Canada won the RAN 7s without giving up a point but what’s next on the Challenger Series? Canada have to finish top four in that series to get a place at the promotion/relegation tournament, when again the top four move up to the Tier 1 World Rugby Series.
It’s Week 7 of the men’s Premier with the Ravens remaining the only undefeated team. The women’s Premier features the #1 and #2 teams in a matchup.
On a miserably cold, rainy day at Jericho on a spongy, wet pitch two of the best teams in the competition played to a standstill with the rugby gods intervening near the end to favour the home team on the 50th anniversary weekend of the club. Each team scored a single try and set out an equally strong defence leaving the pundits no wiser as to which may be the better squad. Perhaps a playoff rematch in the spring will answer that question.
The MLR have announced their 2025 schedule that runs from the weekend of Feb 15/16 to June 7/8 with the playoffs to follow. The league now has 11 teams with Dallas Jackals dropping out this season. There will be 5 Western Conference teams, Seattle, San Diego, LA, Utah and Houston and 6 Eastern Conference teams, New England, DC, Miami, New Orleans, Chicago and Charlotte in the East.

This wasn’t an outcome anyone predicted. The first time a University outside of BC wins the national title and it’s an engineering school in Montreal, fairly unknown in the Canadian rugby world. ETS is on the rugby map now and they’re hosting the championship next year.
Week 6 kicks off in the men’s Premier league with the Ravens the only undefeated team, there are only 3 games with the university sides taking part in the Canadian University Championships. The women’s Premier features 2 games with Seattle visiting CW and Westshore visiting UBC.
Canada put in a better effort this week against Romania, but still fell 35-27. It’s the 5th straight loss for Canada in 2024 and renews calls for a coaching change. Canada are projected to fall to 23rd in the world rankings when the ranking are released on Monday.
Canada are expected to win the Rugby Americas North 7s tournament, without USA present. The win is essential to begin the journey back to the World Rugby 7s Series. The winner of the RAN 7s will get on the Challenger 7s series and a top 4 finish there will get them in the promotion/relegation tournament at the end of the year.
