BC High School 7s Rugby Provincials Start Thursday: Rankings and Links to Schedule and Live Stream

The provincials for both rugby XVs and 7s takes place this week at Abbotsford’s Exhibition Stadium. The XVs information is here. Schools have to choose between XVs or 7s at the beginning of the season. Last year Belmont won the Boys 7s and Queen Margaret won the Girls 7s. Belmont are back to defend their title but Queen Margaret didn’t make the provincials this year.

Gidgalang Kuuyas Naay from Haida Gwaii have qualified both their boys and girls teams, quite an accomplishment for a small school. Belmont also have both girls and boys teams qualified as does Langley, Elgin Park and Peter Skene Ogden from 100 Mile House.

The pools are listed below. Here are some useful links to get updates during the tournament, we’ll provide a summary at the end of each day.

  1. Wonderful to see Gidgalang Kuuyas Naay is into this. This might have its roots over a decade ago, when Rick Bourne, who owns a great fishing lodge on Haida Gwaii convinced a number of rugby players, active and retired, to come up and introduce the sport there for these folks, most of whom were unaware of rugby. The group included Jamie Cudmore and Gareth Reese and others. They were amazing and drew out the few people there who did know rugby from experience off-island to help introduce the sport to kids. Would love to see rugby join basketball as a major sport of Haida Nation… and others!
