UVic Vikes 26 @ Burnaby Lake 27 – Burnaby Lake

A lot closer than I expected and a positive showing by the Vikes. The last score I saw was 27-5 for Burnaby and they looked like they were going to put a whoopin on the visitors. Vikes finished with a flurry and scored three times to gain two bonus points. If the Vikes can figure out how to bottle that last 20 minutes there still could be playoff hopes for the program that hasn’t won since November. It doesn’t get easier for them however as next weekend they have two teams entered into the University 7s PLUS a game against James Bay. Burnaby will be worrying about how they lost their focus in a game that looked a comfortable win. Look forward to the match report on this one.

PREGAME
The Vikes haven’t won a game since November 23rd and it doesn’t get easier with a trip to league leading Burnaby. These teams met two weeks ago at UVic with Burnaby prevailing 35-13. If the Vikes lose this one they will lose sole possession of 4th place and the final playoff berth. With the Canada U20 team getting ready for their April Junior World Trophy tournament and taking with them a number of Vikes, it’s not a pretty picture for the University side. If they don’t win this game I’m getting ready to count them out of the playoff race. The problem is they don’t have the iconic senior forward that has been there in the good years. Someone like Pat Riordan for example to stiffen up the forward pack. They have plenty of youth and pace in the backs. Burnaby are a machine, except for the stumble against the forward oriented Capilano team. They keep winning, good rugby, solid lineup 1 through 15. They should control the game through the forwards and come out on top. Prediction: Burnaby by 8.

Vancouver Rowing Club 8 @ Castaway Wanderers 44 – Windsor Park

Most people will be surprised by the size of the victory but not the victory itself. CW keep adding national team players to the roster and keep getting stronger, the latest addition is Chauncey O’Toole who is getting back in shape to make a run at a spot on the national 7s and XVs squad after being on sabbatical for a while. CW now have a firm hold of 5th place and trail UVic by one point for the last playoff spot. An epic matchup coming next weekend when the new and improved, fortified with national team players, CW squad travels to league leading Burnaby. I’m not sure who to pick in that one, depends entirely on the CW roster on the day. Ciaran Hearn is playing very well and contributed 24 points to CW’s tally. The Rowers likely won’t be in contention for a playoff spot but still are well clear of the relegation zone. They host Capilano next weekend and if they could pull off the upset, there might still be hope of taking fourth.

PREGAME
This is a game with a lot at stake. The winner will likely tie the Vikes for 4th spot and will be my pick to claim the final playoff spot, with the Ravens still in the hunt. If CW can put together the same tight five they had against the Bays: Tiedemann, Ilnicki, Buydens, Phelan, Braddock then I give them the edge. If they’re missing a player or two from that combination, it’s a game changer. You know that saying, it’s not so much what you know but who you know, well in this case it’s not so much how you play but who you play. The Rowers have had a very good season, kudos to them regardless of whether they make the playoffs, if they do, an amazing accomplishment. They’ve turned their program around over the last few years and are staying up in the Premiership for sure. I’ll have to assume CW are keeping their lineup from last weekend so… Prediction: CW by 7.

James Bay 33 @ UBCOB Ravens 19 – Jericho Park

Not quite as emphatic a win as last meeting but considering it was a road victory and a bonus point, it’s everything the Bays needed. They retain that important 2nd place position that secures a home semi-final. They face a weakened UVic squad next weekend that has players committed to the University 7s tournament. The Ravens are still in the hunt for a playoff spot and face the winless Lomas next weekend, so an opportunity to move up from their 6th spot.

PREGAME
These teams met 2 weeks ago and the Bays had their way with the Ravens 41-5. That was with the Yanks in the lineup, two big forwards who helped maul over 5 tries. Not sure if they’re back for this game, it’s a game changer. Without the beef in the forwards the Bays were exposed last weekend when they met CW who had all the Canadian beef. The Ravens are a pretty good team, they may even have Conor Trainor back in the lineup, wait and see on that one. The Bays’ backs must be smarting from the game last weekend, they have the talent but didn’t click. If they get some go forward ball they could be devastating. Lineup just in and the Yanks are there so that just improved the JBAA rating. Another chance for Pat Parfrey to find his groove at #10, I actually didn’t notice him last weekend in the CW match, so wondering whether he started or just had a real quiet game. This might be similar to the game two weeks ago. Prediction Bays by 12.

Meraloma 0 @ Capilano 22 – Klahanie Park

The Caps strong defensive game came to the fore again as they shut down the Lomas on attack. Caps maintain their 3rd spot and are within striking distance of the Bays, should they falter. The Lomas are now winless in 9 games, 13 points behind the Rowers with only 5 weekends left. The Caps face the Rowers next weekend while the Lomas take on the Ravens.

PREGAME
I think the Lomas are playing for pride now, not sure if there are enough potential upsets left in the schedule for them to avoid relegation. The Caps have all the motivation to keep winning to secure their 3rd place standing and potentially a trip to the Island to face JBAA in the semis. A little early to think of playoff matchups perhaps but a 4th place finish and cross town trip to Burnaby to face a team they’ve beaten already may suit them better. We’ll see how that plays out but for today, this should be a secure home field victory. Their big centre unit Adam Zaruba is out with a shoulder injury but they have plenty of depth in their club to fill the spot. Prediction: Caps by 14.

AROUND THE LEAGUE

On the Island the two top teams Cowichan and Velox battled to a 12 all draw. Cowichan looked a little more dangerous on attack and had a couple of late chances to win the game with the boot but failed. These two teams will likely battle it out for the Island title in April. The Velox Academy picked up their first win of the season with a comprehensive 84-0 win over Comox. Nanaimo defeated Port Alberni to take over 3rd spot in the Island league.

On the mainland, Seattle again proved they are a contender for the Div 1 title this year as they won comfortably over 3rd place Richmond, 46-12.

In Women’s Premier Burnaby and Velox again verified their 1-2 ranking and remain undefeated. Burnaby destroying Bayside 102-0 and Velox hammering Seattle 65-13.

PREGAME
In Div 1 a big Island clash to determine first place as Cowichan travels to Velox. John James has written up more on that in a separate article. On the Mainland there have been so many cancellations in recent weeks, hopefully a full slate of games will get off this week. Top placed UBC aren’t in action but the 2nd and 3rd place teams face off in Seattle with Richmond making the trip south. Seattle had 6 players at the USA Eagles camp so their performance depends a lot on whether they are back on Saturday. If Richmond lose then Bayside may take over 3rd spot, the last playoff spot, as they host Kamloops.

In women’s Premier Velox host Seattle, one of three games at Velox that day. Burnaby host Bayside and hope to keep their unbeaten record intact. Caps visit SFU and Abby visits United.
