Editorial – January 2025

Thoughts for the New Year: Where’s the Next Taylor Paris – Senior Cap in 7s at 17; Senior Cap in XVs at 18 and Canada U20 Rosters from 2012 to 2024

I was thinking on January 1st I’d write an article about what I hoped for in 2025 for Canadian rugby. Obviously the women to do well at the World Cup in England and the men in the World Cup qualifiers but my thoughts turned to the U20 men, that’s where I really was hoping we would see some improvements in 2025. I don’t know what Rugby Canada and their high performance director, Stephen Aboud, have planned for them.

I came across an old article I had written in 2020, the 1st year the JWRT was cancelled due to COVID, the tournament wouldn’t return until 2023. The article listed all the Canada U20 teams going back to 2012 and it also included a link to a World Rugby article that listed the most senior capped graduates of the Tier 2 JWRT tournament by year. There were a couple of Canadian players mentioned Lucas Rumball and Djustice Sears-Duru. Lucas Rumball was the most capped from the class of JWRT 2015 when that article was written in 2020, Djustice Sears-Duru was the most capped from the class of JWRT 2013. After that, from 2016 to 2019, the most capped players came from Spain and Portugal.

I re-posted that article below but I’ve added the Canada rosters from 2021 (a camp), 2022 (Canada Conference tournament), 2023 (no JWRT, loss to USA), 2024 (no JWRT, loss to USA), so now the article includes Canada U20 rosters from 2012 to 2024.

My thinking was, how many of these players are coming into the senior system and earning caps? How many Lucas Rumball, Djustice Sears-Duru are coming through the U20 system? Then I thought of Taylor Paris, he earned his senior cap in XVs at 18, in 7s at 17, where’s the next Taylor Paris? I remember I was at the 2010 Vegas 7s, Taylor was 17, let that sink in, he was playing with Nathan Hirayama, Phil Mack, Conor Trainor, Sean White and he was standing out. I wrote in my live coverage, “Taylor Paris scores a great solo try, this kid is the danger man for Canada, great moves, good speed and a lot of confidence. He’s 17, we need to find more of that calibre.” That was against Fiji, he was scoring solo tries for Canada against Fiji at 17 on the world stage.

I had already seen Taylor Paris play locally in the BC Premier before Vegas, he had moved out from Ontario to play in the BC Premier. That was the era when it was normal to move out to play winter rugby in the BC Premier if you wanted to make the national team, unless you were already playing pro. In the 2011 World Cup, 28 of the 30 Canadian players had played in the BC Premier at some point in time. The list is below.

Hubert Buydens – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Aaron Carpenter – Cowichan RFC + James Bay Athletic Association
Jamie Cudmore – Capilano RFC
Nanyak Dala – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Brian Erichsen – Meraloma RFC
Matt Evans – Cowichan RFC
Ed Fairhurst – University of Victoria Vikes RFC + UBCOB Ravens RFC
Scott Franklin – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Ryan Hamilton – University of Victoria Vikes RFC + Capilano RFC
Ciaran Hearn – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Nathan Hirayama – Richmond RFC + University of Victoria Vikes RFC
Tyler Hotson – UBCOB Ravens RFC
Adam Kleeberger – Bayside Sharks RFC + University of Victoria RFC
Jeremy Kyne – University of Victoria Vikes RFC
Jamie Mackenzie – University of Victoria Vikes RFC
Phil Mackenzie – University of Victoria Vikes RFC
Jason Marshall – Capilano RFC + James Bay Athletic Association
Ander Monro – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Chauncey O’Toole – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Taylor Paris – James Bay Athletic Association
Pat Riordan – Burnaby Lake RFC + University of Victoria Vikes RFC
Mike Scholz – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Jebb Sinclair – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Ryan Smith – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Andrew Tiedemann – University of Victoria Vikes RFC
DTH Van der Merwe – James Bay Athletic Association
Frank Walsh – Castaway Wanderers RFC
Sean White – James Bay Athletic Association

So I guess that’s my early new year’s wish, we get more young Canadian elite players moving out west to test themselves in the BC Premier. Play against the Pacific Pride who are coached by the national U20 coach, impress him and you’ll get noticed. Play against UVic and UBC where a lot of U20 players are selected. There’s 3 months left in the season, basically February to April, so time to get signed up with a club. If you’re a coach or player and you need contacts at a club, email me, editor@bcrugbynews.com and I’ll put you in touch with people at the clubs out here.

ARTICLE FROM JULY 2020

U20 JWRT by the Numbers – Which Tier 2 Country is Best at Promoting U20 Players to Senior Caps, Also Canada U20 Team Lists 2012 to 2019

World Rugby came out with an interesting document, a summary of the U20 JWRT.

World Rugby Summary of U20 JWRT

We took a look at the most capped players (senior caps) from each JWRT. Only 2 Canadian players showed up on the list, Lucas Rumball (35 caps) who played in the 2014 and 2015 JWRT and Djustice Sears-Duru (52 caps) who played in the 2013 JWRT. Counting up the players from other countries who topped the list, Portugal had 11 players, Uruguay had 7 players, Georgia had 6 players, Namibia had 4 players, Russia had 3 players.

The question comes up, is Canada too slow in developing their U20 players to senior caps or giving their U20 players a chance to prove themselves at the senior level. Portugal, Uruguay and Georgia have strong numbers in progressing their players.

Here are some stats taken from the document.

Canada have been in the JWRT since 2010 only missing 2016. They were in the Tier 1 competition before 2010.

2019

The most capped graduates from the 2019 JWRT were all from Portugal, Jose Madeira 6 caps, David Costa 3 caps, Pedro Lucas 3 caps. Will Percillier was the top scorer at the 2019 JWRT but only has two caps to date.
