UBC to Host 2025 U SPORTS Women’s Rugby Championship: 2024 Canada West Updates
UBC will host the 2025 U Sports Women’s Rugby Championship, the media release is posted below. The 2024 championships are to be hosted by UPEI in Charlottetown, PEI from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3.
The Canada West representatives will be decided at the 2024 Canada West Championships in Calgary, with semifinal action on Oct. 17 and the bronze/gold medal games set for Oct. 20. โ
Currently UVic sit top of the Canada West standings having upset UBC in their first match, the rematch takes place at UBC this weekend.
The latest national rankings have Queen’s as #1, Ottawa #2, UVic #3, last year’s champions Laval #4, Guelph #5, UBC #6, Acadia #7, Western #8, Concordia #9, Brock #10.
UBC have won the last 4 Canada West titles but have yet to win a national championship. The University of Alberta have won 10 Canada West titles and 6 national titles, the University of Lethbridge have won 6 Canada West titles and 3 national championships, the two Alberta based universities dominated the women’s Canada West competition between 1999 and 2014 and between them won 9 national titles during that time.

The best university women’s rugby teams are coming to Vancouver as the University of British Columbia (UBC) hosts the 2025 U SPORTS women’s rugby championship.
This will be the second time UBC will be the site of a U SPORTS national university women’s rugby tournament, having previously hosted in 2009. The 11-game tournament will be contested October 29 โ November 2, 2025, at Thunderbird Stadium.
“U SPORTS is excited to bring our national women’s rugby championship back to Vancouver, said U SPORTS Chief Executive Officer Pierre Arsenault. “Vancouver is a hub for major rugby events, and with UBC’s track record of hosting outstanding U SPORTS championships, we know that teams and fans will have an outstanding time in the Lower Mainland come 2025.”
The 27th edition of the U SPORTS championship features eight teams, including the host Thunderbirds, battling out over five days to hoist the Monilex Trophy, first awarded in 1998, named in honour of Monty Heald and Lexie Tynan, the founding distributors of Gilbert products in Canada. Gilbert is the official ball of the U SPORTS rugby championship.
The 2024 Cavendish Farms U SPORTS women’s rugby championship begins October 30 in Charlottetown, PEI. All games will be broadcast on CBC/Radio-Canada Sports digital platforms. Tickets for this year’s championship are available for purchase at USPORTSTickets.ca.
