 6th place with 19 pts. There’s no Premier rugby next weekend as it’s the Family Day weekend, play resumes February 25th, UBC host UVic and the Bays visit the Pride. That match is listed as being hosted in Cowichan.
PREGAME
The #4 Bays hosting the #2 UBC Thunderbirds. UBC clobbered the Pacific Pride last week while the Bays struggled to get past the winless Westshore. Home field advantage will be in the Bays favour but will it be enough to stop the T-Birds?
UBC have a couple of their players called into the 7s program during the North American stops of LA and Vancouver. Jack Carson and Matt Percillier are seconded to the 7s program and are unavailable this weekend. Talon McMullin is also unavailable and Ethan Berry comes off the bench to cover inside centre. James Biss comes into #10 with Owain Cormack moving to fullback. Jacob Bourne moves from wing to take the scrum half spot.
The Bays only see a couple of changes with Shea Wakefield returning to the blindside flanker role which pushes Andrew Montgrand to the second row. The remaining starting XV is unchanged.
The Bays at home are always a tough contest for a young university side, especially one missing a couple of key players. The T-Birds should have enough attacking weapons to prevail. Prediction: UBC by 5.

Castaway Wanderers 10 v Pacific Pride 7 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: Christopher Assmus AR2: Carter Haddow
Venue: Windsor Park
A bit of a shocker, not so much in CW winning but the Pride being held to 7 points. Again looking at the coaching, Ken Goodland, gets a nod, making the final last year and slowly building this season. The Pride are struggling with their top players moving on to professional contracts or seconded to the national 7s program. The result keeps CW (15 pts) in 8th place but only a point behind the last playoff spot. The Pride (20 pts) drop to 5th place. CW visit Westshore on February 25th and the Pride host James Bay.
PREGAME
CW at #8 hosting the #3 Pride. CW squeaked by UVic last weekend while the Pride were humbled by UBC. The Pride will want to put in a good performance to redeem themselves as the national academy program.
The Pride have again given up players to the 7s program, Max Stewart is the latest player to have moved over as the 7s program tries to avoid series relegation this year. Justin Taylor steps up to take the #10 role this week. There’s changes all around with Tyler Matchem, Reid Davis, Zephyr Melnyk and Matt Klimchuk keeping their spots in the forwards. In the backs only Noah Flesch and Alan Berros retain their starting roles from last week. On a sidenote, one of the key players the Pride lost from last season was Callum Botchar who was moved to the 7s program but then put on the shelf, we were thinking Luke Bradley all over again but heard some good news, he’s heading to NZ to play. We heard Taranaki but we’ll try to find out more information on that.
CW sees a few changes, a rotation of the props with Kratz and Ilnicki starting. Cam Sandison gets the start at openside flanker. Zech Pilgrim starts at scrum half with Brandon Schellenberger moving to the centres. Brennig Prevost is likely back to the 7s program so Harry Elliot takes his spot at fullback.
Again CW with home field advantage will be a tough match but expecting the Pride to rebound from last week’s performance. Prediction: Pride by 7.

Vancouver Rowing Club 3 v Burnaby Lake 26 @ 14:30
Referee: Riley Robinson AR1: Brett Hay AR2: Tere Blake
Venue: Brockton Oval
A match that went as predicted. Burnaby a +23 result. The Lakers (16 pts) keep hold of 7th place, while the Rowers (6 pts) drop to 11th. In two weeks the Rowers visit Capilano and Burnaby visit the Ravens.
PREGAME
The Rowers at #10 hosting the #7 Lakers. The Rowers have one win this season and lost big to the Lomas last weekend, Burnaby have two wins, one of them coming against Seattle last week.
Burnaby have only a few changes to the starting XV. David Dinbandhu moves from blindside to #8 and Kini Vunituraga comes off the bench to start at blindside. Darren McCrory starts on the wing instead of Brian Fitzpatrick.
The Rowers, as usual, don’t have their roster available at the time of writing. We’ve posted last week’s roster.
Burnaby currently occupy the last playoff spot and will want to improve on that ranking with CW and Capilano close behind. Prediction: Burnaby by 8.

Seattle 35 v UBCOB Ravens 36 @ 14:30
Referee: Visiting Referee
Venue: Starfire Field
Closer than expected but Seattle at home are always a tougher match. Seattle (8 pts) pick up 2 bonus points and go to 10th place. The Ravens (21 pts) rise to 4th place, still within striking distance of taking a top 2 spot, and a quarter-final bye. On February 28th the Ravens will host Burnaby and Seattle will host the Lomas.
PREGAME
Seattle at #11 host the #6 Ravens. Seattle lost to Burnaby last weekend while the Ravens just got by the Capilanos.
The Ravens have made a lot of changes from last weekend’s match. Only #9 Alex Ball and #13 Noah Bain retain their starting spots. Aaron McLelland is moved from #10 to #15 and Harjun Gill starts at flyhalf. Standout wing Cole Keffer isn’t in the roster and Marceau Bertin takes his spot.
Seattle don’t have their roster at the time of writing so we’ve published last week’s roster. [ed. updated roster]
The Ravens have only lost one match this season and that was a default due to travel issues. They’re still one of the favourites to be in the final. Prediction: Ravens by 10.

Meraloma 17 v Capilano 17@ 14:30
Referee: David Smortchevsky AR1: Visiting Referee 1 AR2: Joel Van Meer
Venue: Connaught Park
A 17-17 draw, another scrappy effort by the Caps. Even though they’re in 9th place (10 pts) they’re making every game a battle. The Lomas drop to second in the table (23 pts) tied with UVic. The Lomas next visit Seattle and the Caps host the Rowers.
PREGAME
The Lomas at #1 host the #9 Capilano. The Lomas handily defeated the Rowers last weekend while a scrappy Caps team lost a close one to the Ravens.
Meraloma are the surprise team of the season, holding the #1 spot. They have a few changes in the forwards and an untouched backline from last weekend. Corne Ludick comes in at hooker, Pat Zuk at tighthead and Fintan O’Sullivan in the second row. John Willis starts at openside.
The Caps are missing their captain and loosehead prop, Neil Courtney, Rich Merinsky takes that spot. Pete Ingoldsby starts at hooker. The only other change in the forwards is veteran Glenn McKinnon getting the start at blindside flanker. A bit of a shuffle in the backline with Cam Waddell moving from wing to inside centre and Johnny Franklin moving from inside to outside centre.
The only loss for the Lomas this season was to the Pacific Pride back in November. They seem one of the on form teams right now, plus they’re at home. Prediction: Lomas by 9.

University Of Victoria 47 v Westshore 13 @ 14:30 [ed. corrected]
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: Leighton Burridge
Venue: Centennial Stadium
An expected result but Westshore led 13-0 at one point then the wheels fell off. The result puts UVic (23 pts) in a tie for second place while Westshore (5 pts) continue to chase their first win. UVic next visit UBC and Westshore hosts CW.
PREGAME
The #5 UVic hosting the #12 Westshore. The Vikes have a big alumni event planned for the evening with Doug Tate and Rick Farrally being honoured for their years of service. The match has been moved to the stadium so a Vikes win is on the script. Can Westshore spoil the party?
The Vikes had a narrow 4 point loss to CW last weekend while Westshore lost -12 to the Bays. UVic have only made minor changes to the starting XV with Taine Clague coming back in to claim the #8 spot moving Brendan Kim to blindside flanker. Shane Rikley-Krindle gets the start at outside centre.
Westshore have one change in the forwards, Nathan Yue comes in to loosehead prop moving Nathan Groenewold to tighthead. Aiden Holland comes into the lineup at outside centre, Alex Mentiply starts on the wing.
Westshore are winless this season but have 5 bonus points over 5 games, their points against is the worst in the league, so defence is an issue. The Vikes at home in front of a stadium crowd with celebrations on tap later in the evening will be pumped. Prediction: Vikes by 12.
