Report on Coaching Clinics Held at Shawnigan and TWU
It was so good to be back together.
Friday, October 22 saw a first post-Covid high school rugby gathering, as the BC Secondary Schools Rugby Union (BCSSRU) hosted coaching clinics on the province wide Professional Development day.
The purpose was two-fold. First, the BCSSRU wished to acknowledge all the coaches who give tirelessly of their time and expertise, especially as rugby at all levels across Canada looks to rebuild after a twenty-month hiatus.
Secondly, the clinics provided the opportunity to reintroduce key teaching concepts, through skills and drills, as well as investigate new trends in the game.
In cold and rainy weather, the clinics took place on both Vancouver Island and the Lower Mainland. At Shawnigan Lake School, Tim Murdy, Jeff Williams (Canada U20 head coach), and the rest of its extremely capable school staff were joined by Robin Macdowell to put some 25 coaches through their paces. At Trinity Western University (TWU) in Langley, former Canada star Adam Kleeburger joined Dave Chambers in presenting to a similar number.
The BCSSRU, under the leadership of Commissioner Walter van Halst, paid tribute to the coaches who volunteered to present at and attend the clinics, as well as to both Shawnigan and TWU for making available their facilities and equipment. The Union looks forward to holding similar events in the future as high school rugby looks to regain its footing on the provincial school sporting landscape.
