BC Rugby Weekend of September 24th 2022

BC Premier Regional Week 3 Results: UBC Topple TWU, Pride Upset UVic, CW and Westshore Draw, Seattle Edge Lomas, Burnaby Fall to Ravens, Rowers and Caps Draw

There were two draws this week, and a couple of return to form performances from UBC and Pacific Pride, the Ravens continue to roll and Seattle notch a road win.

It’s week 3 of the 6 week BC Premier Regional competition. The BC Premier league kicks off on October 29th.

On the Island the Bays, who have a bye this week, are 2-0 in the Barnard Cup competition. CW and Westshore are 1-1 and face off this weekend.

In the Coastal Cup, the Vikes are 2-0, while the Pride and TWU are both 1-1, UBC are 0-2. Vikes host the Pride while UBC hope for their first win as they host TWU.

On the mainland, the Ravens are 2-0 but have struggled to find numbers for a Div 1 (Reserve) side. Seattle, Capilano, Burnaby, Meraloma are all 1-1. The Rowers are 0-2. Ravens visit Burnaby, Meraloma host Seattle, and Capilano visit Rowers.

UVic 26 v Pacific Pride 31 @ 14:30

The Pride redeem themselves from last week’s loss against TWU and UVic suffer their first loss in the Coastal Cup. UVic still remain on top of the Coastal Cup with a 2-1 record and 12 points, the Pride are second, also at 2-1 with 11 points. TWU at 1-2 have 7 points and UBC at 1-2 have 6 points. Next week the Pride host TWU and UBC visit UVic.

PREGAME
UVic are 2-0 in the Coastal Cup competition with wins over TWU and UBC. The Pacific Pride are 1-1, losing to TWU after an opening season win over UBC.

The Pride were missing their first string halfback pairing in their loss last weekend, they have them back this weekend with Sion Griffiths and Max Stewart. The front row is rotated den Ouden, Creighton and Steeves back in the starting rotation. Callum Botchar has been moved from #8 to second row, he’s had a quiet start to the season so far. The flankers remain the same, the hard working Melnyk and Nhanala. Matt Klimchuk gets the start at #8. The backline is the same one used in the UBC match with one variation, Jack East moves to fullback and Oliver Mackenzie to the wing.

UVic are undefeated this season. They’ve made two changes to the forwards, Denver Fatt and Merlin M’Cloud are moved to the reserves with Phoenix Moller starting at tighthead and Ayo Ogunlade starting at flanker. The backline is shaken up a bit with only #10 Gabe Casey and #13 Shane Rikley-Krindle retaining their spots. Jenner Teufel gets the start at scrum half and Ethan Smith moves to wing. Logan Martin-Feek is out of the match 23 so Andrew Eason moves from fullback to inside centre. Angus Boyd-Porter starts at fullback and Graeme Norris moves from the reserves to starting wing.

It’s a tough one to pick, the Pride will be wanting to redeem themselves after a shock loss to TWU last week. The Vikes have earned two strong wins, this might be the toughest match for them so far. How much will they miss the services of Logan Martin-Feek at second receiver? Prediction: Vikes by 1.

UBC 40 v TWU 17 @ 14:30

UBC returned with a vengeance today as they broke their winless streak in style with a +23 win over a TWU side that had toppled the Pacific Pride, a team that had put a +28 thumping on UBC in Week 1. TWU went up early with a 3-0 penalty, UBC drew even with a penalty kick of their own. UBC scored on the wing to go up 8-3 and that was the score at half-time. TWU scored first in the second half when a quick tap penalty caught the UBC defence napping, 10-8 for TWU. UBC stole a TWU lineout at the TWU 5 metre line and then crashed with the forwards to get over the line, 15-10 for UBC. UBC scored again minutes later with strong running through the centres, 22-10 for UBC. UBC took a penalty kick in front of the posts to extend their lead to 25-10. UBC scored their next try through prolonged forward attack inside the 5 metres then threw it wide when defenders had pinched in, 30-10. UBC’s next try was on a TWU miscue, a turnover ball kicked down the field, the TWU defender was isolated, tried a wild pass that was picked off for an easy 5, 37-10. UBC would add a penalty and TWU a converted try for a final of 40-17.

MATCH VIDEO

PREGAME
TWU are the surprise team of the season so far, upsetting the Pacific Pride, the Rugby Canada Academy side last week and just narrowly losing to the Vikes. The Vikes put up +16 win over UBC last week. So TWU have to go in as favourites this week, something that would have been inconceivable last season.

TWU have rotated their front row a bit with last week’s reserves Jurgeneit and Klassen getting the start. Olaniyan moves from loosehead to tighthead prop. Zubiri maintains his second row role with Josh Halladay coming off the bench to fill the other second row spot. Erik Niebuhr who was player of the match last week keeps his blindside flanker spot and is joined by Caleb van Til and Nate Schroeder in the backrow. The big change in the backline is the absence of Guiseppe du Toit.

UBC don’t seem to have the horsepower in the engine room this year, now that the Carson group have graduated and moved on to the Ravens this season. UBC also saw two recent graduates, Cali Martinez and Owain Ruttan, drafted by MLR teams. UBC make one change in the tight five with Payton Teneycke getting the start at tighthead. There’s one change in the loose forwards with Thomas Foote starting at #8. The #10 spot is returned to Max Abercrombie with James Biss moving to the wing. The McMullin brothers, Talon and Takoda, start in the centres together for the first time this season. Pablo Palero starts on the wing.

Can UBC raise their game and avert what looks to be another historic win for a rejuvenated TWU side? We’ll see but on current results TWU get the nod. Prediction: TWU by 3.

Castaway Wanderers 24 v Westshore 24 @ 14:30

One of two draws this week, an unusual occurrence. The result puts both CW and Westshore at 0-1-1 records and 3 points in the Barnard Cup, while the Bays are 2-0 with 9 points. Next week the Bays visit CW, Westshore have a bye.

PREGAME
Both teams are 0-1 in the Barnard Cup, with JBAA boasting a 2-0 record in the competition. CW were finalists in the Premier championship last year, losing to a powerful UBC team. Westshore were winless last year. CW have to go in as favourites based on recent results although Westshore does boast a strong roster.

Westshore just narrowly lost to JBAA last week, they have a few next level players with MLR experience in the roster. Foster Dewitt, Siaki Vikilani, Quinn Ngawati are standout players. The main change in the roster is the start of Taylor MacGuire at #13 and moving Ngawati from outside to inside centre. Also veteran Matt Evans gets the start at hooker with Nathan Yue moving to the reserves.

CW have Grady Bowd back and that was a huge difference for them last season. Having a quality #10 in the roster is probably only second to a quality front row in terms of impacting the outcome of a match. CW are a different squad with Bowd in the lineup and he was missing in their loss to JBAA in the season opener. Riley Ilnicki is back in the roster and that’s the only change in the tight five. The loose forwards remain the same. Jordan Tait moves from #10 to inside centre to match up against his previous team. Ollie Nott is missing from the roster this week. Sawyer Herron gets the start at #13, he played hooker in his UVic days.

Grady Bowd likely to be the difference in the match but it’s close and a good chance for an upset. Prediction: CW by 2.

Burnaby Lake 38 v UBCOB Ravens 44 @ 14:30

We actually got one prediction right this week with a +6 prediction and a +6 win. We’ll hopefully get a mid-week match report for the details. Next week Burnaby visit Capilano and the Ravens host Meraloma.

PREGAME
This is the 3rd week in a row that the Ravens Premier Reserve match has been cancelled. Hopefully, they plan on having the numbers to field a Reserve squad by the start of the Premier season in October. This match will have extended numbers, the Ravens listing 26 and Burnaby listing 30.

The Ravens boast a strong starting XV and if they remain healthy throughout the season, should be contenders for the title come April. Their Welsh prop Tom Kaijaks is missing from the roster this week, replaced by Joe Sourisseau at tighthead. There are four Carsons in the roster with Don and Frank starting second row. Jake Ikeda comes into the roster at openside flanker. The successful halfback pairing of Ball and McLelland remains the same with Noah Bain again at centre.

For Burnaby, David Dinbandhu makes his return at #8. Tom Menzies replaces Connor McCann as starting openside flanker. The halfback pairing of McMahon and MacLaine remains the same from last week.

This could be a war of attrition with extended subs. The Ravens came out strong against the Caps, 21-0, but eventually conceded points as the subs became a factor. The Ravens are 2-0, Burnaby are 1-1. Prediction: Ravens by 6.

The match will be live streamed by Burnaby on YouTube.

Vancouver Rowing Club 20 v Capilano 20 @ 14:30

Another draw this week. Next week Caps host Burnaby and Rowers host Seattle.

PREGAME
The Caps are 1-1, a loss to Ravens in Week 1 and a win over the Lomas last week. The Rowers are 0-2 with losses to Lomas and Burnaby.

Caps make one change in the front row with Mackenzie Mills coming in as loosehead. Jack Rainer gets the start at second row. Mahyar Hosseini comes into the loose forwards with Glenn McKinnon not listed in the starting XV. Chris Robinson gets the start at #9 and an interesting switch between their two talented backline players, Mike Moloney usually fullback switches positions with Jeremy Iron who is their standout #10. Eligh Papin comes in at #13.

The Rowers are again late with their roster, so we’ll publish last week’s roster.

Based on results so far this season, and taking in form from last season, Caps go in as favourites: Prediction: Caps by 5.

Meraloma 33 v Seattle Rugby 36 @ 14:30

Seattle overcame the cross border journey to eke out a +3 win at the Loma dome. Next week Seattle visit the Rowers and the Lomas visit the Ravens.

PREGAME
Seattle are 1-1, a home win over Burnaby and an away loss to Ravens. Lomas are 1-1, a home win over Rowers and an away loss to Capilano.

Seattle have moved Kellen Gordon around the forward pack. Originally a Seattle prop who moved up to the MLR Seawolves, he played blindside flanker last week and is now giving #8 a shot. Halleluiah Tiauli moves from hooker to blindside. Alex Glover comes into the hooker position and Jakob Mathisen to tighthead prop. Jonny Reid comes back into the roster at #10 with Lui Sitama being the new face at inside centre.

The Meraloma haven’t published their roster at time of writing, we’ve posted their roster from last week.

Seattle are always a team that plays better at home, the cross border commitments at the amateur level usually puts a dent in the roster strength. Prediction: Lomas by 5.
