Rugby 7s World Cup – September 2022

Canada Men Finish 13th with Win Over Chile; Canada Women Finish 6th Suffer Shock 53-0 Loss to Fiji: MATCH VIDEOS

The Canadian men finished 13th out of 24 teams, the women finished 6th out of 16 teams.

Fiji won the men’s tournament defeating NZ and Australia won the women’s tournament defeating NZ.

For the men’s program the highlight was their first half against Wales in the 13th/16th semi-final when they scored 26 unanswered points, the low point was their loss to Uruguay in the 9th place quarter-final. Uruguay will be new to the series next season and Canada will have to up their game to stay out of the relegation zone in 2022-23.

For the women their highlight was their 5th/8th semi-final win over England, the low point was the 53-0 thrashing they received in the 5th/6th game at the hands of Fiji. Coach Jack Hanratty will have to rethink his passive defensive strategy and find a few aggressive, physical athletes in the mold of Kelly Russell and Jen Kish if Canada are to vie for a top four spot and automatic Olympic qualification in 2024.

Canada men lost to Uruguay in the Challenge quarter-finals, that puts them in the 13th to 16th competition. They defeated Wales 33-19 in that semi while Chile beat Scotland in their semi, so Canada will face Chile on Day 3 to decide 13th and 14th place. The difference in the Uruguay match was Uruguay’s defensive work rate, something that’s becoming a trademark of Uruguay rugby in both XVs and 7s. Canada played their best half of rugby in the first half of the Wales match when they went up 26-0. The Cup semis have NZ v Ireland and Fiji v Australia.

The women lost to USA 10-7 in their Cup QF, they’ll face England in the 5th place semi-final. Ireland play Fiji in the other 5th place semi. The Cup semis are NZ v France and Australia v USA.

The men’s and women’s rugby 7s World Cup kicks off Friday September 9th in Cape Town, South Africa.

The men’s competition has a pre-round of 16, the winners advance to the 16 team tournament for the Cup, the losers go to the 8 team Bowl competition. Canada are in the pre-round of 16 and need to defeat Zimbabwe to advance to the 16 team Cup competition. If they do win they’ll face France and the winner of that will go to the 8 team Championship round, the loser to the 8 team Challenge round. The kickoff for the Zimbabwe game is 9:07 am local time on Friday (0:07am PT).

The women’s competition is only 16 teams compared to 24 for the men so there is no pre-round and all teams start in the Cup competition. Canada face China at 12:55 pm local time (3:55am PT), if they win they’ll advance to play the winner of USA v Poland in the final round of 8 on Saturday.

The rosters are largely unchanged from the previous tournament, the women are sending 13 players with Olivia De Couvreur listed as the Travelling Reserve. There’s still no sign of Charity Williams, she appears to still be with the program but no word if she’s carrying a long term injury or just not selected. The men only have 12 players listed with no Travelling Reserve. Matt Oworu returns from injury which means Josh Thiel is dropped from the 12 person roster.

Canada’s Senior Women’s and Men’s Sevens rosters for the Rugby World Cup Sevens in South Africa have been named by Head Coaches Jack Hanratty and Henry Paul.

Taking place from September 9-11 at the iconic Cape Town Stadium, the Rugby World Cup Sevens 2022 will be the eighth iteration of the event which was first hosted in 1993 for the Men and 2009 for the Women.

Canada’s Women’s Sevens roster sees Alberta’s Piper Logan retain her place having enjoyed an eye-opening debut at the Commonwealth Games in July. Her performances in Birmingham earned her a spot in the World Rugby Sevens Women’s Dream Team. Breanne Nicholas and Olivia Apps will co-captain the side.

“We are all really looking forward to touching down in South Africa for the Rugby World Cup Sevens,” said Hanratty, who will be taking charge of the Women’s Sevens team for the first time since his appointment as full-time Head Coach. “We have two pinnacles of Rugby Sevens and the World Cup is one of them. We cannot wait to test ourselves against the very best teams in the world on the biggest of stages.”

The Men’s team sees just one change from the roster which went to last weekend’s HSBC LA Sevens in California. Matthew Oworu, who has recovered from the minor injury which kept him out of the last World Series event of the season, replaces Cooper Coats, who picked up a knock in LA. Phil Berna will captain the Men’s team.

“There’s no greater honor than representing your country at a World Cup,” Men’s Sevens Head Coach Paul commented. “All of the players are eager to get the action underway in South Africa. This is a real opportunity for us to end the season on a high note and make some waves in the biggest and most important event of the year.”
