BC Premier Week 15 Results: UBC End Burnaby Playoff Hopes, Pride Draw with Capilano, Meraloma Defeat Vikes, Ravens Soar Past Westshore – Women’s Premier Burnaby Fall to CW
This is the last weekend of the scheduled regular season, there’s one more weekend of make-up games next week and then the playoffs start April 12th.
Burnaby Lake 7 v UBC 66 @ 14:30
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: CLINT LEMKUS AR2: Elijah Lockington
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
There was not the miracle finish for Burnaby this weekend and UBC seem one of the form teams going into the playoffs. UBC with 42 points from 12 matches, 3.5 points per match have a firm hold on 2nd place for the playoffs but haven’t locked it up yet. If they lose next week against CW, without a bonus point, they will have 3.23 points per match, the Lomas currently have 3.09 points per match and if they win next week with a bonus point that would give them 3.25, ahead of UBC. UBC are in a must win situation next week (or a losing bonus point) if they want the quarter-final bye. Burnaby are at 18 points from 11 matches, 1.64 points per match, the best they can do with a bonus point win over Lomas next week is 1.92 points per match. Caps currently are 2.27, if they lose next week against UVic, they will be at 2.08. So Burnaby are officially eliminated from the playoffs, as are UVic, and Caps are officially in the playoffs.
PREGAME
#8 hosting #3. With a big upset win over #2 Pacific Pride last week, Burnaby will be setting its sights on #3 UBC. There’s only 4 points separating Burnaby from Capilano and a playoff spot so they’ll be hoping for a win and a Capilano loss. UBC won’t want to give up their hard fought battle for 2nd ranking in the playoffs and a quarter-final bye, so they can’t afford a loss and a Meraloma win this weekend.
UBC only have one change from last weekend in the starting XV with Liam Kinghorn switching places with Sandon Gupta and getting the start at blindside flanker.
Burnaby missing Ethan Turner this week, likely to the 7s camp. Ed Shepherdson moves from inside centre to #10. Jack Bolton comes into the match 23 as blindside flanker and David Dinbandhu starts at openside. Fynn Murphy comes off the bench to start at inside centre.
Burnaby got the miracle finish last week against the Pride, UBC should be a tougher task. Prediction: UBC by +7.

Capilano 35 v Pacific Pride 35 @ 14:30
Referee: David Smortchevsky AR1: Joel Van Meer AR2: Rachel Morrison
Venue: Klahanie Park
A result than ensures the Caps a place in the playoffs. They play UVic next weekend, a bonus point win would give the Caps 2.50 points per match not enough to catch Westshore for 5th place at 2.53. However if CW lose to UBC without a bonus point they would be at 2.4 and Caps could possibly climb to 5th place in the playoff rankings. CW need a win, draw or double bonus point loss next week against UBC to stay ahead of the Caps if they get a bonus point win against the Vikes.
PREGAME
#7 hosting #2. The Caps need this win to keep ahead of Burnaby in the battle for the last playoff spot. The Pride fell off their game against Burnaby last weekend in the final 10 minutes letting in 3 tries. Since they’re not eligible for the playoffs there could be a lack of motivation near the end of the season. The Caps had a bye so will be rested up. Complicating things for teams this weekend is a national team 7s camp which will mean some of the clubs will be missing key players. The Pride will be missing some of their starting backline players, the Caps might be missing Johnny Franklin.
The Pride have some TBD in their reserve backline (at the time of writing) as the 7s camp has an effect on their selections. James Thiel, Rhys James, Kyle Tremblay and Thomas Cuzange are missing this week from the starting backline. Chris Rose gets the start at scrum half, Noah Kyneston starts at #8 and Taine Clague finds himself on the wing this week.
Caps missing Izzak Kelly and Jacob Bossi, but they have Johnny Franklin, one of the few 7s players in action this weekend. The rest of the roster remains the same for this important match. It’s Alumni Day at Klahanie so expecting some extra motivation for the team.
Normally Pride would go in as favourites but that shock loss to Burnaby last week plus they’re missing a number of their starting backline. Calling the upset this week. Prediction: Caps by +2.

University Of Victoria 14 v Meraloma 47 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Chris Horsley AR2: Martin Thornton
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field
The loss eliminates the Vikes from playoff contention, the win gives the Lomas a slim chance of claiming the #2 playoff ranking but they would need UBC to lose next weekend to CW without a bonus point while the Lomas get a bonus point win against Burnaby next weekend.
PREGAME
#9 hosting #4. The Vikes are 6 points away from a playoff spot, thei playoff hopes look dire and if they don’t win this week or at least get a double bonus point, they could be officially eliminated depending on other results with Capilano and Burnaby. The Lomas are still in with a shot for the 2nd ranking playoff spot but they would need UBC to stumble in one of their remaining two games. They need a bonus point win to keep their hopes alive.
UVic missing Morgan di Nardo and Thoran Koyote takes his spot on the wing. Josh Petrov and Brendan Kim come off the bench to start in the second row and Muiredach Casey moves to #8. Sully Curran moves from reserve hooker to starting blindside flanker.
The Lomas with a number of changes from last week, they rotate their front row and some of their forwards from the reserves. Corne Ludick moves from blindside flanker to inside centre with Doug Fraser not in the match 23. Josh Ferriman starts at fullback with Jordan Wilson-Ross moving to the reserves.
The Vikes on a 3 game losing streak, the Lomas only losses in the new year were to the top 2 teams. Prediction: Lomas by +6.

Westshore 15 v UBCOB Ravens 41 @ 14:30
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Michael Moss AR2: Leighton Burridge
Venue: Cowichan Rugby Club
Both teams have finished their regular season, the Ravens claiming top spot, a bye in the quarter-finals and a home field in the semi-finals. Westshore guaranteed of making the playoffs in either 4th or 5th place. They’ll wait for the result of UBC @ CW next weekend to see where they finish.
PREGAME
#5 hosting #1. The Ravens haven’t been defeated yet this season and Westshore are only 2 points ahead of CW for the home field playoff quarter-final. CW play UBC next weekend so bonus points may become important. The Juan de Fuca fields are closed so the game has been moved to Cowichan.
Westshore are missing their three 7s players, Thomas Isherwood, Kal Sager and Elias Hancock so that will impact their performance. Taylor McGuire retains his #10 spot and Payton Gibson comes into the match 23 to take the outside centre position.
The Ravens may be a little light in the front row with coach Chris Taylor starting at tighthead and the reserve tighthead as a TBD. Jack Carson starts at scrum half and Jake Thiel comes in as fullback. The Ravens have a 6/2 split perhaps anticipating some muddy conditions with the spring rains.
The Ravens #1 and undefeated go in as favourites, Westshore missing three national 7s players will impact them. Prediction: Ravens by +7.

PREGAME
#3 hosting #5. CW will be hoping to gain ground on Westshore to host the semi-final match, Burnaby looking to overtake Seattle to host the quarter-final match.
CW with the big win over Westshore last weekend, they only have a few changes to the starting XV. Jess Beaudry comes off the bench to start at hooker, Lucie Beauchemin comes into the match 23 as blindside flanker, Olivia Newsome starts on the wing.
Burnaby were blown out last weekend by the #1 Thunderbirds. They’ve made a few changes, #8 Ada Okonkwo moves to loosehead prop, Emily van Gulik comes off the bench to start at #8. Miriama Naiobasali comes into the match 23 at fullback and Sara Eskildsen at outside centre.

Club season over by the end of March? Any wonder why our rugby standards are slipping, we aren’t playing enough games?
Over by the end of March, with a 2+ month break in the middle, and a couple weather impacted weekends. But hey, let’s not consider a unified national season
