Men’s Premier
Capilano 29 v Meraloma 27 @ 14:30
Referee: Benjamin Lambrick AR1: Saro Turner AR2: Phil Webster
Venue: Klahanie Park
A big upset for the home team as they defeat the Lomas by +2. That puts Capilano at 3-3 and the Lomas at 3-4. Next week Caps visit the Ravens to wrap up the fall season, the Lomas have a bye and will regroup for their next match Feb 1st after the winter break.
PREGAME
#8 hosting #3. Capilano edged Burnaby in their last match, 15-12. The Lomas lost a close one to #1 Ravens last match, 10-5.
Caps missing Reid Davis, Melani Nanai both national team level players. Izzak Kelly returns however. Saba Shubitidze, the Georgian flanker, is also missing. Veteran Chris Robinson starts at flyhalf.
The Lomas are probably the 2nd ranked team in the league behind the Ravens, they defaulted a match so they’re lower in the standings but they only lost to the #1 Ravens by 5 points last week. Adding Ben Shaw to the starting roster at fullback and missing Doug Fraser in the centres are the only changes to the starting XV with some rotation from the reserves.
Lomas go in as favourites here. Prediction: Lomas by +7.

James Bay AA 8 v UBCOB Ravens 24 @ 14:30
Referee: Chris Assmus AR1: Juan Pablo Rey AR2: Chloe Hill-Huse
Venue: James Bay AA- MacDonald Park
The Ravens continue to roll and keep their undefeated record (6-0) with a +16 win on the road. The Bays drop to 1-5 in the standings. The Ravens host Capilano next week while the Bays begin their winter break, their next match Feb 1st against Burnaby.
PREGAME
#10 hosting #1. The Bays lost to CW in their last match, 25-17. The Ravens just edged the Lomas 10-5 in their last outing.
The Bays have a good roster with Josh Thiel returning at flyhalf and Phil Berna in the centres. It’s a similar roster that only lost by 8 to CW last weekend with the addition of Thiel to give them a boost.
The Ravens are undefeated and they’ve brought close to their top roster with Gaspard De Ligault and Aaron McLelland at halfbacks, and 5 Carsons in the roster. They’re missing Joshua Tweed and Grant Crowell from the forwards, and Jake Thiel and Jack Carson from the backs.
Ravens will go in as favourites. Prediction: Ravens by +8.

Pacific Pride 50 v University Of Victoria 10 @ 14:30
Referee: TBC
Venue: Shawnigan Lake
The Pride with a decisive +40 win over the Vikes. The Pride go to 3-2 in the table while the Vikes drop to 0-5. The Vikes host CW on a Friday night match on Nov 29th at Centennial Stadium. The Pride will visit UBC next weekend.
PREGAME
#7 hosting #9. The Pride lost to the Lomas in their last Premier match, 34-15. UVic returning in 5th place from the national University Championships, lost to Westshore 35-22 in their last Premier match.
The Pride rotating some players from the reserves but the match 23 looks similar to last match with the exception of the return from national duty of Rhys James, Jesse Kilgour and Sam Miller.
The Vikes coming off a disappointing 5th at the university nationals have to get back into the routine with some positive rugby. They’ve rotated the starting props from the reserves and have Merlin M’Cloud back. Otherwise the forwards look the same. In the backs the changes are Spencer Cotie and Lockhart MacGregor starting on the wings and Sion Griffiths getting the start at fullback.
The Pride with the return of 3 national team players should go in as favourites. Prediction: Pride by +6.

Westshore 29 v Castaway Wanderers 14 @ 14:30
Referee: Shanda Assmus AR1: Andrew Owen AR2: David Hale
Venue: Juan De Fuca
The match video is at https://www.facebook.com/WestshoreRFC/videos/570770725839797/ the Premier match is on the second half of the video.
Brian Ndirangu the blindside flanker scored first for Westshore 16 minutes into the match, Spencer Jones converted for a 7-0 lead. Ollie Nott replied for CW at 24 minutes with a run off a #8 pick from a 5 metre CW scrum. CW scored a penalty try from a scrum at the half time whistle, 14-7 CW at the half.
Nathan Groenewold, the tighthead prop, scored for Westshore to start the second half, 6 minutes in, when some loose play off a lineout found him matched up out wide against a couple of backs with a metre to the try line. The conversion was missed, 14-12 for CW.
Westshore scored again when CW didn’t go 10m on the kickoff, the resultant scrum at centre saw Spencer Jones go blindside and dish off to the wing, Johnstone Olindi, for the score, 17-14 for Westshore. Westshore added another try at 66 minutes with sustained pressure inside the CW 5 metres, Nelson Oyoo scored after multiple phases of attack, 24-14 Westshore. They added one more at the whistle with a two man overlap out wide, sub Braedan Bespalko scoring, final 29-14.
Westshore go 4-1-1 in the standings to maintain their #2 ranking. CW drop to 3-3. CW play UVic on a Friday night match under the lights next weekend while Westshore begin their winter break and face the Lomas on Feb 1st.
PREGAME
#2 hosting #4. Westshore had a bye last week but played an exhibition match against Seattle, they defeated UVic 35-22 in their last Premier match. CW defeated JBAA 25-17 in their last Premier match.
Westshore have a good roster this weekend, missing Thomas Isherwood with the 7s but they have Spencer Jones at #10, Gabe Casey in the centres plus 5 Kenyan speedsters in the roster.
CW are missing Gradyn Bowd this weekend and are playing #9 Zech Pilgrim at flyhalf. They have a strong forward pack with just John Humphries missing from last week.
It should be an entertaining match, we’ll say the home side are favourites here. Prediction: Westshore by +5.

Seattle Rugby 24 v Westshore 33 @ 14:00
Referee: Visiting Referee
Venue: Starfire Field
It was a lot closer than last time these teams met at Westshore but the visitors did come away with a +9 win to give them a 2-1 record. Seattle drop to 0-4. Westshore visit Burnaby next weekend. Seattle’s next match is Feb 8th as they host UBC 2.
PREGAME
#6 hosting #3. Seattle lost a close one on the road to CW 19-10, this is their first home game. Westshore lost big to Thunderbirds 2 last week on the road.
The Seattle forward pack looks consistent with hooker Taylor Tracy the only new player, interesting they’ve moved #13 Zyana Flores-Thomas to #8, perhaps to address the need for speed in the pack. In the backs Katie Shadler is introduced on the wing.
Westshore’s roster varies a lot week by week, this roster is stronger than the one they sent to UBC last week but not as strong as the team that defeated Seattle at home 71-15. This will be a completely different match. Westshore are missing 3 top backline players Asia Hogan-Rochester, Renee Gonzalez and Eden Kilgour, all national team level.
This should be a close match, Seattle’s first home game will give them a boost. Prediction: Westshore by +1.

Vancouver Thunderbirds 2 50 v Burnaby Lake 7 @ 12:45
Referee: Riley Robinson AR1: Simon Whyte AR2: Jeremy Duncan
Venue: UBC- Gerald McGavin Centre
The UBC 2 team, which is really the UBC 1 team lite, showed their strength with a resounding +43 win over Burnaby. UBC 2 are done until the spring when they visit Seattle on Feb 8th. Next weekend Westshore visit Burnaby to see the relative strength of the two teams vying for 2nd place.
PREGAME
#2 hosting #1. The Thunderbirds coming off a 58-0 win over Westshore, Burnaby had a bye week last week but their last match was a 46-27 win over CW.
Thunderbirds continue to play most of their 1st team forwards as the 2nd team. It’s going to be interesting when both teams play the same weekend, that won’t be until Feb 15th when Thunderbirds 1 meet Thunderbirds 2, and March 8th when the 2nd team travel to Seattle and the 1st team host Westshore. It looks like they’re slowly introducing the 2nd team into the reserves as 13 of the 15 starters were on the Gold medal UBC team that won the national University title.
Burnaby have a number of changes from their last match, Jailee Mercedes and Gabriel Hindley come into the forward pack. In the backs Ava Van Stanten comes into the roster at outside centre.
This will likely be a closer game than last week for the Thunderbirds, Burnaby look close to full strength. Prediction: Burnaby by +3.
