BC Premier Week 16 Results: Pride Fall to Burnaby, UBC Soar Past Capilano, Meraloma Humbled by Vikes, Westshore Dominate Bays, CW @ Ravens Cancelled – Women’s Premier Thunderbirds Fall to Meraloma; CW Pummel Ravens
It’s Week 16 with most teams just having two more matches after this weekend, the exception UVic who will have three more matches. CW defaulted/conceded their match to Ravens due to injuries. We’ll see how the BCRU classifies this as it determines how many points are awarded to the Ravens, at the present it just says the match is “Cancelled”. UBC, Burnaby, UVic, Westshore were all winners this weekend. UBC and Westshore remained tied for 2nd/3rd behind Ravens. Burnaby and UVic continue battle for final playoff spot with head to head matchup next weekend.
UBC RFC 40 v Capilano 26 @ 14:30
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: Trevor Honey AR2: Tyler DAWSON
Venue: Klahanie Park
A +14 win for UBC puts them in sole possession of 2nd place pending the Westshore v JBAA result this evening. Westshore needs a bonus point win to remain tied for 2nd place. Capilano with the loss remain just 5 points ahead of JBAA in 4th. A bonus point win by the Bays this evening could see them tied for 4th. Lots to play for this evening. Next week Caps host the Bays and UBC visit CW.
PREGAME
#2/3 vs #4. UBC tied for 2nd/3rd with Westshore, Caps sitting just behind in 4th place. Capilano could leap past UBC with a win, lots of playoff implications in this match as #1 and #2 get quarter-final byes and #3 and #4 get home quarter-finals.
Caps have a stable roster, no changes in their starting XV. They’re 2-2 in their last 4 matches, they just got by UVic in their last match.
UBC are also 2-2 in their last 4 matches but 2 of those losses were to #1 Ravens. They obliterated the Pride last week. They have Cody Nhanala back at #8 and Joe McNulty back in the second row which moves Liam Kinghorn to flanker. There’s no change to the backline from last week.
UBC have gone to a 6/2 bench anticipating a forwards battle, UBC have too much talent out wide and even though the match is being played at Klahanie now, the Thunderbirds go in as favourites. Prediction: UBC by 6.

Referee: Justine Blatt-Janmaat AR1: James Roszel AR2: David Schmidt-Schweda
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field
A massive win by the Vikes keeps them in the hunt for the playoffs. Since Burnaby also won the Vikes remain 5 points adrift but have a game in hand. The game next weekend, Burnaby @ UVic, will be massive and a must win for UVic if they want to see postseason play. The Lomas have a bye next week.
PREGAME
#7 hosting #8. UVic are still in with a chance to make the post-season, they have a game in hand on Burnaby and are only 4 points behind. They need this win. The Lomas are out of the playoff race.
UVic have a few changes in the forwards, Ronin Smith comes off the bench to start second row, Robert Reid also rotates off the bench to start at blindside flanker. Jaxson Jones moves to openside flanker. The backline remains unchanged with the exception of fullback where Michael Oughtred gets the start. The big news is the return of Canada 7s player David Richard to the bench, he’s apparently been recuperating and is now ready to play some limited minutes.
The Lomas have Malachi Te Rore-King back in the centres but missing a couple of forwards Conor O’Brien and Elliot Ogbemudia.
Vikes go in as favourites, at home, needing the win. Prediction: Vikes by +8.

Burnaby Lake 50 v Pacific Pride 31 @ 14:30
Referee: Kristine Lovatt AR1: Jeff Lorz AR2: JT ZHANG
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
An important bonus point win for Burnaby as they stay ahead of UVic in the battle for the last playoff spot. Next weekend they visit UVic for what may be the decider. The Pride are done for the BC Premier season, we’ll see what exhibition matches they have lined up for the spring.
PREGAME
#6 vs #9. The Pride were crushed by UBC last week, their head coach is away, and they’re the only team without a published roster at the time of writing. None of these are good signs. Burnaby haven’t played a game since Feb 21st and are coming off losses to a revitalized JBAA and #1 Ravens.
Burnaby have Napolioni Bolaca back in the lineup at #10, the Fijian star last played in December and then returned to Fiji for the Coral Coast 7s. That’s a big boost for them. It looks like he brought back a friend, Suliano Volivoli, a veteran Fiji 7 player who is starting at outside centre. It’s a potent looking backline. There’s some rotation in the forwards with Cooper Johnston returning at second row, James Kelly moves from hooker to blindside flanker, Jarod Byrnes moves from #8 to openside flanker and Taitusi Vikilani starts at #8.
We’ll post the Pride roster when it’s available. It was posted Saturday morning, and included below.
Burnaby with some Fijian 7s talent returning should be hitting their form just in time for the playoff run. They’re motivated to keep ahead of UVic and claim that last playoff spot. This is the last Premier match for the Pride this season, not sure what to expect. Prediction: Burnaby by +7.

Westshore 59 v James Bay AA 14 @ 19:00
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: David Hale AR2: Robert Brown
Venue: Starlight Stadium
An emphatic +45 win for Westshore as they keep pace with UBC in the battle for 2nd place. They also win the Barnard Cup for top Premier team on the Island this season. Next weekend Westshore host the Ravens and the Bays visit Capilano.
PREGAME
#2/3 hosting #5. Westshore 2-2 in their last 4 matches, the Bays on a 4 game win streak.
The Bays have been bolstered by the return of some national level players like Callum Botchar, Noah Flesch, James Thiel, Kainoa Lloyd and have a four game win streak to show for it. It’s bad news/good news for them, Noah Flesch and James Thiel have joined Penarol in Uruguay, Callum Botchar is with the Seattle Seawolves in South Africa and Kainoa Lloyd is not available this week. However they have added D’Shawn Bowen and Austin Creighton this week. Mike Nieuhuysen moves to #8 and Alex Jordan from #8 to second row. Austin Creighton starts at blindside flanker. Mostyn Findlay moves from the wing to take Noah Flesch place in the centres and Malik James comes off the bench to replace James Thiel at outside centre.
Westshore are missing Foster Dewitt who has also gone to Penarol in Uruguay. Daragh Carroll comes off the bench to start at hooker. Brian Ndirangu moves from flanker to second row and Thomas Heuser starts at openside. Veteran Admir Cejvanovic again starts at #8 setting up a mighty battle of top level veterans at the base of the scrum. The high octane backline remains unchanged led by #10 Mark Balaski. Porter Gook has moved over from the Pride and is reserve hooker, Alvin “the Buffalo” Otieno is also in the reserves.
This is going to be a tough one to choose, the Bays might have the edge in the forwards, Westshore might have an edge in the backs. The match is being played at Starlight Stadium on Saturday evening. We’ll go with the higher ranked team for this one. Prediction: Westshore by +2.

GAME CANCELLED – CW have forfeited the match due to injuries. We’ll see how the game is classified by the BCRU in terms of points, the Rules of Competition state, “”A conceded Match shall count as four points and recorded as a 20-0 score, as if the non-conceding Team scored no more than three tries. A defaulted Match shall count as five points and recorded as a 20-0 score, as if the non-defaulting Team scored four non-converted tries.” So far the BCRU just have the match labelled as “Cancelled”.

Women’s Premier
Meraloma 29 v Vancouver Thunderbirds 19 @ 11:15
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: John Hight AR2: Lauren Hancock
Venue: Brockton Oval
A +10 win for the Lomas as they remain top of the table, at 3.89 points per match. The Thunderbirds drop to a 2.75 ppm, behind Westshore 3.7, Burnaby 3.22, CW 3.11. Thunderbirds visit CW next weekend, Meraloma have a bye.
PREGAME
Potentially the top 2 teams in the competition, although Westshore may have something to say about that. If you’re going to beat the Thunderbirds, now is the time with the Canada U21 team in Ireland with a number of UBC players. The Lomas are top of the table in points per match, the Thunderbirds defending Premier champions. The fact the Thunderbirds are missing key players to the Canada U21 tour and Lomas won the first match at UBC makes me think the Lomas go in as favourites. Prediction: Lomas by +3.
Note: The match has been moved to Brockton Oval.

As expected a substantial win by CW in this exhibition match. CW host Thunderbirds next week.
PREGAME
An exhibition match but I’m expecting CW to win by a substantial margin. The Ravens have had the benefit of some of the Thunderbird players in previous weeks to bolster the roster but the Thunderbirds have a match this weekend. CW look fully loaded with plenty of subs. Prediction: CW by +15.

Burnaby Lake v Abbotsford RFC @ 12:45
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
The fact the BCRU haven’t assigned a referee and Burnaby haven’t posted a roster make me wonder if this match is still on, but it’s not flagged by the BCRU. Also Abbotsford have posted their women’s team is heading to Kamloops for an exhibition match. I’m guessing this match isn’t on, wonderful that the BCRU are right on top of it. We’ll see if the standings are impacted at all, Abby out of playoff contention but Burnaby could use the points.
UPDATE: Apparently Abbotsford dropped out of the league midway through the season, we didn’t see any announcement.
