BC Rugby Weekend of April 5th 2025

BC Premier Final Make-Up Weekend Results: Lomas Defeat Burnaby, UBC Edge CW, Vikes Default to Caps

It was the final weekend before the playoffs and now the playoff picture is set. In a surprising turn, UVic defaulted their match at Capilano and we understand Caps will be awarded 5 points. The quarter-finals look to be CW @ Lomas and Caps @ Westshore with Ravens and UBC getting a first round bye. We’ll wait for any final BCRU ruling on the UVic default before calling it official.

Capilano v University Of Victoria @ 14:30
Venue: Klahanie Park
Comment: Cancelled

The BCRU just has the game labelled as cancelled but we’ve heard that UVic defaulted, and Capilano are getting awarded 5 points. That would put Caps at 30 points for 12 games, and 2.5 points per match. Klahanie is still hosting the Collingwood vs Carson Graham high school match at 12:30pm, rosters below.

High school match report

There was a full crowd out at a sunny Klahanie park to cheer on the youngsters for the lone match of the day.

Carson opened the scoring off an alert scrum pick to the blindside to make it 7-0. Collingwood answered back with 3 consecutive tries showing some good handling skills to move the ball to the wide channels making it 17-7. A long range try before half time for Carson brought it to back close 17-12 at the intermission.

The second half started with a try from Collingwood #9 Brek Ball who was active all day, making it 22-12 for Collingwood. Collingwood would continue the second half with two more tries to close out the match 34-12.

Castaway Wanderers 20 v UBC 24 @ 14:30
Referee: Derek Horton AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: Martin Thornton
Venue: Windsor Park

A good effort by CW but they just managed 1 bonus point which leaves them 6th in the standings and a visit to the Meralomas in the quarter-finals next weekend. The UBC win secures 2nd place, a bye in the quarter-finals and home field advantage against the winner of Meraloma vs CW.

PREGAME

With UVic defaulting their match to Capilano, CW now need a win, tie, or double bonus point to stay ahead of the Caps. If CW do get 2 points out of the match, they’ll be tied with Westshore and tie breaking scenarios will be considered to see who finishes 4th and 5th. If CW win then they’ll finish 4th and host Westshore. If CW lose without 2 points then they’ll finish 6th and travel to the mainland for the quarter-finals.

CW have Gradyn Bowd back, a huge boost for them. Gavin Kratz returns to loosehead prop and Dafydd Thomas returns at #8. Ethan Hager is with the national 7s team travelling to Poland, Jordan Tait comes off the bench to start at outside centre.

UBC are fully loaded with few changes, Sol Jacques is back in the roster at openside flanker. Max McGavern gets the start on the wing.

UBC haven’t lost in the new year and even drew with undefeated Ravens. CW are 3-2 in the new year. T-Birds go in as favourites. Prediction: UBC by +7.

Meraloma 50 v Burnaby Lake 17 @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Phil Webster AR2: John Eadie
Venue: Brockton Oval

A  comprehensive win by the Lomas, secures them 3rd place and a home quarter-final against CW next weekend. Burnaby complete their season in 7th place. The other quarter-final will see Westshore hosting Capilano, the winner to take on the Ravens in the semi-final.

PREGAME

If the Lomas win with a bonus point they go to 3.25 points per match, UBC are currently at 3.5 but a loss without a bonus point would put them at 3.23, so it’s still mathematically possible for the Lomas to finish 2nd but it would require UBC getting no points from their match. Burnaby are out of the playoffs.

The Lomas have some rotation from the reserves to the starting positions. They have Rory McParland back at starting fullback.

Burnaby have a number of TBD positions on the bench. They have some changes in the backline with Jacob King, Brendon McCaskie and Hayden Mulgrew getting starting roles.

The Lomas have some motivation to get the bonus point, for Burnaby the season is over and they’re playing for pride. The game is at Brockton Oval even though it’s a Lomas home game, Connaught Park seems to get shut down early for maintenance in recent seasons. Lomas clear favourites. Prediction: Lomas by +8.

  1. Yes, this is really poor form by U-Vic,. Caps had the high school game between Carsen Graham and Collingwood as a curtain raiser and we hoped to have a full house for both of these two games. The youngsters would have a game in prime time and they would get to show their skills to a large Capilano crowd. This would have been followed by an exciting Premier match and give the youngsters a taste of senior rugby, To say that we are disappointed is an understatement the $1000 fine of which the Caps are supposed to get $900 doesn’t cut it. If U-Vic can’t play a full schedule they should be dropped out of the league! Shame!!! John Langley

  2. This was a strange decision from U Vic, given the curtain raiser from two high school teams where graduating high school athletes with a rugby interest could be considering attending UVic. It was a chance for UVic coaches to see those high school players in action and perhaps encourage attendance at U Vic. Yes, John, inferior form from U Vic. Hard to fathom.
