Who Are the Top Canadian Rugby “Influencers” on Social Media

Influencer, it’s a term that’s taken on new meaning over the last decade, even the dictionaries have included the new twist, “a person with the ability to influence potential buyers of a product or service by promoting or recommending the items on social media.” Instagram and Tik Tok are probably the most talked about social media platforms among the younger generations. In this article we look at Instagram numbers.

If you’ve been following the mainstream rugby media you’ve probably heard of Ilona Maher, the USA rugby player who has become the most followed rugby personality on social media. Her Instagram follower numbers have hit 4.7 million, even World Rugby is lauding her accomplishments in spreading awareness of rugby.

We thought we’d take a look at Canadian sports personalities, specifically rugby players, and see what their numbers are like and who is leading the pack. Our very informal process came to the following conclusion, Piper Logan is the most followed Canadian rugby player with 17.5K followers on Instagram and Matt Oworu is the most followed male rugby player with almost 10K. Feel free to post updates in the comments section if we’ve overlooked someone.

Hockey, to no surprise, seems to show the best numbers for Canadian sports personalities. Connor McDavid has 1.2M followers on Instagram, Sarah Nurse 136K. Christine Sinclair is wildly popular in the Canadian media and she has 112K. Jamie Cudmore may be up there for former players at 16.4K, Tyler Ardron has about 5K. The Olympic Silver medal winning team, by no surprise, have many players at the 9K to 10K figure, including Olivia Apps, Charity Williams, Krissy Scurfield, Chloe Daniels. Heather Moyse, who is in the World Rugby Hall of Fame, and a famous athlete outside of rugby has 8.6K and Sophie de Goede, maybe the most well known XVs player in Canada, has 8K.
