BC Premier Semi-Final Results: #4 Bays Fall to #1 Ravens, #6 UVic Upset #2 UBC – Women’s Premier #4 Westshore Upset #1 Lomas, #3 Thunderbirds Defeat #2 Burnaby
A couple of upsets in the BC Premier and a couple of wins by defending champions. In the men’s Premier UVic upset UBC and in the women’s Premier Westshore upset Meraloma. The defending champions from last year in both men’s and women’s Premier continued through in strong form. The Ravens put in a +40 win in men’s Premier and Thunderbirds had a +17 win in women’s Premier. All the results from the 14 matches are posted below.
Men’s Premier
UBCOB Ravens 45 v James Bay AA 5 @ 14:30
Referee: Cole Pedrick AR1: David Smortchevsky (Pending) AR2: Bradley Schwalger
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
No surprises here and the Ravens look strong contenders to defend their Premier title from last year. The Bays weren’t able to put up the defensive effort to slow down the Ravens attack. We look forward to Peter MacDonald’s account of the match. The Ravens will face UVic in the final, surprise winners over UBC.
PREGAME
#1 hosting #4. The Ravens haven’t lost a game in 2026, their last loss coming in November 2025. The Bays just edged past Capilano in the quarters but shut down #2 UBC in the last regular season match. They have a 7-2 record in 2026 after a poor start to the season. The teams split games this season, Bays winning 42-28 in September and Ravens winning 38-8 in November.
As expected not many changes from the previous matches. The Bays only change is on the bench with Jeremiah Gonevou replacing Mark Yuen.
The Ravens only change to the starting XV is bringing David O’Donaghue off the bench to start at openside and Jake Ikeda moving to a backup role. The three backline reserves are changed from last week with Noah Jenson, Noah Bain and Mark Wandeto looking to make a second half impact.
The Bays have improved a lot since the fall season but is it enough to take down the #1 Ravens, the defending champions. I don’t think so. Prediction: Ravens by +7.

UBC 21 v University Of Victoria 37 @ 14:30
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Kristine Lovatt AR2: Justyn Roberts TZM: Lauren Hancock
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre
UVic with the big upset, from just making the playoffs as the 6th place team, to a spot in the final. Having three national team players in the roster made a big difference, Cooper Coats at #10 and on the outside Morgan di Nardo and David Richard. The commentary team of Jonty Nichols and Jon Mergui, pro UBC as home commentators, did a great job calling the game.
PREGAME
#2 hosting #6. UVic upset #3 Westshore in the quarter-finals to earn a semi-final against their university rival in the semis. UBC have had an up and down spring season going 5-3, they were upset by #4 JBAA in their last match. UVic have had a 6-4 spring season.
UVic have only made one change to the starting XV with Adam Doane not available, Muiredach Casey starts at blindside flanker. Josh McIndoe makes it back into the roster in the reserves. Aiden de Wit also returns as reserve hooker.
UBC make one change in the starting XV at tighthead prop, Graeme Francolini getting the start. Ben Beauchamp and Max McGavern switch roles with McGavern going to fullback and Beauchamp to wing.
UBC have already defeated UVic twice this season but that was in the fall season. Cooper Coats has been a key factor in UVic’s resurgence this spring. UBC can be stopped with tough defence as JBAA proved, can UVic summon that defensive effort? UVic gave up 527 points this season compared to UBC’s 336 points. In one game anything is possible but UBC go in as favourites at home. Prediction: UBC by +6.

Meraloma 10 v Westshore 19 @ 12:15
Referee: Juan Pablo Rey AR1: Pierre Iachetti AR2: Michael Blais TZM: David Williams
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
Another upset with the #4 team taking down the #1 team from the regular season. Westshore putting in a big defensive effort to keep the Lomas to 10 points. They’ll face defending champions Thunderbirds in the final.
PREGAME
#1 hosting #4. The teams split the matches during the season, Lomas winning 34-21 in February and Westshore winning 28-10 later in the month. Both teams lost at home and won on the road.
Lomas lost to Burnaby in their last match. A few changes from that match, Elyce Thomas starts at tighthead prop. Jessica Nelson starts at blindside flanker. There’s some rotation in the squad #6 Bea Collier-Pandya starts at scrum-half, scrum-half Cassidy Gale starts at outside centre.
Westshore defeated CW in the quarter-finals. Aila Norlin returns at second row and Celia Probe moves to blindside flanker. Abigail Hall replaces Maya Addai at outside centre.
The teams are evenly matched, splitting the regular season matches. Have to go with the team that kept #1 ranking throughout the season. Prediction: Meraloma by +3.

Burnaby Lake 14 v Vancouver Thunderbirds 31 @ 12:45
Referee: Nathaniel Hight AR1: Joel Van Meer AR2: JT ZHANG (Pending) TZM: John Hight
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
As expected the Thunderbirds look unstoppable as defending champions, and favourites to add another title this year. When these teams met in February it was 73-10 for the Thunderbirds, so a big improvement from Burnaby but not enough. It’s Thunderbirds v Westshore in the final, a familiar scenario.
PREGAME
The Thunderbirds as defending champions were favourites going into the season, their roster has been up and down as they fed the Canada U21 team and also participated in the CanWest 7s. Their squad is locked in for the playoffs now. They defeated Westshore by +52 in their last match and 12 of the starters are returning from that match, they’re missing a couple of key players Anya Propkopich and Belle Rousseau but have added national team player Kiki Idowu.
Burnaby defeated #1 Meraloma last match. Burnaby have a couple of dynamic Fijian players in the backline, plus Ada Okonkwo has returned to the roster. The Thunderbirds continue to be favourites this season but Burnaby at home might be capable of the surprise upset. Prediction: Thunderbirds by +5.
