BC Rugby Wrapup for Weekend of September 9th 2023: Premier Preseason Results; Coastal Cup and Dunbar Keg Results
It was a beautiful sunny weekend for rugby, at least on the south Island where I took in some matches.
At UVic there was a triple header starting with the Dunbar Keg match, South Island Tide vs North Island Tsunami. That was won by North Island 36-33. Vancouver defeated Valley 61-0 in the other U20 match. Next weekend the Valley host the Tide at Langley and Vancouver host Tsunami at UBC.

Next up at UVic was the women’s CanWest competition, that match was won by UBC 29-12. UBC are ranked 3rd nationally, UVic 7th. The Top 10 are Laval, Queen’s, UBC, Guelph, Ottawa, Carleton, UVic, Western, UPEI, Alberta. The national championship will be held Nov 1-5 in Quebec City, hosted by Laval.
The final match of the triple header at UVic was the Coastal Cup contest, UVic v Pacific Pride. That was won 52-14 by the Pride who look the top team in that competition, defeating UBC and UVic on consecutive weekends. UBC won their contest against TWU 61-22. UBC have Izzak Kelly and Jacob Bossi back from NZ, so we’ll see if that makes a difference when they have their rematch against the Pride next weekend at UBC.
In the Premier pre-season there were some results posted, the Bays defeated CW 38-28, Burnaby defeated the Lomas 14-5 and the Ravens defeated Capilano 39-14. I noticed the Bays had Mason Flesch suiting up at blindside flanker, his younger brother Noah plays with the Pride. There may be a few MLR players taking part in the BC Premier fall season and then returning to their MLR teams in the new year.
I went over to watch the Westshore v Cowichan Div 1 match and that was won by Westshore 57-18. Other Island Div 1 results were Nanaimo over Port Alberni 36-27. On the mainland in Div 1/Div 2 preseason it was Kamloops 62-0 over Kelowna, Langley 22-7 over Scribes, Kats 60-0 over Capilano, Chilliwack 56-5 over Surrey and Burnaby 22-14 over Meraloma.
