20th Annual Hatch Shield Rugby Game – Friday, May 10 – 4:30 Kick-off – Klahanie Park

The Hatch Shield game is played annually between West Vancouver rivals Collingwood School and Rockridge Secondary. The Shield is named after Roger Hatch who not only coached rugby at Collingwood for 29 years but is also a legend at the Capilano Rugby Club where he coached the junior program for years before moving on to coaching the senior men’s top teams.

The first Hatch Shield game was played in 2003. Collingwood currently holds a 10-9 lead in the series, which features two of the top AA rugby programs in the province. Collingwood has won 10 BC AA titles with Rockridge right behind with six provincial championships.

Roger retired from teaching and coaching in 2014, but still attends Collingwood games and is always on hand to present the Hatch Shield to the winning team each year.

BC School Sports Rankings

BC School Sports has started posting rankings, currently just for 7s, with the promise of the XVs rankings coming soon. What are your thoughts on the 7s rankings, feel free to leave your rankings in the comments section with a note on why you’ve ranked the teams differently. Note that school programs can only enter XVs or 7s, but not both, so top XVs programs aren’t participating in 7s.
