The Women’s World Cup has progressed as many predicted, the final four being England, NZ, Canada, France, the top four ranked teams. The semis will see England v Canada and then NZ v France. England are considered heavy favourites to claim the title, they’re on a 29 game winning streak in international rugby.

Canada Defeat Italy to Remain Top Pool B and Second Seed in Tournament

Canada earned an important bonus point in the match against Italy which currently puts them as the second seed in the tournament as England managed a narrow win over France with no bonus point. Currently NZ are top seed with 10 points and a +68 point differential, Canada are at 10 points but with a +46 point differential, England are at 9 points with a +71 differential. If Canada can get a bonus point win against USA, they would retain the 2nd seed.

Canada Defeat Japan 41-5 in Round One of Rugby World Cup: Face Italy in Round Two

The Canadian forwards were dominant and paved the way for victory. Canada scored 6 tries, 3 of them directly by the forwards, 2 by scrum half Brianna Miller working off the forwards effort and 1 by the backs from a blocked kick. Canada weren’t able to generate an attack out wide which will be a concern in the upcoming matches against Italy and USA. Handling errors were also an issue with stats showing 15 lost turnovers in the opposition half.

RWC Day 2 Recap with Stats and Video Highlights

Canada got the job done on Day 2 with a bonus point win in their first match. They definitely left points off the scoreboard with handling errors and a lack of finishing but coaches and players will be happy with the opening win and look on improving against Italy. Italy upset USA to go second in Pool B and Wales needed a penalty kick at the whistle to defeat Scotland.

Rugby Canada Announce 32 Player Squad for Women’s Rugby World Cup in New Zealand – First Match October 9th vs Japan

Coach Kevin Rouet has named his 32 player roster going to NZ for the World Cup. One of the most notable omissions is Pam Buisa, a player who was making headlines during the UK tour of November 2021 under coach Sandro Fiorino. She came off the disappointing Olympic 7s performance that summer but shone as an impact player in the XVs tour that fall. That earned her a starting flanker role in the June 2022 tour to NZ where she started at both blindside and openside over the three games against USA, Australia and NZ. She had a quiet tournament and in the July home tests against Italy and Wales, coach Rouet went with Fabiola Forteza, Karen Paquin, Courtney Holtkamp, Sara Svoboda, Gabrielle Senft in the flanker roles. He must have liked what he saw as all those players made the cut, Buisa is on the non-travelling reserves.

Canada Defeat Wales 31-3 in Warm-Up Match for World Cup in October: MATCH VIDEO

Canada grew into the game as Wales put them under pressure early and took an early 3-0 lead. Canada took over the rest of the match except for the last 10 minutes as substitutions seemed to interupt Canada’s dominance and Wales started to press again. The Canadian defence held firm and the final was 31-3.
