Canada’s men’s 7s team have ended their season with a 5th place finish in São Paulo. They finished 6th overall in the six team SVNS 2 series, the top four teams advance to the SVNS Championship series. The teams advancing are USA, Germany, Kenya, Uruguay. Canada only won two matches over 15 games in the three tournament series.
Week 17 wrapped up and there’s one weekend left in the regular season. The Ravens look certain to finish top of the table and UBC 2nd. Westshore have a lock on 3rd while Caps and Bays are still in a battle for 4th/5th and home field in a possible rematch. Vikes and Burnaby now tied in 6th/7th but Vikes have one extra make-up match weekend. Lots to be decided after the Easter break. In women’s Premier the Thunderbirds are hitting their stride as the playoffs loom and they look to defend their title.
How would Rugby Canada divide up the talent for conflicting XVs and 7s commitments in April? We’ve now got the answer. It looks like 7s is the more immediate priority and that XVs is being used to introduce new players at the beginning of the world cup cycle. The 7s team have captured key players like Olivia Apps, Fancy Bermudez, Sabrina Poulin and Alysha Corrigan who would be certain selections on the XVs squad. The XVs team have brought in 8 debutantes.
Canada U21 women have finished their tour in style with a 59-21 win over England. They defeated Ireland 48-24 and the British Army 58-10. A composite 165-55 scoreline, not bad for a team of Canadian university students playing teams (Ireland, England) preparing for the U21 Six Nations in April.

The BCRU have announced their Provincial coaches for the U17 and U19 teams heading to Ontario this summer. All four teams will head to Ontario from July 18-26. The U19 Men and Women will compete in the Canadian Rugby Championships. The U17 Boys and Girls will compete the O’Neill’s Challenge Cup which was started last year as a Ontario v BC competition at the U17 level. Also the regional PRCs will take place July 4th and 5th in Abbotsford for U15, U17, U19 regional teams.

There were eleven Canadian players in action this past weekend, missing were key players Alex Tessier, Sabrina Poulin, Julia Schell, Chloe Daniels. The Saracens with seven Canadian players in the roster had a bye week. Scoring tries this week were Pam Buisa, Daleaka Menin, Fancy Bermudez. There’s one more round before the April break for international matches.
Canada finished 5th in Montevideo, defeating Belgium, their first win in the SVNS 2 series in ten attempts. That places them in a 5th/6th place tie with Belgium in the SVNS 2 series with one tournament left next weekend. That result effectively eliminates them from contention of promotion to the SVNS Championship series beginning in April in Hong Kong. Canada have 22 series points, tied with Belgium, Uruguay in 4th place have 28 points, that means Canada would have to win the São Paulo tournament and hope Uruguay finishes no higher than 4th. In that scenario Canada and Uruguay would be tied at 42 points and go to tie breaking formulas. USA and Germany are tied at 38 points, Kenya in 3rd have 34 points, all three teams look certain to advance.
It’s Week 16 with most teams just having two more matches after this weekend, the exception UVic who will have three more matches. CW defaulted/conceded their match to Ravens due to injuries. We’ll see how the BCRU classifies this as it determines how many points are awarded to the Ravens, at the present it just says the match is “Cancelled”. UBC, Burnaby, UVic, Westshore were all winners this weekend. UBC and Westshore remained tied for 2nd/3rd behind Ravens. Burnaby and UVic continue battle for final playoff spot with head to head matchup next weekend.
The wet weather has predictably changed some matches this weekend as municipalities, which own most of the rugby playing venues, are becoming increasingly more protective of the fields. It’s good to see some clubs being proactive in finding alternative venues. Westshore have moved their match vs JBAA to Starlight Stadium, the match is now at 7pm under the lights on Saturday. Other changes we’ve noted as of Thursday evening according to the BC Rugby fixture page, the UBC v Capilano men’s Premier match is now at Klahanie.
