There was a good crowd on hand to watch the Vancouver Island Crimson Tide Classics cruise to a 72-7 win over the visiting Calgary Maverick Classics at MacDonald Park. The event was a fundraiser for the Canadian Rugby Foundation fund in memory of Kevin “Lunk” Wirachowski. There are 56 photos posted on the BCRN facebook page.
Kevin ‘Lunk’ Wirachowski Charity Game: Crimson Tide Classics vs Calgary Maverick Classics on Saturday at 3pm at MacDonald Park
This Saturday, April 20th at 3:00 PM the Canadian Classics – Crimson Tide Edition – are hosting a 60 minute match against the Calgary Maverick Classics. This annual home and away series is in memory of Kevin ‘Lunk’ Wirachowski who passed away tragically in the fall of 2023.
Born in Port Alberni, Lunk was a legendary fixture in Canadian Rugby for over 40 years with 18 Canadian caps from his debut vs England at Wembley in 1992 to his last vs NZ Māori at York Stadium in 2003. He scored 3 tries, vs Uruguay, Argentina and Italy and also played for Moseley in England National One in 2002/03 (8 games, 2 tries). Domestically, he was a force for Velox/Westshore, UBCOB Ravens, and Port Alberni Black Sheep over his lengthy career.
Suiting up on Saturday at MacDonald Park at 3PM are many capped Internationals on both sides of the ball and the game should be a fast flowing, high-scoring affair.
Admission is by donation and all proceeds will go towards a Canadian Rugby Foundation bursary to be awarded annually in Kevin’s name to a graduating high school front row forward with an interest in the trades.
