BC Rugby Weekend of March 8th 2025

BC Premier Week 12 Results: CW Rock Bays, Ravens Defeat Lomas, UBC Soar Past Westshore, Burnaby Fall to Caps, Pride Dominate Vikes

A full schedule this weekend in the BC Premier with all 10 teams in action. There’s only 4 weekends of matches in the regular season after this weekend, the playoff picture will start to get clearer after this round of matches.

James Bay AA 5 v Castaway Wanderers 35 @ 14:30
Referee: Doug Thorpe AR1: Darren Munro AR2: Kaitlyn Jinda
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park

Well we didn’t read this one very well, CW with a comfortable win away from home. The Bays are mathematically eliminated from playoff contention, CW are well in the hunt, maybe with a home quarter-final in sight. CW are at 2.77 points per match which is still 6th place (5th for playoff ranking with Pride not eligible) but they are just a fraction behind Westshore (2.8) for the 4th playoff ranking spot. Next week CW host the Vikes while the Bays visit UBC.

PREGAME

#10 hosting #6. The Bays lost a close match to Westshore in their last outing, while CW were blown away by league leading Ravens.

CW with minor changes from last weekend, Ronan Graham comes into the roster on the wing, Jack Wallace moves from hooker to openside, Antonio Corbin comes off the bench and starts at hooker.

The Bays have Cody Nhanala back and he starts at #8, he was at the NRL combine in Vegas last weekend, trying to get noticed in the League game. Their new Fijian, Tevita Daugunu, gets the start at outside centre.

It’s a historic rivalry and always spirited. CW’s big loss last weekend is concerning, are the Ravens that good or are CW slipping. The Bays looked good last weekend against Westshore, D’Shawn Bowen is on top form and now they have Cody Nhanala back. It’s going to be an entertaining battle. Prediction: Bays by +2.

Meraloma 19 v UBCOB Ravens 27 @ 14:30
Referee: Bradley Schwalger AR1: CLINT LEMKUS AR2: Scott Johnson
Venue: Connaught Park

The Ravens keep rolling and sit well ahead in the rankings, virtually assured of finishing top in the regular season. The Lomas fall to 3.0 points per match and are in a tie for 3rd/4th (2nd/3rd playoff ranking) now with UBC. All to play for in securing that first round playoff bye for the top 2 teams. The Ravens visit Capilano next week while the Lomas visit Burnaby.

PREGAME

#3 hosting #1. The Lomas haven’t played since February 1st when they defeated Westshore, the Ravens had a resounding win over CW in their last match on March 1st.

The Ravens seemed to have found the formula at #10 with Aaron McLelland away, Logan Henry returns to start at flyhalf. Owain Ruttan and David O’Donoghue come off the bench to start in the backrow. With Iwan Shenton missing, Ethan MacDonald moves from flanker to second row. There’s no change to the backline.

The Lomas have a few rotations in the forward pack with Ethan Jaques coming off the bench to start at openside flanker. Joe Thomas comes off the bench to start at #10 with Matt Roberts not in the match day 23. Veterans Doug Fraser and Jordan Wilson-Ross return to the roster and start in the backline. Fullback Rory McParland also returns to the roster for a starting role.

This could be a preview of the final, the Ravens with an undefeated record to date, only one draw, have to go in as favourites. Prediction: Ravens by +5.

University Of Victoria 28 v Pacific Pride 70 @ 14:30
Referee: Joel Van Meer AR1: Juan Pablo Rey AR2: David Hale
Venue: U Of Victoria- Wallace Field

The Pride flexing as they dominate with a +42 win. The Pride are in 2nd place which is where they’re likely to finish the season. They have a bye next week while the Vikes visit CW. The Vikes have a points per match average of 1.88 and they have to catch the Caps at 2.33 to make the playoffs. They have four games left and 2 of the keys ones will be against CW next week and a make up game on April 5th against Capilano.

PREGAME

#8 hosting #2. The Vikes had a come from behind victory over Burnaby last weekend, the Pride coming off two consecutive wins in February, the last a convincing win over JBAA.

The Vikes have a completely unchanged starting XV, we don’t see that often. A couple of changes on the bench and Angus Boyd-Porter is back in the roster in the reserves.

The Pride have rotated their front row, and Mason McDonald has come into the roster as a starting second row. Taine Clague comes off the bench to start at #8, and Mitch Buie also rotates from the bench to starting scrum half. Rhys James returns to the roster at inside centre and teams up with Liam Poulton. James Thiel gets the start on the wing.

The Vikes earned their win last weekend with superior fitness and finding defensive gaps in the last 20, it will be a different story against an equally fit Rugby Canada academy side. Pride should be favourites going into the match. Prediction: Pride by +5.

Westshore 14 v UBC 41 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: Martin Thornton
Venue: Juan De Fuca

UBC with a dominant second half pulled away in a game that was close at the half. The result puts UBC in a tie with Meraloma for 3rd/4th place (2nd/3rd for playoff ranking). Westshore drop to 5th with CW in pursuit.

UBC opened the scoring 14 minutes in with a counter attack off a clearing kick, #13 Alastair Marshall broke through some weak defensive tackling and found #9, Stephen Webb, on his shoulder for the try, 7-0. At 24 minutes Westshore responded when second row Joe Kingham created some space with a swivel move and then offloaded to #14 Alex Mentiply who weaved in for the score, 7-7. UBC went ahead at the 29 minute mark when a run off a dominant scrum put them inside the 5 metres, hooker, Emmet Allan, eventually crossing the line, 14-7. Westshore tied it up at 34 minutes with some prolonged possession inside the 22, fullback Johnstone Olindi found the narrowest of gaps and offloaded to #10, Jimmy Wilson-Bishop, in support who scored under the posts, 14-14. Another score at 36 minutes by UBC showed the strength of their counter-attack game as they punished an aimless kick with no chase from Westshore, Talon McMullin rounded the corner and suddenly there was a dearth of defenders, it went to #7 to #8, Relmu Wilson-Valdes, who hoofed it in from 22 metres out, 21-14 for UBC and it was still anyone’s game.

It was all UBC in the second half however as they scored 20 more points on 3 tries and a penalty kick, going 26-14, 33-14, 36-14, and finally 41-14.

Westshore have a bye next week while UBC host James Bay.

PREGAME

#4 hosting #5. Westshore coming off a narrow home win over the Bays while UBC looked impressive with a +38 win over Capilano.

Westshore have a couple of changes in the forwards, Porter Gook replaces Brian Waraba and Clinton Odhiambo comes in as a new player to start in the second row. There’s little change in the backline with Payton Gibson replacing Darian Morrison in the starting XV.

UBC have only one change in the starting XV, Charlie Clark comes off the bench to start at second row.

UBC have started the new year on a strong note, they drew with #1 Ravens, the only team to deny the Ravens a win this season. They then were dominant in a win over Capilano last weekend. Westshore just narrowly got by the last place Bays last weekend and ran the Pride close in the match before that in a narrow loss. The Birds look like they’re peaking for a strong playoff run. Prediction: UBC by +2.

Capilano 27  v Burnaby Lake 13 @ 14:45
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: Tyler Dawson AR2: Mark Abercrombie
Venue: Klahanie Park

Another game we got wrong, and it’s now looking dire for Burnaby making the playoffs this season. They sit in 9th with a 1.5 points per match average and they have some tough games to end the season against Lomas, Pride and UBC. The Caps and Vikes will likely be battling it out for the final playoff spot but it doesn’t get easy for the Caps as they host the undefeated Ravens next weekend.

PREGAME

#7 hosting #9. Caps losing big to UBC last weekend, Burnaby failing to hold onto a lead and falling the Vikes last weekend.

Burnaby have a few changes in the forwards, Lalit Bharadwaj comes off the bench to start at hooker and Leo Chen in the second row. James Catterson comes into the lineup to start at #8. Hayden Mulgrew returns to start on the wing.

Caps have only one change to the starting roster with Mike Moloney out, Ben Taylor goes to the wing and Ryan Leskiw moves from wing to fullback.

Two clubs battling for a playoff spot, this match could be a key decider, a must win for Burnaby to stay in the hunt. Burnaby were well in control of the match last weekend but faded badly in the last 20. The Caps missing Mike Moloney might be a factor. Prediction: Burnaby by +3.
