BC Rugby Premier Results: Caps Upset CW; Bays Beat Lomas; UBC Triple Vikes; Pride Paddle Rowers; Burnaby Edge Westshore
Our prediction record took a hit this weekend, only going 3 for 5, and putting our season record at 25 out of 29. We went from 92% accuracy to 86%. The Bays’ grizzly decided to roar and they notched their first win over the visiting Lomas, also Caps pounded the undefeated CW team. First Bays win and first CW loss, who would have guessed?
PREGAME
We’re at the Westshore 7s youth tournament on Friday so won’t have time to do our normal prediction article with rosters. We’ll update the article with rosters on Friday evening.
We got a bit of stick on our UBC v Pride prediction last week, but our accuracy is still 92%, 22 out of 24 this season with only 2 Pride results (a win over UVic and a loss to UBC) sending us the wrong way.
We’ll make our predictions this week without all the rosters available.

I hate to keep belabouring this point but CW without Grady Bowd aren’t the same team. Also our man at the Caps tells us the Caps #10, Jeremy Simon, may be the best #10 in the league. Originally from France he’s possibly been in Canada long enough to be Canada eligible.
Certainly the undefeated CW team received a thumping today and a wake up call. The Caps proved their home win against the Pride was no fluke.
The Caps move to 5th place with a 3-2 record, CW are 3rd at 5-1. Both teams have a bye next weekend.
PREGAME
CW look the real deal, undefeated this season at 5-0. Will Grady Bowd be in the roster, that’s an important factor as it ups CW’s performance. Regardless they’ve won two matches without him, although against lower ranked teams.
Caps are a tough match, especially at home, they took down the Pride but the Pride are a team prone to being overpowered in the forwards, CW aren’t. Caps are 2-2.
Prediction: CW by 7.

James Bay 42 v Meraloma 22 @ 14:30
Referee: CLINT LEMKUS Referee 2: David Hale
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park
The first win for the Bays, we didn’t see it coming and would look forward to reading the match report. The win gives the Bays 9th place and the last playoff spot, the loss drops the Lomas to 10th and out of the playoffs. Although that’s based on win percentage, the Bays have a game in hand but Lomas have 7 points to the Bays 6 points.
There’s 3 weeks left in the regular season.
Next week the Bays visit Burnaby, the Lomas have a bye.
PREGAME
The Lomas are 1-4 but their differential over 5 games is -51 compared to JBAA -156. They only lost to Caps by 3 and to the Ravens, one of the top teams in the league, by 21.
The Bays are 0-4 and have had some blowout losses including a 89-0 loss to UBC. They did put in a better performance at home last week against CW so are improving every week.

University Of Victoria 17 v UBC 54 @ 14:30
Referee: David Smortchevsky Referee 2: Anthony Forth
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field
No surprise in this result, UBC and Ravens remain the two undefeated teams in the league. Another finals rematch perhaps.
UBC are top of the league at 5-0, UVic are in 8th at 1-4.
Next week UBC visit the Ravens, the game of the season perhaps, that’s going to be difficult to predict. UVic host the Rowers.
PREGAME
UBC crushed the Pacific Pride last week, they did it with a dominant forward pack. It will be Carson v Carson with UBC’s four Carsons against UVic’s one. UBC when motivated are a tough team to beat as they showed last week. They are one of the 3 undefeated teams so far this season at 4-0.
UVic are 1-3, their only win was over the last place Westshore team. They did play the Ravens close, a lot will depend on their roster. It’s unlikely they’ll have the 7s players, Josh Thiel and Brennig Prevost in their roster but we’ll wait and see on that.

Vancouver Rowing Club 27 v Pacific Pride 40 @ 14:30
Referee: Bradley Schwalger Referee 2: James Kelly
Venue: Brockton Oval
The thumping from UBC last week perhaps gave the Pride the wake up call they needed. A +13 win for them.
The Pride are in 4th place at 4-2, the Rowers are 7th at 2-3.
Next week the Pride have a bye while the Rowers visit UVic.
PREGAME
Pride were comprehensivly beaten, both on the scoreboard and physically, by UBC last week. A little worrying for the national academy side. They’re 3-2 now. They need this win to retain some credibility.
The Rowers are playing decent rugby, they held UBC to a credible -11 differential, much better than the Pride result. They’re 2-2, this could be a close match. Before the season the prediction would be Pride by a lot, but now it’s nervous times backing the Pride. Still they have to be at least the fourth best team in the league, right?

Westshore 24 v Burnaby Lake 36 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton Referee 2: Michael Moss
Venue: Juan De Fuca
We did get one result spot on, we called a +12 Burnaby result and so it was. Westshore, to their credit, kept coming back even though down early and made the game competitive.
Burnaby are in 6th place at 3-2, Westshore remain in the cellar, the only team without a win. Next week Burnaby host James Bay, Westshore have a bye.
PREGAME
Burnaby are 2-2 and are probably disappointed by their results to date, but their two defeats have been to top teams, CW and Ravens. They’re still a team to be reckoned with by the time the playoffs begin.
Westshore are bottom of the table, they don’t have much depth, and one of their players received a red last match. They perked up when they had 7s player Thomas Isherwood slotting in at #10, but it’s unlikely he’ll be available.
Prediction: Burnaby by 12.
