Men Premier
Castaway Wanderers 25 v James Bay AA 17 @ 14:30
Referee: Benjamin Lambrick AR1: Juan Pablo Rey AR2: James Roszel
Venue: Windsor Park
We called CW +3 and it was CW +8, sounds like an entertaining match. CW move to 3-2 on the season (2.8 points per match), the Bays 1-4 (1.0 points per match). Next week the Bays host the Ravens and CW visit Westshore.
PREGAME
CW are 2-2 on the season, the Bays are 1-3.
CW add two forwards, John Humphries in the second row and Jack Wallace at openside. Jordan Tait returns to outside centre and they’ve added Jeremiah Munoz at fullback.
The Bays have added Max Stewart at #10, he was in South Africa for a while after leaving the Pride and 7s program, recuperating from an injury. It’s good to see him back in the Canada mix, early in his Pride career we had thought he could be the future national #10 before the 7s program took him. That will be a great #10 matchup against Gradyn Bowd on the CW side. The Bays also have Phil Berna who wasn’t selected for the Canada 7s team going to the RAN tournament. Those are the major changes for the Bays, and they’ve added a guy called Phil Mack as the 23rd player. Wyatt Pilz comes in as tighthead.
Should be an interesting battle with the changes that the Bays have from their last outing when they were smoked by Capilano. CW haven’t lost a home game yet this season, so give them the edge. Prediction: CW by +3.

Burnaby Lake 12 v Capilano 15 @ 14:30
Referee: Saro Turner AR1: Joel Van Meer AR2: Matthew Myers
Venue: Burnaby Lake Rugby Club
We called Burnaby +1 and it was Caps +3, a close match and all matches in the men’s Premier were close today. Caps move to 2-3 (2.2 points per match) and Burnaby to 2-1-3 (2.5 points per match). Next week Caps host the Lomas and Burnaby have a bye.
PREGAME
Burnaby 2-1-2 on the season, Capilano 1-3. Both teams coming off wins in their last match.
Caps have Saba Shubitidze back at openside, Johnny Franklin missing as he was called up to the 7s program going to the RAN tournament but a capable Melani Nanai takes his place at #13. Mike Moloney returns from the Classics tournament where he led Canada to the finals playing at #10, he’s slotted in at fullback this weekend.
Burnaby have Hayden Mulgrew back on the wing and Ezequiel Rossetti takes Reid Watkins spot at scrum half with Watkins missing this week. James Kelly gets the start at hooker.
It’s a toss up between these teams, expecting a close game but we’ll give the nod to the home team. Prediction: Burnaby by +1.

UBCOB Ravens 10 v Meraloma 5 @ 14:30
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Nathaniel Hight AR2: Tyler Dawson
Venue: Jericho Beach Park
We called Ravens +6 and it was Ravens +5, hopefully a report by Peter MacDonald will shed some light on the low scoring match. The Ravens remain top of the table and the only undefeated team, the Lomas go 3-3 (2.83 points per match). Next week Ravens visit JBAA and the Lomas visit Capilano.
PREGAME
A battle of the top teams, a replay of the final last year. Ravens undefeated so far this season. Just noticing the BCRU standings have listed the Meraloma v Burnaby match earlier in the season as a default by the Lomas and have it listed as a 20-0 Burnaby win.
The Lomas have Rory McParland back at fullback and Geoff Brooks gets the start at hooker, those are the only changes to their starting XV.
The Ravens have Aaron McLelland back at #10 and David O’Donoghue at openside. Jack Carson moves to fullback and Jake Thiel starts on the wing. They’re moving the big man around the roster. There are 5 Carsons in the roster. Noah Bain was called up to the national 7s team travelling to the RAN 7s. Joshua Tweed returns to the roster as starting loosehead prop.
The Ravens at home and undefeated go in as favourites. Prediction: Ravens by +6.

Women Premier
Castaway Wanderers 19 v Seattle Rugby 10 @ 13:00
Referee: Kristine Lovatt AR1: Olivia Ross AR2: Al Humphries
Venue: Windsor Park
We called CW +5 and it was CW +9, as expected a closer match than Seattle’s latest forays to BC. CW go to 2-2 in the standings, 2.25 points per match, Seattle are 0-3 and in last place. Next week CW have a bye and Seattle host Westshore.
PREGAME
Seattle are 0-2 on their trips to BC losing big to Westshore and Burnaby. CW are 1-2, their win coming against a Thunderbirds 2 side that didn’t travel with enough front row sub, so forfeited the match.
Seattle have some big players but they don’t have a lot of outside speed. They have a new blindside flanker in Taylor Pearson, Hannah Kang at #8 is new to the roster from last match. Sally Egan at fullback is added to the roster. The remaining starting XV are from the roster that played Westshore on November 2nd.
CW have Chanelle Edwards Challenger back in the roster, the rest of the forward pack is consistent from last match. In the backs Remee Brown is the new face at outside centre, the rest of the backline remains the same with some switching of positions.
I would think Seattle would do well in the tight game with their size, if CW can bring some speed to the outside and get the ball there quickly they should find success. Anticipating a close match. Prediction: CW by +5.

Vancouver Thunderbirds 2 58 v Westshore 0 @ 12:45
Referee: Doug Thorpe AR1: Karl Hall AR2: JT ZHANG
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre
We called Thunderbirds +7 and it was Thunderbirds +58, not surprising considering it was the core of the Thunderbirds top side and Westshore travelled minus some top players. Thunderbirds 2 are 2-1 on the season (3.3 points per match) and Westshore are 1-1 (2.5 points per match). Next week Westshore travel to Seattle and Thunderbirds 2 travel to Burnaby.
PREGAME
The Thunderbirds 2nd team are 1-1, splitting games with CW, winning the home match, losing the road game. Westshore are 1-0 with a big win over Seattle at home.
Westshore are missing several key players on their first road trip. There are two players on the Canada 7s team travelling to the PR7s tournament this weekend, Asia Hogan-Rochester and Eden Kilgour. They’re missing starting prop Chelsey Minter and outside centre Renee Gonzalez. They’re also travelling short with only 20 players listed.
UBC have a lot of depth in their program, their 1st team, which won the University Championships, haven’t even had a BC Premier game yet, but will be early favourites to repeat as Premier champions. Actually looking through the roster this is the 1st team minus a number of star backline players. The starting XV are all players from their Gold medal game roster at the University championships except 3 backline players. So this is a fully locked and loaded roster for a 2nd team.
With Westshore missing key players and UBC just missing the star backline players from their University Championship team, this is looking like a Thunderbirds win. Prediction: Thunderbirds by +7.

Men’s Exhibition
Westshore 36 v Seattle 12 @ 14:30
Referee: Andrew Foster
Venue: Juan De Fuca
An exhibition match for Westshore on their bye week, the Seattle women are in town playing CW and the men, who aren’t in the BC leagues this year, come down for a match against Westshore.
Both teams featuring some top talent that have played internationally and at the MLR level.
