BC Rugby Weekend of February 7th 2026

BC Premier Week 13 Results: Caps Upset UVic, Burnaby Fall to Ravens, Lomas Lose to Westshore, Bays Clobber CW; Exhibition TWU Trounced by Pride, Cal Bears Maul UBC – Women’s Premier Lomas Defeat Westshore, Seattle Crushed by CW, Burnaby Beat Ravens

It’s getting down to the last third of the season, most teams have 5 games left with 12 played. Burnaby and Lomas only have 4 games left and UVic and UBC have 6 games left. CW and Lomas are effectively eliminated from post season play and only UVic now has a chance to catch the top 6 going to the playoffs. In women’s Premier the Lomas show they’re deserving of the #1 ranking, impressive considering they’ve come up from Div 1 last year. There’s no rugby next weekend, Family Day weekend, but play resumes February 21st.

Men’s Premier

University Of Victoria 21 v Capilano 24 @ 13:45
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Thomas Cooper AR2: David Schmidt-Schweda
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field

It was a day for forwards with the soggy field and slippery handling conditions and the Capilano forwards delivered. They owned the scrums, turning over several key possessions during the game. They owned the lineouts and were tenacious in defence when UVic were camped inside the 5 metres. Kudos to them, especially impressive were the tighthead prop Caleb Hickey and second row Ryan Hickey.  They’re not related, Caleb from Ontario and Ryan from NZ. For the Vikes, their best player was probably Brendan Kim, another forward.  The score was 14-12 Vikes at the half, 2 tries each. In the second half Caps scored first 17-14, Vikes replied 21-17, 3 tries each. Caps got the final try and a bonus point to win 24-21. Vikes get one point in the loss. There’s no rugby next weekend as it’s Family Day weekend, play resumes Feb 21st. Caps remain in 4th place but Vikes slip to 7th. With the Lomas and CW effectively eliminated from post season play after today’s losses, UVic in 7th are the only team who still has a chance to catch the top 6.

PREGAME

#6 hosting #4. Vikes coming off an upset win over Westshore, Caps coming off a loss to the Bays.

The Vikes with Cooper Coats at #10 get a higher pregame ranking, he’s back in the roster this week. Brendan Kim had a monster game last week and is one to watch. The Vikes shuffle their loose forwards a bit with Muiredach Casey missing, Aiden de Wit comes off the bench to start at openside. Sion Griffiths gets the start at scrum half but the backline remains unchanged.

The Caps missing Johnny Franklin, likely to the 7s program travelling to Nairobe for the SVNS 2 tournament next weekend. Mike Moloney still out as well. One change to the forwards with Andrew Crane getting the start at #5. Sam Reimer returns to his normal #9 spot and Kyle Lamb moves from inside centre to #10. Ryan Leskiw comes off the bench to take the inside centre role.

The Vikes are at home and should have a big crowd as their game is a break from the CanWest 7s tournament taking place at the same venue. The Vikes looked good last weekend and the Caps struggled on the road. Prediction: Vikes by +7.

UBCOB Ravens 55 v Burnaby Lake 7 @ 14:30
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Lance Davison AR2: Saro Turner
Venue: Jericho Beach Park

Maybe a little surprising at the size of the win, +48, but Ravens are balanced in the forwards and backs so on a wet day like today, they still function well. Burnaby have an exciting backline with the Fijian player additions but on a wet day and soggy field, those skills get muted. Ravens stay at #1 while Burnaby drop to #6.

PREGAME

#1 hosting #5. The Ravens with a big win at UBC to go top of the table last weekend, Burnaby won on the road at CW to keep pace in the playoff race.

Burnaby have one change in the forwards with Clinton Odhiambo coming off the bench to start at openside flanker. In the backs there’s a bit of a shuffle with Kyle Corrigan coming into the roster at fullback and Kimi Vunituraga coming off the bench to start at outside centre. Iowane Raturici is back in the roster ready to make an impact from the bench.

The Ravens have Lucas Rumball back in the lineup as starting openside, a big plus for them. In the tight five there’s some rotation from the reserves with Josh Tweed and Hillyard Carson getting the start. In the backs some rotations with Jack Carson moving from fullback to #10 and Noah Bain moving from wing to fullback.

The Ravens at home and sitting in top spot go in as favourites, having Lucas Rumball back is a boost. Prediction: Ravens by +8.

Westshore 29 v Meraloma 19 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: David Hale AR2: Al Humphries
Venue: Juan De Fuca

Westshore opened the scoring 17 minutes in with tighthead prop Omar Abu Alnaaj diving over the line. Westshore pushed it out to 12-0 at 30 minutes with another possession inside the Lomas 5 metres, #7 Brian Ndirango crossing the line. The half ended with the score 12-0, Westshore added a penalty in the second half to go 15-0. The Lomas answered back 10 minutes into the second half, #6 Sam Lyon scoring the try from close quarters, 15-7. Westshore were next to score, the first backline try of the match when fullback Drew Belbin, who looked lively all game, found some space and made a backhand pass to winger Johnston Olindi who scored the try, 22-7, with 15 minutes to play. Lomas scored next off a lineout and maul that ended in the referee awarding a penalty try when the maul was collapsed, 22-14. With 5 minutes left and Westshore maintaining possession inside the Lomas 22, reserve scrum half Mitch Buie scored a try when he spied a gap near the ruck and beat a couple of defenders to cross the line, 29-14. The Lomas close out the scoring with another maul, this one crosses the line in the corner, unconverted, final 29-19. Westshore remain in 2nd place. Meraloma remain in 8th but are effectively eliminated from post season play, they sit at 15 points with 4 matches left, the maximum they could reach is 35 points and Burnaby in 6th place already has 36 points.

PREGAME

#2 hosting #8. Westshore missing 5 starters didn’t look good in their loss to UVic, the Lomas earned a draw with the Pride last week.

The Lomas roster looks stable from last week with some rotation from the bench, Tyus Dimbleby starts at #9 and Alex Tagg at openside.

Westshore missing their 7s players, in particular Thomas Isherwood. Mark Balaski still missing, not sure if that means 7s selection or injury or playing offshore. They do have Rhys James back. Also returning two key forwards #8 Joe Kingham and #7 Brian Ndirangu. Avery Oitomen, the MLR level winger, also missing this week.

It’s tough to predict Westshore with a lot of changes in the roster, Isherwood and Balaski key players but they do have 3 starters back who were missing last week. The Lomas with only 2 wins are in 8th place but have a stable lineup. Prediction: Westshore by +2.

Castaway Wanderers 14 v James Bay AA 61 @ 14:45
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Justine Blatt-Janmaat AR2: Robert Brown
Venue: Windsor Park

The Bays with a huge +47 win over their cross town rivals. If the Bays can keep some of their marquee players around like Callum Botchar, Noah Flesch, Kainoa Lloyd they’ll be a force in the playoffs. Botchar signed with the Seattle Seawolves so it will be interesting to see how long he stays in the BC Premier. The Bays actually overtake two teams with this result on the ppm (points per match), they now sit in 5th place. CW are effectively eliminated from playoff contention, with 5 games left and at 11 points, even if they got the maximum 25 points from their remaining matches that would give them 36 points which is where the 6th place team Burnaby currently sit.

PREGAME

#9 hosting #7. Always a fierce rivalry between these teams. CW losing to Burnaby last week, the Bays an upset win over Capilano.

CW rotate their roster as they look for a winning combination. Jack Wallace moves from openside to hooker, Roman Cao comes off the bench to start at tighthead prop. Mike Finnemore moves from second row to #8 and Nat Dring and Marcello Wainwright come off the bench to starting roles in the pack. A late addition, Jake Ilnicki, returns to action as an impact player, the 33 year old prop with 36 Canada caps, we haven’t seen him in the CW roster since 2023.

The Bays are fully loaded this week, not only does Callum Botchar remain they have Noah Flesch, James Thiel and Mostyn Findlay returning, possibly at the 7s camp last weekend. One interesting twist they have big Mike Nieuhuysen playing blindside flanker, Mike has played most backline positions and even #10 but we haven’t noticed him playing loose forward before.

The Bays coming off a big win, fully loaded, they go in as favourites. Prediction: Bays by +8.

Exhibition

Pacific Pride 62 v Trinity Western University 7 @ 15:30
Referee: Andrew Owen
Venue: Starlight Stadium

A good win for the Pride restoring some confidence, it’s the most points they’ve scored in a while and kept TWU to one try. TWU with work to do before the university championships in the fall. The Pride will host the visiting Atlantic Privateers next weekend in one of the few games taking place on the Family Day weekend.

Match video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tSTMSVcOX3s

PREGAME

The Pride putting out a team missing a few starters like Jamin Hodgkins and Justin Tasse. A first appearance for Matteo Quinonez on the bench.

TWU with a few new names from the last roster we recorded from October during the university qualification series.

It should be a close match, the Pride looking for a win to boost confidence. TWU didn’t qualify for the 2025 University championships but are hosting in 2026 so will be looking to build towards that.

The Pride are wearing jerseys that will be auctioned after the match online, the proceeds going to the Thunder Indigenous rugby youth program. The auction link is here.

UBC  7 v California Golden Bears 38 @ 12:00
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: Pierre Iachetti AR2: John Hight
Venue: UBC Thunderbird Stadium

UBC dominated by Cal Bears, even though UBC were missing a few key players it may be an indication that the UBC program is slipping a bit compared to American universities and even compared to universities in Quebec and Ontario based on results the last two years at the university championships.

PREGAME

The preliminary roster we’ve seen from UBC seems to indicate they’re resting a few key starters. No sign of Relmu Wilson-Valdes, Cody Nhanala, or the McMullin brothers. We’re not sure if the Cal Bears are sending their #1 squad but if it is, then based on the UBC  loss to Life University, the Cal team would go in as favourites.

Women’s Premier

Westshore 21 v Meraloma 34 @ 12:45
Referee: Juan Pablo Rey AR2: Al Humphries
Venue: Juan De Fuca

The Lomas clearly the better team with the rosters fielded today. Both the Thunderbirds and Westshore have access to top level talent but when those players are missing, the playing strength adjusts accordingly. The Meraloma program have a consistent roster and get consistent results. They sit top of the table with 30 points from 7 matches, a 4.29 ppm. Westshore drop to 3rd with a 3.38 ppm.

PREGAME

#2 hosting #1. An interesting matchup between the top two teams in the table. The Lomas have played one less match but are ahead on Points per Match (ppm).

Westshore missing a couple of key backline players who are playing in the CanWest 7s this weekend, Vanessa Chiappetta and Cypress des Ormeaux Schmidt. In the forwards they have Chelsey Minter back at prop and both of the Sims sisters this week. Abby Hall returns to the roster as starting #9 and Maya Addai on the wing.

Meraloma have only one change in the forwards with Nat MacMillan starting the second row. In the backline they rotate some players from the reserves and move some starters around, Flora Poole moves from #10 to inside centre and Sara Hernandez moves from wing to #10.

A tough one to call with two top of the table teams. The Lomas impressed in their win over two time champions Thunderbirds in November. Westshore missing a couple of starting backline players. Prediction: Lomas by +1.

Note: Westshore have a fundraiser player auction, who will score 1st and last try, 50% proceeds to support team, 50% to winning bids. Link is here.

UBCOB Ravens 10 v Burnaby Lake 19 @ 12:45
Referee: Miriam Sobrino AR1: Saro Turner AR2: Lauren Hancock
Venue: Jericho Beach Park

The Ravens with the addition of Thunderbird players keep in close. Burnaby showing 28 points from 8 games, a 3.5 ppm but it looks like the BCRU are adjusting the standings midweek that relate to the Ravens exhibition status, so we’ll check back midweek to see the real time standings. The top 5 teams Lomas, Burnaby, Westshore, Thunderbirds, CW all look like they are competitive and capable of winning a match on any particular day.

PREGAME

The Ravens games are supposed to be exhibition since they defaulted the fall games but they’re still showing up in the Win/Loss column on the BCRU standings, not sure how that works. Last week they borrowed some Div 1 players from JBAA and this week it looks like they have a number of Thunderbird players in the roster.

The Ravens with a number of changes S Fong, M Thran, M Leung, C Taylor, S Oreskovich, M Lindsay possibly loaned or graduated Thunderbird players.

Burnaby with a stable forward pack, Ada Okonkwo moves from prop to #8 and Lauren Tagg comes off the bench to start at loosehead prop. Natasha Lalonde starts at scrum half and Mia Chan on the wing the only changes in the backline.

Both teams seem to be short on the bench, with a number of possible Thunderbirds on the Ravens team it makes it difficult to estimate their playing strength. Burnaby should prevail. Prediction: Burnaby by +3.

Castaway Wanderers 85 v Seattle Rugby 7 @ 13:00
Referee: Justine Blatt-Janmaat AR1: Martin Thornton AR2: Chris Horsley
Venue: Windsor Park

A +78 win for the home team. Seattle are likely to make the playoffs as the 6th team but are a level below the top 5. CW show up in 4th place in the BCRU standings with a 3.0 ppm.

PREGAME

#5 hosting #6. CW coming off a loss to Burnaby on the road, Seattle coming off a big loss to Westshore.

CW with a couple of changes in the forwards, Jess Beaudry starts at hooker and Marina Skakun comes in at second row. In the backs Bella Anderton-Teasdale returns to #10 and Emily Currey moves to fullback. UVic assistant coach Chanelle Edwards-Challenger is in the reserves.

Seattle travelling with a full 23 player roster this weekend. Jess Berg comes into the roster at #7. The halfbacks remain the same but a new look backline with only #12 Kendra Young retaining her spot from last week.

Based on current form, CW at home will be clear favourites. Prediction: CW by +9.
