Men’s Premier

UBCOB Ravens 30 v University Of Victoria 3 @ 16:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Nathaniel Hight AR2: Cole Pedrick TZM: Phil Webster
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

The Ravens scored first off a dominant scrum, scrum-half Billy Wickham just had to pick up the ball and fall down across the line for the first score, 5-0. Vikes countered with a penalty kick, 5-3. The Ravens scored their 2nd try off strong forward play, #2 Jake Tierney crossing the line, 12-3. Winger Cole Keffer scored next for the Ravens off quick ball to the outside from a Ravens lineout, 17-3. That’s the half time score.

Ravens added a penalty in the 2nd haf 20-3. Ravens replacement front row #19 crossed the line next, 27-3. Andrew Coe kicking that difficult conversion from the sideline.  Ravens take a penalty kick in front of the posts as they make it a four score lead, 30-3.

Commentators, Chris Blackman and Keith Lumby, chose Lockie Kratz as man of the match with special mentions to #8 Joe Locke and the Carsons in the second row.

PREGAME

The Ravens won the last matchup fairly easily 49-24 but UVic rested Cooper Coats and Morgan di Nardo in that match.

The Ravens have no changes in their roster from the semi-final win over JBAA. They have a formidable forward pack with Frank and Don Carson in the engine room, Reegan O’Gorman, David O’Donaghue and Joe Locke in the loose forwards. Lockie Kratz at #10 has been big signing for them and a back three of Andrew Coe, Jack Carson, and Cole Keffer. Former Canada 7s player Noah Bain in the reserves shows their depth.

The big news for UVic is Cooper Coats is out, he picked up an injury in the UBC match. That changes the complexion of the game completely. The #6 team made a meteoric rise through the playoffs knocking off the #2 and #3 teams in the semis and quarters. That was with Cooper Coats, the incumbent national team #10 leading the backline attack. With his absence, rookie Michael Oughtred gets the start at #10, David Richard gets moved to fullback, Josh McIndoe to wing and Lockhart MacGregor comes into the roster as starting outside centre.

Two talented backlines, the question is can the UVic forwards match up against the Ravens forwards for the full 80. Ravens are defending champions and #1 in the regular season, UVic have defeated two higher ranked opponents in the quarter-finals and semi-finals, but they are now missing a key player in the final? Prediction: Ravens by +8.

Women’s Premier

Westshore 17 v Vancouver Thunderbirds 38 @ 14:15
Referee: Justine Blatt-Janmaat AR1: Julianne Zussman AR2: Benjamin Lambrick TZM: John Cameron
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

Westshore scored first, #8 Emily Findlay, 5-0. Thunderbirds hit back, maul and try by Kiki Idowu, converted, 7-5 for UBC. UBC added a penalty 10-5. Kiki Idowu struck again, showing why she was called up to the Canada side this spring, 15-5. Thunderbirds added one more before half, Westshore #13 Maya Addai had a line break and ran it into the Thunderbirds 22 but there was no support and it was turned over, UBC countered, again Kiki Idowu featured with a long run and it was finished off by #10 Sarah MacPherson, 20-5 at the half.

Thunderbirds added 3 to start the 2nd half, 23-5. Emily Findlay Westshore #8 scored her 2nd try off the back of a scrum that was going forward, 23-10. Thunderbirds scored next, a try in the backs, #12 Vela Baravian, 28-10. Sarah MacPherson scored her second finishing off some nice work by sub #23 Chloe Bong, 33-10. Olivia Sarabura #13 scored next for the Thunderbirds off a chip kick, 38-10. Vanessa Chiapetta finished off the scoring for Westshore at the whistle, final score 38-17.

PREGAME

The Thunderbirds have won both regular season matches, the last one in April by +52 points. The Thunderbirds are four time repeat champions and defeated Westshore the last three years in the final.

Westshore have national team tighthead prop Sierra Gillis back in the starting roster and Canada 7s player Maya Addai back in the centres. The return of those two players will help the team.

The Thunderbirds roster is based on the one published in the BCRU program and that program has had some errors, we’ll update if necessary when the Thunderbirds publish their roster. The only significant change the BCRU program is showing is Ella Kirk at blindside flanker replacing Ruby Kaltiainen.

Westshore had national team players like Asia Hogan-Rochester and Breanne Nicholas suit up for them this season and they would need at least one of them today to break the Thunderbirds winning streak. It would be a big upset if Westshore could pull off the win. Prediction: Thunderbirds by +7.

Men’s Div 1

Vancouver Rowing Club 29 v Capilano 20 @ 12:15
Referee: Kristine Lovatt AR1: David Smortchevsky AR2: Phil Webster TZM: Trevor Honey
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

The Rowers lost in Div 3 but were winners in Div 1. Rowers scored first from prolonged pressure inside the Caps 22, #10 Jack Ussher found a seam and put it down under the posts, 7-0. Rowers doubled that a little later, again finding space out wide, they settled in to the 5 metres and kept possession. Scrum half, Jack Goodin, spotted daylight from a ruck and dove over the line, 14-0 for Rowers. Caps got one back as veterans Glenn McKinnon and Chris Robinson teamed up to finally break the Rowers defence with a final pass to the outside where it looked like #4, Joe Britt, was lurking and he dove over, no conversion, 14-5. Rowers added a penalty kick before half, 17-5.

Caps scored first in the 2nd half, it looked like hooker James Ritzema, just reaching over the line from a ruck and touching it down beside the uprights, the easy conversion missed, 17-10. Caps add a third try when scrum half William Dormaar found some space inside the Rowers 22 and sprinted 15 metres for the try, again unconverted, 17-15. The conversion kicking was hurting the Caps chances. The Rowers didn’t wait around and added a converted try, 24-15, veteran Jordan Wilson-Ross driving several tacklers back to score. Rowers added one more on a chip and chase that defenders couldn’t handle, 29-15. Caps scored at the whistle, again unconverted, and the final 29-20 for Rowers.

Capilano 44 v Kamloops 7 @ 15:15
Referee: JT ZHANG AR1: Bradley Schwalger AR2: Saro Turner TZM: Jamie Overgaard
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

Caps opened the scoring with a nice chip from #10, Savannah Bauder, out to the wing #11, Rachel Vukovich. That was Premier level play right there. Caps scored their next with one of the big second row going over, 10-0. Caps added a penalty, 13-0. Caps 3rd try was quick ball out wide, #12 crossing the line, 18-0. That was the halftime score.

When play resumed in the second half, the scoreboard was adjusted to 20-0, so one of the conversions was good. Caps #12, Madeline Warner,  scored her 2nd try with some good evasive running, 27-0 with the conversion. Big #4 for Caps, Stacey Hake, scored her 2nd try with a powerful run, 32-0. Another Caps try out wide, 39-0. Kamloops gets one back, 39-7. The final try by Caps #5, Ella Musgrove, final 44-7.

PREGAME

Kelowna Crows 21 v Kamloops 15 @ 13:15
Referee: Thomas Cooper AR1: Lance Davison AR2: Justyn Roberts TZM: Kuljiwan (Jivan) Dhaliwal
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

Kamloops opened the scoring with a penalty, 3-0. Kelowna hit back with a try, Melani Nanai playing in the backline attracted defensive attention and flicked the ball outside, Jef Vreys finished off the play, 7-3. Kelowna added another on the outside as they had the advantage in speed, wing Tristan Gaudry the try scorer, 14-3. Kelowna’s next try was top shelf, interplay between 10, 13, 14 down the field with #10 Rick Schouten finishing the play he started, 21-3. Kamloops answered back with the big forwards rumbling forward and scoring the try, 21-8. Kamloops notched another one when #9 Benjamin Carroll intercepted a pass and scooted the length of the field, 21-15. That was the last score and the match ended 21-15 in Kelowna’s favour.

PREGAME

Kelowna have Melani Nanai on the bench, not bad when you can sub on a veteran player with over 60 caps in Super Rugby and an Samoan international. Kamloops have an up and coming NextGen player at #10, Daniel Turvey, he’s on the Canadian Howlers tour to Argentina this summer.

Kelowna Crows 28 v Chilliwack Crusaders 12 @ 11:15
Referee: Michael Blais AR1: Rachel Morrison AR2: Lauren Hancock TZM: Ryan Lambrick (Pending)
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

The stream seemed to start late and it was 7-0 already for Chilliwack when coverage started. The commentators, not sure yet who they are, mentioned the lone score was a 80 metre run by #13 Kira Katan, converted by #9 Kyla Knox. That’s the halftime score.

Kelowna scored first in the 2nd half, #10 Olivia Burns scoring off a well worked change of direction attack that left Chilliwack with few defenders. Conversion made, 7-7. Chilliwack score next out wide, unconverted, 12-7. Kelowna counter with a pick and go option from a penalty inside the 5 metres, they cross the line near the post, 12-12 with the kick to come. The conversion is made and now Kelowna lead 14-12. Chilliwack were pressing for the go ahead try but a pass to the outside went astray and was picked up by Kelowna winger Jadeynn Papineau who sprinted 80 metres to put Kelowna further ahead, 21-12 with the conversion. Kelowna added one more on a chip and chase just before the final whistle, final 28-12 for Kelowna.

Men’s Div 3

Burnaby Lake 43 v Vancouver Rowing Club 10 @ 10:15
Referee: Tyler DAWSON AR1: Peter MacDonald AR2: Jeremy Duncan TZM: Rupert Whiting
Venue: South Surrey Ath Pk

Jake Thiel and Jamie Mackenzie are providing play by play commentary on the match and doing a great job. It’s good to see the BCRU dispense with their Ai Veo system for the finals and use live camera and commentary instead.

The half time score is 17-3 for Burnaby. Rowers opened the match with 3 points but then Burnaby did the rest of the scoring in the first half. The first two scores were set up by strong forward play in the maul and pick and goes near the goal line. The 3rd try was an impressive solo effort by fullback Cole Northcott who beat his defender out wide, chipped the ball ahead for a Burnaby try.

Burnaby opened the 2nd half with a fortuitous try as the defender slipped while trying to cover a chip kick, the ball bounced up to the Burnaby chasers and #13 Jordan McKenzie was the beneficiary of the final pass, now 24-3 for Burnaby. Burnaby followed up with another try, again setup by a mishandled kick, after several phases Cole Northcott crossed the line. He’s definitely one of the contenders for player of the match. It’s now 31-3 for Burnaby.  Rowers get one back from prolonged pressure inside the Burnaby 5 metres, 31-10. Northcott strikes again, poaching the ball for the turnover, then a few minutes later making a line break, getting the return pass, scoring the try, Burnaby leading 36-10. Northcott again a few minutes later, chip, chase and score, the man is owning this game, 43-10 for Burnaby.

PREGAME

Burnaby’s loosehead prop, Lalit Bharadwaj, should do well at this level as he was a starting prop at the Premier level from about 2022 to 2025. Neil Maclaine also a regular Premier starter up to 2024. Rower’s Sawyer Herron a regular Premier starter with CW, then Ravens up to 2023.
