National 7s Team Updates November 2024

Men at Ran 7s in Trinidad November 22-24; Women in Portland on November 17th

The men’s and women’s 7s teams are on different paths this coming season, the women are preparing for the World Rugby 7s series which kicks off in Dubai on November 29th. Canada are in a pool with NZ, Japan and Brazil. As a buildup to the series the women are crossing the border on November 17th for a day of 7s in Portland, Oregon vs the USA and a PR7s all-star team. The press release for that is posted below.

The men are in a different situation, they were ousted from the World Rugby 7s series last season due to finishing out of the top 12 and have to win their way back. First they have to qualify for the World Rugby Tier 2 Challenger Series and then, if they qualify, they have to finish in the top 4 of that series to make it to the promotion/relegation tournament. Then, if they make it to the promotion/relegation tournament, they have to finish in the top 4 of that tournament to make it back on the World Rugby 7s series.

The first step for the men is in Trinidad this month at the Ran 7s, they have to win that tournament to make it on the Challenger Series. Last year Mexico won the tournament and represented RAN in the Challenger Series, they finished last and didn’t go further. Canada will be competing with Jamaica, Barbados, Mexico, Bermuda, Cayman Islands, Trinidad & Tobago and Guyana for the one spot on the Challenger Series. The press release for that is posted below.

The gap between countries at the Tier 2 level is getting smaller and Canada can’t take it for granted they’ll win based on last season’s performance. Another worry may be the number of 7s players who have signed with the MLR and won’t be available for the Challenger Series, if Canada qualifies. Matt Oworu, Cooper Coats, Brock Webster, Josiah Morra, Noah Flesch have all signed MLR contracts for next year.

Premier Rugby Sevens (PR7s) today announced that Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team, silver medalists in the Paris 2024 Olympics, will join the PR7s All-Star Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 17 at Providence Park in Portland. The addition sets up a highly anticipated matchup between the silver medal-winning Canadian women and the bronze medal-winning USA women’s team.

“Welcoming the Canadian women’s team to the PR7s All-Star Tournament brings an exciting new dimension to this highly anticipated event,” said Owen Scannell, CEO and founder of Premier Rugby Sevens. “We’re thrilled to partner with both USA Rugby and Rugby Canada to celebrate Olympic medalists that captivated fans during the Paris Olympics.”

The historic event marks Team USA’s first rugby competition on home soil since Paris. The U.S. and Canadian women, in addition to the U.S. men, will compete against their counterparts from the PR7s All-Stars, which features past Olympians, legends of the game, and other top players. As the highest professional level of rugby sevens in the United States, PR7s had 43 men and women athletes compete in the Paris Olympics across 11 teams worldwide.

“We are looking forward to participating in the PR7s All-Star Tournament against the USA and in preparation for the upcoming 2026 HSBC SVNS series,” said Jocelyn Barrieau, Head Coach of Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team. “We will face some great competition in what will be our program’s first tournament post-Paris 2024. Everyone is excited to get on the pitch and continue to show how women’s rugby is growing in North America.”

The Olympic rugby matches this past summer captivated fans worldwide, with sold-out crowds of over 66,000 in Paris. Canada’s silver medal marked a historic achievement, spotlighting the talent and dedication of its women’s team and reinforcing North America’s position in the global rugby landscape.
