BC Premier Week 14 Results: Westshore Upset by Lomas, Bays Victors at Burnaby, UBC Fall to Ravens, Pride Pummel CW – Women’s Premier Ravens Defeat Seattle, Thunderbirds Soar Past Burnaby, Abby Crushed by CW, Westshore Upset Lomas
Week 14 has wrapped up, the Ravens remain top of the table with Westshore, UBC and Capilano in pursuit. In Women’s Premier some mismatches as UBC hit their title defending form but Lomas still top the table. There were numerous national team and MLR level players in the rosters this week Andrew Coe, Josiah Morra, Reegan O’Gorman, Callum Botchar, Noah Flesch, Mason Flesch, Emerson Prior, Mark Balaski, Guiseppe du Toit and more.

Meraloma 24 v Westshore 21 @ 12:45
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: John Bay AR2: Miriam Sobrino
Venue: Connaught Park
The Lomas with the upset win at home, they get a bonus point win but are officially eliminated from the playoffs as they have 3 games left and at 20 points they can’t catch Burnaby at 36 points even with 3 bonus point wins. Westshore get a bonus point in the loss and precariously hold on to 2nd place with UBC and Capilano closing in. Westshore have 4 matches left in the regular season. Next weekend the Lomas host UBC and Westshore visit CW.
PREGAME
#2 hosting #8. These teams just met two weeks ago at Westshore with a close 29-19 win for the home side. This week the Lomas host.
The Lomas with 3 changes, Tom Webb comes in at loosehead prop, Ben Shaw starts on the wing and Nathan Gallant at fullback.
Westshore have added Emerson Prior to the roster, a big addition to the front row at loosehead prop. Seth Recalma returns to the roster at second row. Mitch Buie gets the start at scrum half, and Mark Balaski returns to start at inside centre moving Rhys James to fullback. The bench is fortified with the return of Alvin Otieno and Avery Oitomen.
The Westshore roster look a bit stronger this match, counter that with the Lomas having home field advantage. If those factors cancel out then I’d expect a similar result. Prediction: Westshore by +7.

Burnaby Lake 16 v James Bay AA 26 @ 14:30
Referee: Bradley Schwalger AR1: Saro Turner AR2: Tere Blake
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
The Bays with a strong travelling roster get the +10 bonus point win, that result puts them in 5th place with 4 matches left. Burnaby drop to 7th place with the loss (2.57 ppm), and no bonus point, behind UVic who move up to 6th place (2.64 ppm) and the final playoff spot. Burnaby have 3 matches left including an important one against UVic. UVic are on tour in Portugal and have 6 matches left. Next weekend UVic visit the Bays and Burnaby have a bye.
PREGAME
#6 hosting #5. Burnaby coming off a loss to Ravens, Bays coming off a win against CW. Burnaby won the matchup in September by +5.
Burnaby have Guiseppe du Toit starting at #10, a flashback to when he was considered the heir apparent to that position for the national team as a young player. Wayne Ngubane returns to his normal scrum half position. Iowane Raturici starts at fullback. In the forwards James Kelly moves back to hooker and Jonah Fridffinson gets the start at openside flanker.
The Bays are fully loaded this week, the strongest roster they’ve put out this season. Mason Flesch on the bench with brother Noah Flesch starting in the centres. Callum Botchar in the second row, there’s no changes to the starting XV that put 61 points on CW last weekend.
It will be interesting to see how Guiseppe du Toit goes at #10 for Burnaby but the Bays have a strong roster, adding Mason Flesch to the reserves says it all. Prediction: Bays by +8.

UBCOB Ravens 33 v UBC RFC 29 @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Phil Webster AR2: Rachel Morrison
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
Another close match between these rivals and it wouldn’t be a surprise to see these two teams in the final again this year. The Ravens with the bonus point win extend their lead as the top team. UBC with 2 bonus points in the loss stay in 3rd but are now tied with Capilano. UBC have 5 matches left, Ravens have 4. Next week UBC visit the Lomas and the Ravens visit Capilano.
PREGAME
#1 hosting #3. These two teams met 2 weeks ago and it was a narrow +1 win for the Ravens at UBC.
The Ravens are loaded, they’ve got Andrew Coe at #10, Josiah Morra on the wing and for good measure have added Reegan O’Gorman to the bench. That’s added to their already strong roster that are on a 4 game winning streak. Riku Konrad returns to the roster as starting hooker, Jake Tierney moves to blindside flanker. Donald Carson returns to the roster to start at second row and Hillyard Carson moves to the reserves.
UBC have their usual Premier roster back after resting a number of starters against the Cal Bears. It’s a similar roster to the one that narrowly lost to the Ravens in January. Graeme Francolini is back at tighthead prop and Liam Kinghorn at blindside flanker. There’s no sign of the McMullin brothers, the last time we saw one of them in the roster was January 23rd, when Talon was on the bench.
Ravens won the first matchup at UBC, now at home with a few additions. Prediction: Ravens by +3.

Castaway Wanderers 17 v Pacific Pride 57 @ 14:45
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: Cole Pedrick AR2: Robert Brown
Venue: Windsor Park
The Pride finally get their first win of the Premier season and do it in style by a +40 margin. The Pride have 2 Premier matches left against UBC and Burnaby. CW sit at the bottom of the table and won’t be participating in post season play this year. CW have 4 matches left starting next weekend against Westshore and then Ravens, UBC, and UVic.
PREGAME
#9 hosting #10. CW with one win this season that was against the Lomas. The Pride coming off a thumping against the visiting Atlantic team, they’ve only managed a draw this season in Premier, that was against the Lomas as well.
CW with a slight change to the front row with Fred Regan coming in as loosehead, Corbin off the bench to hooker and Kratz moves to tighthead. Mike Finnemore missing at #8 so Merlin M’Cloud moves from openside flanker to #8, Wainwright moves to openside and Kehoe comes off the bench to start. The only change in the backline is Jordan Tait is missing and Angus Boyd-Porter comes off the bench to start at inside centre. In the reserves Mateo Quinonez was playing for the Pride earlier in the season, looks like he’s a second row replacement for CW in this match.
The Pride have shaken up the roster a bit from their loss last weekend, a couple of players who were playing for Atlantic are now back in the Pride jersey and starting Justin Tasse at prop and Nate Cameron as flanker. Jordy Auger is hooker and Eric Rutledge who impressed when he subbed on against Atlantic, gets the start at tighthead. Jaiden John comes off the bench to start at second row and gets the captaincy this week. Kyneston gets the start at openside flanker, Taine Clague gets moved from blindside flanker to outside centre. Rogan Moir moves from #9 to #10 and Jean-Louis Desgouttes moves from #10 to inside centre. With Luke Prest starting at fullback it looks like three scrum-halves in the starting XV, Chris Rose, Rogan Moir and Luke Prest. The Pride certainly shaking up the roster looking for some answers.
The weather in Victoria is calling for cloud with a 40% chance of showers. I think the Pride will have the advantage if the weather supports expansive rugby, the Pride have been suspect in defence however, especially against the lineout and maul. We’ll see how much work they’ve done this week with their coach back from the 7s tournament. Prediction: Pride by +5.

Women’s Premier
Burnaby Lake 10 v Vancouver Thunderbirds 73 @ 12:45
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Tere Blake
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
When the Thunderbirds have their 1st team players available they’re definitely contenders for another Premier title. It wasn’t close in the end, a +63 win. They have 22 points from 7 games a 3.14 ppm. Burnaby have 28 points from 9 games, a 3.11 ppm. Burnaby visit Abbotsford next week and UBC have a bye.
PREGAME
#2 hosting #5. The Thunderbirds two time defending champions but their roster strength has been up and down so far this season as the UBC XVs and 7s schedule takes priority.
Burnaby missing their starting #10 Miriama Naiobasali who has been impressive this season. Michelle Veerman takes that role, I believe she’s from TWU. The only other change in the starting XV is Kaila France replacing Mia Chan in the back three.
The Thunderbirds have 10 players in the roster from the UBC championship team, so they’re not full strength yet with the 7s season still with one round left in early March, but they’re almost there. Olivia Sarabura comes in at fullback, she was outstanding for UBC in the last 7s tournament and was named to the tournament dream team. Lana Dueck, another UBC 7s player, gets the start at #10.
Burnaby won the October encounter by +5 but UBC have a stronger roster this time around. Prediction: Thunderbirds by +2.

Meraloma 10 v Westshore 28 @ 14:30
Referee: Justyn Roberts AR1: Sam Klein-Laufer AR2: Jack Webster
Venue: Connaught Park
Westshore with a strong travelling roster were able to reverse the result from last meeting even though on the road. The result gives Westshore 32 points from 9 games, a 3.56 ppm. The Lomas have 30 points from 8 games, a 3.75 ppm so they still narrowly hold on to top spot. Next week Westshore visit CW and the Lomas host the Ravens.
PREGAME
#1 hosting #3. The Lomas won the first match up 2 weeks ago on the road by a comfortable +13.
Westshore have a stronger roster this weekend with the addition of some backline attacking threats like Vanessa Chiapetta at outside centre. The bench looks strong with Kendra Cousineau, Ivy Poetker and Elle Douglas looking to make an impact.
The Lomas have a stable roster and put out the same starting XV as last match with one exception, Jessica Nelson comes off the bench to start at openside flanker moving Helen McGhee to #8.
Should be a great match, Westshore with a slightly stronger roster, Lomas at home, the +13 previous result. Prediction: Lomas by +7.

Abby is finding it difficult going up to Premier and they get another century scored on them. CW have 26 points from 8 games, a 3.25 ppm, good for 3rd place. The BCRU standings will have to be adjusted for exhibition matches against the Ravens so there might be a slight discrepancy with their posted standings and the revised standings. Currently it’s Meraloma, Westshore, CW, UBC, Burnaby occupying the top 5 spots with Seattle a distant 6th. Next weekend CW host Westshore and Abby host Burnaby.
PREGAME
#4 hosting #7. CW looking to be playoff bound, Abby in last place and winless so far this season. They’ve had 370 points scored against them in 5 matches, it shouldn’t be close. Prediction: CW by +20.

UBCOB Ravens 62 v Seattle Rugby 19 @ 11:15
Referee: Rachel Morrison AR1: Nixon Sutherland
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
The Ravens with their first win of the season, again done in style, a +43 win. It’s perhaps a hint of what they can accomplish next season. The Ravens visit the Lomas next weekend, Seattle have a bye.
PREGAME
An exhibition match as the Ravens compete in the 2nd half of the season. Seattle were crushed by 78 points last weekend by CW, Ravens put in a good show against Burnaby losing by 9 but they had six UBC players in the roster which are not listed this week. We haven’t seen the Seattle roster yet. Should be a competitive match with perhaps the Ravens tasting their first win of the season on home soil.
