from Rugby Canada

Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team Head Coach Kevin Rouet has announced the 30 players who will make up Canada’s squad for the 2023 World Rugby Pacific Four Series matches in Ottawa.

Final selections were made following a pre-tournament camp of 40 players at Oakfield Rugby Park in Perth that included a Canada Day scrimmage with the USA. The team has now relocated to Ottawa for their final week of preparation ahead of playing the New Zealand Black Ferns on Saturday July 8.

Led by captain Sophie de Goede and vice-captain Justine Pelletier, the team includes four standout U Sports players who have been named to their first senior national team squad: Ashlynn Smith (University of Calgary), Claire Gallagher (University of Ottawa), Mya Brubacher (Queen’s University), and Sara Cline (University of Lethbridge). Canada West 2022 Player of the Year Shoshanah Seumanutafa (University of British Columbia) returns, and could play in her second cap, having made her debut in 2019.

This also marks the first senior 15s selection for Florence Symonds, one of seven players on the roster who also played for Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team this season. Co-captain of Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team Olivia Apps, who was called on to support Canada at the 2021 Rugby World Cup (played in 2022), could earn her first cap in Ottawa as well.

Nine provinces are represented, and three players have connections to the host city of Ottawa. Alexandria Ellis hails from Canada’s capital and has played for Barrhaven Scottish Rugby Football Club and the University of Ottawa. Madison Grant and Claire Gallagher, two former RSEQ Rookie of the Year recipients, have also played for the Gee-Gees.

Twenty-two players on the squad have Rugby World Cup experience, and several competed in championship finals overseas in the month of June. Fabiola Forteza and Justine Pelletier won the Elite 1 Féminine Title with Stade Bordelais, while Daleaka Menin, Emily Tuttosi and Gabrielle Senft played in the Premier 15s final with Exeter, losing to Gloucester.

“We had a very good six days of training in Perth, and all 40 pre-camp players put in a lot of work to ensure that we are ready and prepared to face New Zealand and Australia”, said Rouet. “The Lanark Highlanders welcomed us with open arms, and we could feel the support from the local community and the crowd that came out to our scrimmage with the USA on Canada Day. This past week has raised our excitement for our upcoming matches even more, and I am looking forward to working with this roster over the next two weeks in Ottawa.”

Canada plays New Zealand on July 8 and Australia on July 14 at TD Place. Tickets start at just $20 and can be purchased at?rugby.ca/en/tickets. Questions regarding ticket purchases can be directed to tickets@rugby.ca.

*Coach Kevin Rouet Names 40 Players for Pacific Four Series Pre-Tournament Camp*

Kevin Rouet named 40 players to take part in a pre-tournament camp in Perth, an hour outside of Ottawa. There were a number of regional selection competitions held across the country and in BC there was a Blue v Gold series, won by Blue. Six players from BC Gold were named to the camp along with one non-travelling reserve, five players from BC Blue were named to the camp along with four non-travelling reserves.

There’s some interesting names in the camp, Caroline Crossley is back in the mix after dropping out of the national team picture following the blowup of the women’s 7s program. She’s also listed with the Loonies team in the PR7s competition. On the non-travelling list is Magali Harvey who featured in the 2014 World Cup and was recently playing for Queen’s in the 2022 University championships.

There are seven UBC players in the camp and one non-travelling reserves, there’s one UVic player in camp and three in the non-travelling reserves. Overall there are 14 players from BC in camp.

from Rugby Canada

As preparations continue for Canada’s matches against New Zealand and Australia in Ottawa this July, Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team’s Head Coach Kevin Rouet has named 40 players for a pre-tournament camp that will be held in Perth, Ontario over June 26 to July 1.

With representation from nine provinces, the squad includes 22 players from Canada’s 2021 Rugby World Cup (played in 2022) roster and 20 players from Canada’s tour in Spain earlier this year, which was highlighted by a 50-17 win over the USA in the first match of the 2023 World Rugby Pacific Four Series.

Joining the camp straight off the Premier 15s final in England will be Emily Tuttosi, Daleaka Menin and Gabrielle Senft, who are playing for the championship title with Exeter for the second season in a row.

Amongst the 40 are seven players who competed with Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team on the 2023 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series: Alysha Corrigan, Fancy Bermudez, Florence Symonds, Madison Grant, Olivia Apps, Sabrina Poulin, and Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team captain Sophie de Goede.

The Pacific Four Series host city of Ottawa is well represented; Alexandria Ellis grew up playing with Barrhaven Scottish Rugby Football Club before playing for the University of Ottawa with Madison Grant. Claire Gallagher and Talia Hennessy, two possible debutants, are current All-Stars with the uOttawa Gee-Gees.

Other rookies include University of British Columbia standouts Jordan McLeod, Rachel Smith, Rori Wood, Savannah Bauder and Shoshanah Seumanutafa. Fellow outstanding U Sports players Ashlynn Smith (University of Calgary), Mya Brubacher (Queen’s University) and Sara Cline (University of Lethbridge) will also look to earn their first international caps.

Aiding in selection was a series of regional competitions, organized by provincial unions, that took place across Canada from April to June. Twenty-six of the selected 40, along with 14 of the non-travelling reserves, competed on teams representing BC, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, PEI and Nova Scotia.

“Since returning from our tour in Spain earlier this year, we have continued collaborating with universities, clubs, provincial unions, and Canada’s Women’s Sevens Team to build the squad that will take on New Zealand and Australia at TD Place,” said Kevin Rouet, Head Coach of Canada’s Women’s Rugby Team. “Together these 40 players bring a wealth of experience, skill and passion, and are excited about the prospect of playing in front of a loud home crowd on Canadian soil. Our week in Perth will be a very important component of our preparations as we eagerly await kick-off against the Black Ferns on July 8.”

The pre-tournament camp will conclude with a Canada Day training scrimmage with the United States, consisting of three 30-minute periods. Held at Oakfield Rugby Park, home of the Lanark Highlanders Rugby Football Club, the scrimmage will be open to the public, with kick-off at 1:00 p.m. ET and a community BBQ to follow. Canada’s official 30-player roster for the final rounds of the Pacific Four Series will be declared following July 1.

Canada plays New Zealand on July 8 and Australia on July 14 at TD Place. Tickets start at just $20 and can be purchased at rugby.ca/en/tickets. Questions regarding ticket purchases can be directed to tickets@rugby.ca.
