BC Premier Week 17 Results: Ravens Edge Westshore, JBAA Pummel Capilano, Burnaby Defeated by UVic, UBC Overwhelm CW – Women’s Premier Thunderbirds Fly Past CW
Week 17 wrapped up and there’s one weekend left in the regular season. The Ravens look certain to finish top of the table and UBC 2nd. Westshore have a lock on 3rd while Caps and Bays are still in a battle for 4th/5th and home field in a possible rematch. Vikes and Burnaby now tied in 6th/7th but Vikes have one extra make-up match weekend. Lots to be decided after the Easter break. In women’s Premier the Thunderbirds are hitting their stride as the playoffs loom and they look to defend their title.

Westshore 17 v UBCOB Ravens 22 @ 14:15
Referee: Kristine Lovatt AR1: James Roszel AR2: Martin Thornton
Venue: Juan De Fuca
The match was tied at 12-12 at the half, Ravens went ahead 22-12 with Westshore scoring a late try to salvage a bonus point in the loss. Ravens at 68 points are top of the standings and 5 points clear of UBC in second with one match remaining. It looks like Westshore will finish the season in 3rd and host a quarter-final, possibly against UVic or Burnaby. The Ravens visit the Vikes for their last match and Westshore visit the Caps to end the regular season.
PREGAME
#2/3 hosting #1. A Ravens win will capture #1 ranking for the season going into the playoffs. A Westshore win will keep them in the race for the 2nd/3rd place race with UBC. The top two teams get a quarter-final bye and a home semi-final.
Westshore have veteran hooker Matt Evans back, their scrum was under pressure a lot last weekend against the Bays and the Ravens won’t be any easier. Joe Kingham moves to second row to add some power to the engine room, Brian Ndirangu moves to blindside flanker. With Taylor McGuire injured Rhys James moves to fullback and Payton Gibson moves to outside centre. Taine Clague comes over from the Pride (P) as their season is over. His dad coaches at Westshore and he and his dad played at Westshore (Velox). He’ll likely come into the loose forwards or centres in the second half.
The Ravens are missing Joe Locke the openside flanker as he’s with the Atlantic Privateers out east, so they’ve rotated the loose forwards a bit with David O’Donaghue getting the start at openside. Andrew Coe isn’t available so Jack Carson moves to #10 and Billy Wickham takes the #9 spot. Mark Wandeto and Ethan Berry return to the backline and Reegan O’Gorman is in the reserves to make an impact later in the match.
The Ravens haven’t lost a match since December, seven wins in a row. Westshore are 5-2 in that same time period. It should be a good match, Westshore backline are one of the best in the league but the Ravens likely have the edge in the forwards and set pieces. Prediction: Ravens by +2.

Capilano 24 v James Bay AA 64 @ 14:30
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: Jack Webster AR2: Phil Webster
Venue: Klahanie Park
Maybe not surprising the Bays won but the margin of victory, +40, is a surprise. The Bays go from losing by -45 one week to winning by +40 the next. A difficult team to predict. Caps lose two in a row with the playoffs looming. After the break the Bays host UBC and the Caps host Westshore. Caps remain in 4th with 51 points and the Bays have 50 points in 5th. It’s looking possible these two will meet in the 4th v 5th quarter-finals. The home venue to be decided by the results on April 11th.
PREGAME
#4 hosting #5. Two closely matched teams, Caps are 4-3 since December, the Bays are 5-2 but have lost some key talent lately and lost big to Westshore last weekend.
Capilano are missing Payton Teneycke this week, that brings Pat Zuk off the bench and moves Caleb Hickey to tighthead prop. Ryan Hickey missing from the second row so Riley Canning comes off the bench. Sam Reimer not in the roster and Toby Horn moves from fullback to scrum half. Veteran Chris Robinson backs up the scrum half position.
The Bays missing a few players, Austin Creighton is with the Atlantic Privateers out east. D’Shawn Bowen isn’t in the roster this week but they’ve added three Pride (P) players, Jack Part, Eric Rutledge and Mason MacDonald.
It’s a toss up in deciding this one, both teams missing players, close in the standings but Caps at home get the nod. Prediction: Caps by +3.

Castaway Wanderers 14 v UBC 46 @ 14:30
Referee: Justine Blatt-Janmaat AR1: David Hale AR2: Chris Horsley
Venue: Windsor Park
An expected result and UBC move into sole possession of 2nd place and a quarter-final bye. After the break UBC will wrap up the regular season with a visit to James Bay, CW will host the Vikes.
PREGAME
#10 hosting #2/3. CW couldn’t get enough healthy players last week for a road trip so defaulted their match, this time they’re at home but facing the on form UBC team.
UBC forward pack looks stable, only one change at loosehead prop, Ethan Samuels getting the start. They’re trying out a new combination at halfbacks, with Ronan Graham and Ben Martin but are keeping the first string, Stephen Webb and Liam James, on the bench in case things go pear shaped. Milo Knights gets the start on the wing coming fresh into the roster. Late change Max Birtley starts at #8 and Cody Nhanala covers from the bench.
CW have two players from the Pride (P) who immediately go into the starting roster, Theo Espagnol at loosehead prop and Jaiden John at second row. Mike Finnemore returns to the roster at #8, Merlin M’Cloud is with the Atlantic Privateers out east. Chris Gamage returns to the roster at scrum-half.
UBC motivated to take possession of 2nd place and get a bonus point win. Prediction: UBC by +12.

University Of Victoria 47 v Burnaby Lake 36 @ 14:45
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Sam Klein-Laufer AR2: John J De Goede
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field
An exciting high scoring match with the Vikes coming away with a +11 win. With the Vikes getting a 5 point bonus win and Burnaby getting a bonus point in the loss, it means the teams are tied at 42 points but the Vikes have a game in hand. After the Easter break it will be Burnaby hosting Meraloma and Vikes hosting CW, both teams likely to get bonus point wins. That leaves the final make-up weekend where Vikes host the Ravens.
PREGAME
#7 hosting #6. Perhaps the key match of the weekend to determine who continues to post season play. Both teams likely to win next weekend against Lomas (Burnaby) and CW (UVic), and then UVic have one match left in the final make-up weekend against #1 Ravens. So if UVic lose this weekend, they could be done. If UVic win, then depending on bonus points, they could be tied.
UVic only making one change to the starting XV that pummelled the Lomas in the last match. David Richard starts on the wing. It’s a potent backline with the likes of Cooper Coats, David Richard, Michael Oughtred.
Burnaby only make a few changes from their team that beat the Pride last weekend. James Kelly moves from blindside flanker to hooker and Jonah Fridffinson moves to blindside flanker. Andrew McIntyre comes off the bench to start in the second row. Jack Brady gets the start on the wing.
Two strong backline squads, Canadian talent for UVic and Fijian talent for Burnaby. The Burnaby forwards may have a bit more beef, it will be interesting to watch the battle in the scrums. Burnaby won the first matchup by +9 in Burnaby, split the difference for a change in home ground. Prediction: Burnaby by +4.

Women’s Premier
With Abbotsford now out of the league there are only 6 teams in the league so they’ve changed the playoff structure, it will be #4 v #5 in the quarter-finals, the winner to play #1 in the semis. It will be #2 v #3 in the other semi. It looks like Seattle will finish #6 and be out of the playoffs. Currently based on the BCRU standings and the points per match, this is what it looks like from 1 to 5, Lomas 3.89 points per match, Westshore 3.7, Burnaby 3.22, CW 3.11, Thunderbirds 2.75 ppm. Only CW and Thunderbirds will change their points per match this weekend.
Castaway Wanderers 7 v Vancouver Thunderbirds 24 @ 12:45
Referee: Julianne Zussman AR1: David Hale AR2: Al Humphries
Venue: Windsor Park
The Thunderbirds starting to hit their form just at the right time with the playoffs looming. When they get their Canada U21 players back they’ll be difficult to defeat. The BCRU have amended the standings table, currently the Lomas are 3.89, Westshore 3.7, Burnaby 3.4, Thunderbirds 3.0, CW 2.8. There’s one week of regular season left with Burnaby hosting Lomas and Thunderbirds hosting Westshore. If Thunderbirds defeat Westshore with a bonus point and Burnaby lose to the Lomas then they’ll move past Burnaby into 3rd setting up a Burnaby v CW 4th/5th. The winner to face the Lomas and Westshore hosting the Thunderbirds in 2nd v 3rd matchup. If Westshore defeat the Thunderbirds then it will be Thunderbirds v CW in 4th/5th and the semis would be Westshore v Burnaby and the Lomas vs Thunderbirds/CW winner. We’ll find out the playoff picture on April 11th..
PREGAME
#4 hosting #5. Thunderbirds coming off a loss to Meraloma and CW coming off a loss to Westshore in their last league match.
Thunderbirds will get significantly better when their Canada U21 players return after Easter. This match won’t give a full picture of their potential in the playoffs. It’s a similar roster that lost to Lomas last weekend, Lanae Davenport is back and starts on the wing.
CW have Josie Anzai and Kassidy Cej back but are missing Temitope Ogunjimi. CW had a +13 win last time these teams met in Vancouver. Prediction: CW by +5.

WAH WAH WAH WE LOST TWO GUYS TO URUGUAY (10 FULL SPOTS ABOVE US IN THE RANKINGS AND CHURNING OUT PROFESSIONAL RUGBY PLAYERS AT A CLIP WE COULD ONLY DREAM OF). OH WHOOPS THREE DUDES JUST SHOW UP AT OUR DOOR FROM PAC PRIDE!!! HUDDY HUDDY AM I RIGHT?
Some of the saddest dudes are the ones who hold onto a past that is never returning.
Have you seen the state of the Pride..? Not like getting three players from them is really going to help that much
Some of the bravest dudes are those that courageously post online in ALL CAPS hiding behind a shroud of anonymity. Like sucker punching someone from behind and running away. You should use your real name but I suppose that would require some intestinal fortitude and maybe stepping out from behind the safety of your keyboard.
