Burnaby Lake 26 @ James Bay AA 21 – MacDonald Park

The legend of the downhill slope at MacDonald Park continues. The Bays were ahead 18-7 when they had the slope in the first half, Burnaby were 19-3 in the 2nd half with the slope. 37 points scored at one end, 10 at the other – it could just be coincidence – yeah right. It was a great game though, the type of game that should be played in a stadium enjoyed by a few thousand spectators, not by a few hundred at a city park. Rugby is a great spectator sport and clubs need to bring in more revenue, changes they are a comin’.

I think many people thought it was a done deal at 18-7, even many of the Burnaby faithful. Evan Thomas scored two 2nd half tries and he was our MVP hoodie winner. Burnaby have a big forward pack and I think the physicality of their forwards eventually took its toll in the second half, setting the platform for the come from behind victory. These two teams look set for another battle for the title this year. Based on recent results, only CW looks strong enough to intervene. Full match reports forthcoming from JBAA and Burnaby.

Comeback try down 18-7, perfectly weighted kick to the corner, Even Thomas gathers for the try, 18-14

Winning try, flat pass from the ruck out to the wing, Evan Thomas dots it down.

PREGAME
This is the much anticipated rematch of last year’s final, and possibly a preview of this year’s final. Burnaby have one loss to Capilano while the Bays have 3 losses to date including a heavy 42-17 loss to Burnaby on the mainland in Week 1 of the BC Premier. The Bays will be missing their big unit up front, Nick Wallace who is in Uruguay with the USA Eagles. Also the 7s players John Moonlight, Phil Mack and Sean White. They do however have five players in the backline with Canada or Canada ‘A’ experience. They face a Burnaby backline that although not having the same credentials on paper, are very dangerous, the Fijian flyers in the midfield Dolesau and Gotegote are a match for any opponent in North America whether club or country. They will be facing the incumbent national team centre, Nick Blevins, along with Taylor Dalziel. This matchup alone is worth the price of admission. The supporting cast of Wilson-Ross, Meeres and Parfrey have a slight edge over their opposite numbers Thomas, Murphy and McQueen – that will be interesting to watch. Then at the all important pivot role it’s Connor Braid vs Geoff Ryan. In terms of individual performance in the backline, I’d have to give a slight edge to the home side but Burnaby have been working as a unit more effectively. It’s going to be interesting. In the forwards the Bays have brought back some top names, this is the first time that Herlaar, Meechan and Miles have suited up together this season as the loosies, at least as far as I know. That’s an impressive set of loose forwards, best they’ve put on the field this year. They go up against the equally impressive group of Kalar, Plummer and Cejvanovic. I hope the national team coach is present for this game, he should be, as there’s some real talent on display in this game. The tight five matchup should be epic and perhaps one area that Burnaby might have an advantage with Nick Wallace not present. I really don’t have a feel for who will win this match, it’s that close. The factors are Burnaby have a better record and are more consistent, the Bays are playing at home which is worth points, the Bays from 6 to 15 are putting out one of their best lineups this year. I think if the Bays tight five can match up they’ll win, if Burnaby dominate in this area they’ll win. A flip of the coin and… Prediction: Tie game

Capilano 12 @ Castaway Wanderers 52 – Windsor Park

Wow, didn’t see this one coming. What happened to the vaunted Caps defence – the one that held league leading Burnaby to single digits. I guess their weather is mud and rain, they don’t seem to fare so well on a fast track. CW had Mike Fuly (sorry Mike always forget the spelling) back in action and Ander Monro orchestrating at #10. Also Adam Kleeberger was in the lineup. They seemed to have found the right chemistry as the Caps are a difficult team to breakdown, CW obviously found the key. With the result CW now are in 4th place with 28 points, the Ravens loss knocks them down to 5th. Caps remain in 3rd with 32. The way CW are playing as of late, I don’t think they’re going to relinquish that playoff spot, the question now becomes, who’s going to matchup in the playoffs. CW @ Burnaby or CW @ JBAA, Caps @ JBAA or Caps @ Burnaby. CW look good to win their remaining 3 on current form vs Vikes, Lomas and Ravens. Caps may be 1 out of 3 facing Ravens, Bays and Burnaby. It could be a CW @ Bays semi which would get Island fans excited and a Caps @ Burnaby semi which mainland fans would love. Stay tuned.

PREGAME
Another top game on the Island, as usual the first question is who are CW fielding this week. The 7s team are gone but their tight five of Buydens, Tiedemann, Ilnicki and Phelan might still be in play. These are two teams with a similar style, mostly a forwards oriented, control game. CW only managed 8 points in their last outing against Burnaby and average 19 points a game. Caps scored 23 points in their last match and average 22 points a game. So a +3 for Caps there, factor in home field and a +7 for CW and it’s looking close. The decider is the defensive stats, Caps win games on defence and allow only 13 points per game, CW allow 23. Prediction: Caps by 3.

UVic Vikes 29 @ Meraloma 5 – Connaught Park

Not a suprising result considering the Lomas are winless this season. The Vikes break their losing streak but remain in 6th place. Considering the form CW are showing now, it’s not looking hopeful for the students making the playoffs but they face CW next weekend and if they win that they’re back in the race, lose and they’re out. The Lomas look to rebuild for next year in Div 1.

PREGAME
Two teams in the doldrums, Vikes on an extended losing streak they hope to snap, and Lomas winless this season. The Vikes missing their U20 and 7s players but they should have enough firepower to overcome a team that has allowed opponents 36 points a game on average. Vikes score 25 points on average. Lomas will no doubt be hoping to claim their first W in front of the home crowd faithful. Prediction: Vikes by 10.

Vancouver Rowing Club 18 @ UBCOB Ravens 15 – Jericho Park

This dealt the Ravens chance of a postseason berth a blow, they face Caps, Vikes and CW so not an easy road but they control their own destiny. The Rowers face Bays, Burnaby and Vikes. Here is Steve Feenstra’s match report.

On a rainy, cold, miserable Saturday, the UBCOB Ravens and Vancouver Rowers put up two tight low scoring games that were both for the taking until the final whistle.

In the Div.1 game, the Ravens came out victorious with the score of 11-8.

The close, hard fought battle that saw momentum swing back and forth, was somewhat marred by five yellow cards and two reds. This definitely had an impact, with both teams having to scramble to cover for all the missing players.

The first half ended with the score knotted at 3 – 3, with a penalty conversion for both teams.

The second half had a the outside centre for the Rowers dot down a fine piece of running at the 48 minute mark to make the score 8-3 with the convert missed.
The Ravens came back hard at the 52 minute mark with their pack pushing in from close to level the score at 8-8 with the convert being missed as well.

A penalty against the Rowers with only a few minutes remaining appeared to have the Ravens in victory lane as they converted to go up 11-8.

It’s never that easy though and the Ravens had to sweat out a penalty kick for goal against them at the death which was missed by the Rowers.

Notable all game albeit in a losing cause was the fullback Nathan Tough for Rowers, who was energetic and industrious all game.

The Premier game, won narrowly by Rowers, had both teams come out with their packs trying to impose their respective wills on each other. In the first half the Rowers pack seemed to have a slight edge and had the Ravens on their back foot on several scrums. As the game wore on however, that would flip to the Ravens having the bigger push.

The first score came from the foot of Darren Harris as he converted a penalty to make it 3-0 Rowers.

A big effort by the Ravens ended up over the try line at the 36 minute mark but the ball carrier was held up by the Rowers. However it didn’t take the Ravens long to take advantage of the 5 metre scrum to have Tom McKeen punch one in and with the convert by Tom Luke make the score 7-3 Ravens at the half.

A concerted effort which had the Ravens pounding at the door to cross the try line for around five minutes was a great start to second half. The Rowers held fast and eventually kicked out of trouble. The weather started to get better and both teams started to open up and seemed to play with more confidence.

The Rowers scored the next try by blocking a kick at their own 22 and two soccer kicks later having Caleb Hansen pick the ball up and run it over. With the convert it was 10-7 Rowers.

Before the scoreboard changed for the Rowers score, the Ravens came charging back a minute later and Nick Waggett finished of a nice series of passes to dive over the line. No convert made the score 12-10 Ravens.

A penalty kick for goal by each team had the Ravens leading 15-13 and with a few minutes to go the Ravens were grinding it out on the ground. However the Rowers had the ball come out to them in one of the rucks and Denis Barnett ran in what would prove to be the winning score in the last minute., 18-15 Rowers.

What they said:

The coaching staff of the Ravens felt that they went away from their game plan used in the past few weeks, and a couple of kicks that may have been better placed were a big factor in a close game.

The Rowers coach was pleased with the improvement of his team as that is a goal each and every week. He also felt that the Rowers focussed more on their own game this week and didn’t think as much about the other team’s game plan or the weather conditions.

Sherry Turnbull called the game and let both teams play hard while not letting anything get out of hand.

PREGAME
The battle for fourth place and the final playoff berth looks interesting. CW and Ravens are the top prospects but Vikes and Rowers still have a shot. If Rowers defeat Ravens and CW and Vikes lose then Rowers are right there. It’s a long shot though. Only 3 weekends left in the regular season after this weekend so the picture should be clearer by Saturday evening. Ravens won the first contest rather easily on the road, 44-15, but Rowers have been surprising teams this year. If Rowers lose this one, they’re pretty well written off for post season play. If Ravens win they solidify their hold on fourth. Prediction: Ravens by 7.
